Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse puppeteer.launch() to start a browser and get a Puppeteer Browser object; call browser.process() on that object to retrieve its associated Node.js ChildProcess. If the browser was started elsewhere, connect with puppeteer.connect() instead. A key distinction: browser.close() shuts down the browser, while browser.disconnect() detaches Puppeteer and leaves the browser running.
Get the process handle when Puppeteer launches the browser
The Browser object is Puppeteer’s API handle for a browser instance. When Puppeteer launches that instance, its process() method returns the associated Node.js ChildProcess. You can use that handle when you need to inspect or manage the locally launched process through Node.js.
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const process = browser.process();
if (!process) {
throw new Error('No local browser process is available');
}
console.log('Browser PID:', process.pid);
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
console.log('Title:', await page.title());
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The launch and process() APIs are documented in the Puppeteer Browser API reference. The example assumes a Node.js project configured for ES modules and Puppeteer installed. The API reference describes the associated child-process handle; do not assume a locally owned handle is available for every browser connection established with connect().
Choose whether to launch, use another executable, or connect
The right entry point depends on who starts the browser and who is responsible for stopping it. Puppeteer documents launching a browser, choosing an executable, and connecting to an existing browser as distinct options.

| Option | Use it when | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
puppeteer.launch() with the bundled browser |
Your application should start and manage its own browser. | This is the default setup described in Puppeteer’s configuration guide. Puppeteer’s bundled browser is the compatibility baseline. |
puppeteer.launch({ executablePath }) |
You intentionally need a separately installed Chrome or Chromium executable. | Confirm the binary exists and is compatible. Puppeteer’s LaunchOptions reference says compatibility is only guaranteed with the bundled browser. |
puppeteer.connect() |
A browser is already running, such as in another service or container. | You need an available browser WebSocket endpoint, and must know who owns cleanup. Disconnecting Puppeteer does not stop that browser. |
Use a separately installed Chrome or Chromium
Set executablePath in the launch options when you deliberately want Puppeteer to use another browser binary:
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
executablePath: '/absolute/path/to/chrome'
});
Replace the example path with the actual executable path for your operating system or container. Check the current launch options and configuration guide for the Puppeteer version in your project. Selecting a binary that exists does not by itself guarantee compatibility.

Connect to an already-running browser
For a browser started outside the current Puppeteer process, connect with its WebSocket endpoint:
const browser = await puppeteer.connect({
browserWSEndpoint: 'ws://your-browser-host:port/devtools/browser/…'
});
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.goto('https://example.com');
} finally {
browser.disconnect();
}
Use the real endpoint supplied by the browser or service; the endpoint above is illustrative. Puppeteer’s browser management guide covers connecting by WebSocket endpoint. A connection gives your code a Puppeteer Browser handle, but it does not mean your Node.js process owns the browser’s operating-system process.

Close the browser or only disconnect?
Choose cleanup based on process ownership. browser.close() closes the browser and its associated pages. browser.disconnect() detaches Puppeteer while leaving the browser and pages running. The distinction applies to how Puppeteer manages the session, not merely to whether a JavaScript variable is discarded.
- After
puppeteer.launch(), useawait browser.close()when the application is finished and should shut down the browser it started. - After
puppeteer.connect(), usebrowser.disconnect()when the externally managed browser should remain available. - Do not use
browser.close()on a shared or externally managed browser unless you intend to close that browser and its associated pages.
Puppeteer documents these behaviors in its browser management guide and Browser API reference.

Configure the browser process at launch
Puppeteer’s launch options provide process-facing controls, including browser arguments, environment variables, signal handling, and the startup timeout. The current LaunchOptions reference gives a default startup timeout of 30 seconds; set it to 0 to disable that timeout. These settings affect browser startup and management, not whether a later connect() call creates a locally owned process.
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({
args: ['--some-browser-argument'],
env: process.env,
timeout: 30_000
});
The argument shown is illustrative; add only flags appropriate to your browser and environment. Review the current options reference rather than copying settings blindly, because launch configuration and browser compatibility depend on the Puppeteer version and runtime.

Troubleshoot launch and process access
The configured executable cannot be found or started
Check that executablePath points to an installed binary that the application user can execute. If you do not specifically need a separate installation, try Puppeteer’s bundled browser configuration and consult the configuration guide.
The browser starts but fails during initialization
A present executable may still fail because the environment lacks required operating-system packages or runtime configuration. Diagnose the actual operating system, container, and Puppeteer setup against the official troubleshooting guide; there is no single package fix that applies to every deployment.
Headless Chrome fails on the default Google Cloud Run Node.js runtime
Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide says the default Google Cloud Run Node.js runtime lacks system packages needed by Headless Chrome and advises supplying a Dockerfile with the missing dependencies. This is a Cloud Run-specific caveat, not a universal instruction for all Node.js hosts. Follow the current Puppeteer troubleshooting guidance for that environment.
browser.process() does not give the process you expected
First determine whether the browser was launched by this Puppeteer process or reached through puppeteer.connect(). The documented method returns the associated Node.js child process; the reviewed API contract does not establish that every externally connected browser exposes a locally owned process handle. Treat the remote browser’s service or operating environment as the process owner.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is a website screenshot rather than managing a browser process, ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF with one GET request. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP capture of Stripe:
