To use the U.S. American Express Platinum airline fee credit, first select one qualifying airline in your Amex account, then pay that airline directly with your enrolled Platinum Card for an eligible incidental fee. Amex will generally apply a statement credit automatically; the benefit is not a discount at airfare checkout. The current terms provide up to $200 per Card Account per calendar year, and eligible fees must be charged after you select the airline.

What is the Amex airline fee credit?

It is an annual statement-credit benefit for qualifying incidental charges from one airline you choose. It is not a general credit toward airfare, and it does not automatically apply to fees from every airline. The current American Express benefit terms state a maximum of up to $200 per Card Account per calendar year.

The credit is reimbursement-style: you pay for an eligible fee with the enrolled Platinum Card, then wait for a separate statement credit. The charge must be made by the airline you selected and recognized as an eligible incidental purchase in the transaction data. Amex says it relies on airlines to submit the information it needs to identify those purchases, so a charge in a category that may qualify is not a guarantee of a credit.

The benefit applies to eligible purchases made by the Basic Card Member and Additional Card Members on the same Card Account, but the account shares one annual maximum. Unused value does not roll over into the next calendar year.

Think of the $200 figure as a ceiling on credits for the account, not a cash balance you can withdraw or a coupon that reduces the fare at checkout. You must make an eligible purchase first, and the credited amount cannot exceed the account’s remaining annual maximum. If you have already received credits during the year, later eligible fees can use only the unused portion of that maximum.

How do I use my Amex airline fee credit?

Select your airline before paying for the incidental fee, use the enrolled Platinum Card, and allow time for the automatic credit to appear.

  1. Open your Amex account. Sign in online and go to the Benefits section, or call the number on the back of your Card.
  2. Select one qualifying airline. The current benefit page lists Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines as examples. Amex says the list can change, so check the choices displayed in your own account before making a purchase.
  3. Pay the selected airline directly. After your selection is in place, use the enrolled Platinum Card to pay for an eligible incidental fee. A separate charge for a bag, seat selection, or other eligible service is generally a clearer fit than a fee bundled into the airfare purchase.
  4. Keep the receipt and check your account. The credit is generally automatic; you do not normally submit a claim for each charge. Save the receipt and note the transaction date and amount in case the credit does not appear.
  5. Allow time for posting. Amex says credits are typically received within a few days but may take up to 6–8 weeks. An official Amex FAQ gives a typical 2–4-week period. Because the stated typical windows differ, allow up to eight weeks before escalating a charge that appears eligible.
  6. Contact Amex if it is still missing. If eight weeks have passed, call the number on the back of the Card and provide the transaction details. Keep paying your account on time while you wait; a pending or missing credit does not pause your payment obligation.

Before buying, make two quick checks: confirm the airline currently selected in Benefits, and confirm that the airline itself is charging the incidental fee. The airline shown as operating the flight is not always the same business that processes a fee, particularly when a partner airline or third party is involved. If the transaction is charged by a different company, the benefit may not recognize it even if the fee relates to your trip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When possible, make the incidental purchase as its own transaction rather than combining it with airfare or another purchase. This gives Amex a clearer transaction to evaluate and makes it easier to identify the fee if you need to follow up. Keep the receipt until the credit posts; it can help establish what you bought, when you bought it, who charged it, and how much you paid.

What charges may qualify?

Amex lists examples of incidental fees that may qualify when they are charged by your selected airline and correctly identified in the transaction data. Treat these as possibilities, not guaranteed credits.

Charge How to think about it
Checked-bag fees May qualify when charged by the selected airline.
Oversized or overweight baggage fees May qualify; the charge still needs to come from the selected airline and be recognized correctly.
Flight-change fees May qualify. The fee is distinct from buying a ticket or an upgrade.
Seat-selection or seat-reassignment fees May qualify; seat upgrades are excluded.
In-flight food and beverages May qualify when charged by the selected airline.
In-flight entertainment May qualify; wireless internet is excluded.
Phone-booking fees May qualify when the selected airline charges the fee.
Airline-club membership fees or airport-lounge day passes Amex lists these as possible eligible incidental fees. A lounge charge from another business or airline may not qualify.
Pet-kennel fees May qualify when charged by the selected airline.

For a practical choice, prioritize a fee you would otherwise pay—such as a checked-bag fee—rather than spending solely to use the credit. If a charge is optional, compare its value to the amount you would actually pay without the benefit. The credit is capped at the amount of eligible charges, up to the account’s remaining annual maximum.

For example, if you expect to pay a checked-bag fee to your selected airline anyway, using the benefit for that charge may offset a real travel expense. A lounge day pass can also be a reasonable use if you would otherwise buy it and the selected airline charges you directly. By contrast, purchasing an optional service only to use up the credit may not leave you better off. The benefit reimburses eligible fees; it does not make an unwanted purchase worthwhile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no guaranteed best category because the credit depends on your travel plans and on how the airline submits the transaction. The useful comparison is between a necessary or valued incidental fee and a discretionary one: consider what you would pay without the benefit, whether the selected airline charges it directly, and whether the charge is clearly separate from an excluded item. A separately billed bag or in-flight purchase is easier to explain than an ambiguous bundle or third-party transaction, although correct coding is still not assured.

What does not qualify?

Do not count on the credit for airfare or for purchases Amex explicitly excludes. The cited terms exclude:

  • Airline tickets and award tickets
  • Upgrades and fees associated with upgrades
  • Mileage-point purchases and mileage-point transfer fees
  • Gift cards
  • Duty-free purchases
  • Wireless internet

A fee charged by an airline other than the one selected is also outside the benefit, including certain charges from alliance partners. The relevant question is who charged the incidental fee—not simply which airline operates the flight or whose logo appears on the itinerary.

