The IEEE Board of Directors is the organization’s governing body. It oversees IEEE’s corporate governance and fiduciary responsibilities, with the IEEE President presiding. A 2026 IEEE Spectrum feature profiles four directors—Bala S. Prasanna, Stefano Bregni, Charles M. Jackson, and H. Alan Mantooth—but those profiles are not a complete current Board roster.
What does the IEEE Board of Directors do?
The Board governs IEEE and carries fiduciary responsibility for the corporation, according to IEEE’s governance overview. IEEE Spectrum describes the Board’s work as shaping the organization’s future direction, serving members and the engineering and technology community worldwide, and fulfilling IEEE’s mission. The IEEE President presides over the Board.
How is IEEE governance structured?
IEEE’s governance overview presents its written authority in this order: certificate of incorporation, Constitution, Bylaws, policies, and board-level operations manuals. The structure described there combines geographic representation, technical-society representation, and corporate officer roles.

Region and Division Directors
- Region Directors: The overview describes ten directors, each elected by voting members in one of IEEE’s geographic regions.
- Division Directors: It describes ten directors elected by voting members of societies grouped into divisions.
These counts describe the Region and Division Director positions in that overview; they are not a complete Board total. The overview also names officer seats, including the President, President-Elect, Past President, vice presidents who lead major boards, Secretary, and Treasurer. It does not establish a precise current Board size or enumerate the full current roster.

The Board and the IEEE Assembly
The Board’s role is governance. The IEEE Assembly has a distinct electoral role: the overview says it elects the President-Elect, and that Region and Division Directors also serve as Assembly delegates. These functions should not be conflated—the Assembly performs the stated election, while the Board governs IEEE.
Four directors featured by IEEE Spectrum
IEEE Spectrum’s 2026 feature introduces four Board members. Their representation and technical backgrounds illustrate the range of experience among those featured, but they are not a verified list of everyone currently serving on the Board.
Rank #2
| Director | Role identified in the feature | Background described by IEEE Spectrum |
|---|---|---|
| Bala S. Prasanna | Director, Region 1 (Northeastern U.S.) | Telecommunications, computer science, and digital transformation; more than 25 years of IEEE volunteer leadership. |
| Stefano Bregni | Director, Division III | Telecommunications networks professor at Politecnico di Milano; work on network synchronization, Internet traffic characterization, and related standards. |
| Charles M. Jackson | Director, Division IV | Microwave and millimeter-wave technologies, space applications, communications, radar, and Earth observation. |
| H. Alan Mantooth | Director, Division II | Power electronics, grid modernization, vehicle electrification, renewable energy, and cybersecurity. |
The role titles and career summaries above reflect IEEE Spectrum’s feature; they are not independent verification of each biography or of current terms.
Is this the full current IEEE Board roster?
No. The 2026 feature profiles four directors, not every current Board member. Board membership and officer roles can change, and the available governance overview does not enumerate a complete roster or terms. To identify everyone currently serving, consult IEEE’s current official Board listing or governing documents rather than treating the four feature subjects as the full Board.