Amex also warns that paying through an electronic wallet, a third party, or certain mobile or wireless card readers can prevent the necessary transaction information from reaching Amex. If a fee is eligible, paying the selected airline directly with the enrolled Card is the less ambiguous route. Even then, the airline’s transaction coding affects whether Amex recognizes the purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters for common borderline cases. A ticket does not become an eligible incidental fee because it is bought from the selected airline; airfare itself is excluded. Similarly, paying for an upgrade or an upgrade-associated fee is not the same as paying to select or reassign a seat. An award flight remains an excluded award ticket, and buying miles or paying a miles-transfer fee is not an incidental-fee use. For in-flight purchases, entertainment may qualify, but wireless internet is specifically excluded.

Third-party checkout can create another avoidable uncertainty. A travel site or electronic wallet may transmit transaction details differently from a direct airline charge, and certain mobile or wireless card readers may not pass the identifiers Amex needs. The benefit terms do not promise that every transaction made through those channels will be recognized. If you want to reduce that risk, pay the airline directly with the enrolled Platinum Card and retain the receipt.

Can I use the credit for checked bags, seat selection, or a lounge pass?

Those charges may qualify, but only when the selected airline charges them and the transaction is identified as an eligible incidental fee. Amex lists checked-bag fees, some seat-selection fees, and airline-club membership fees or airport-lounge day passes as examples; upgrades and wireless internet are excluded.

For baggage, make sure the fee is charged separately by the airline rather than assuming that a ticket package or a third-party booking charge will be recognized. For seats, distinguish a fee to choose or reassign a seat from paying to upgrade to a higher cabin or upgraded seat. For lounge access, check who is charging the pass: a pass sold by a different company may not be treated as a fee from your selected airline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Overweight and oversized baggage fees are also among Amex’s examples of possible eligible charges. If you are deciding how to avoid such a fee, a luggage scale can help you check a bag’s weight before travel. The scale is a separate product purchase, however, and is not eligible for the airline fee credit. The credit may apply to a qualifying fee charged by the selected airline; it is not a credit for luggage accessories.

Can I change the airline I selected?

Generally, you can change your selection once each January. If you do not change it, the current selection remains in place. Check your account for the current selection and available choices before paying a fee, particularly near the start of the year.

The timing matters: Amex says incidental fees charged before you select an airline are not eligible. Selecting the airline after the transaction does not make that earlier charge eligible. Since the benefit resets by calendar year and unused value does not carry forward, plan around the calendar-year deadline—but leave time for a charge to post and be recognized.

Choose based on the airline from which you realistically expect to buy incidental services, not just the airline you fly most often. The selected airline has to be the one charging the fee. If your travel includes multiple carriers, a bag fee charged by an unselected partner airline may not qualify even if it is part of the same itinerary. The qualifying-airline list is subject to change, so verify the available choices in your account rather than relying on a past selection list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calendar-year timing also affects planning. The account’s unused credit does not roll into the next year, but you should not wait until the last moment and assume a transaction will be credited immediately: Amex allows as long as 6–8 weeks for the statement credit to appear. Use an eligible fee you already expect to incur, make sure the selection is in place first, and keep a record of the charge. The benefit is measured by the calendar year, not the Card’s anniversary.

Why has my Amex airline fee credit not posted?

A credit can be delayed or fail to appear if the airline, transaction type, timing, or payment path does not meet the benefit terms—or if the airline’s transaction data does not identify the charge correctly.

  • Check the airline selection. Confirm that the airline charging the fee is the one selected in your Amex account.
  • Check when you selected it. The fee must have been charged after the selection was made.
  • Check the charge itself. Airfare, upgrades, miles, gift cards, duty-free purchases, and wireless internet are excluded. A fee that seems similar to an eligible example may still be coded differently.
  • Check how you paid. A third party, digital wallet, or certain mobile card readers may not pass along the information Amex needs.
  • Allow the full posting window. Amex’s official materials describe credits as typically arriving within a few days or, in an FAQ, within 2–4 weeks, while allowing up to 6–8 weeks. Waiting up to eight weeks is the safer threshold before contacting Amex.
  • Call Amex after eight weeks if needed. Use the number on the back of the Card and have the receipt and transaction details ready. Continue making required payments on time.

If the charge clearly fits an eligible example but remains uncredited, explain the fee and payment method when you contact Amex. The airline’s merchant and service identifiers matter, so the category name on a receipt alone cannot guarantee recognition.

Amex’s current benefit terms say credits are typically received within a few days, but may take up to 6–8 weeks. An Amex FAQ describes a typical 2–4-week period. Those stated typical windows differ, so the practical approach is not to assume the credit is missing after only a few days or even a couple of weeks. Wait up to eight weeks for a potentially eligible charge, then contact Amex if it still has not appeared. Save the receipt and have the charge date, amount, airline, and description available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Even while you are waiting for a credit, pay the Card Account according to its normal due date. A missing or delayed statement credit does not pause the cardholder’s responsibility to pay on time. If a credit posts after you have already paid the original purchase balance, it remains a statement credit on the account; it is not a reason to ignore the original bill’s due date.

How can you make the credit easier to use?

Choose an airline you expect to pay incidental fees to during the calendar year, then verify that it remains selected before charging a fee. Consider the fee you would genuinely incur—such as a bag charge, seat-selection fee, or lounge day pass—rather than treating the $200 maximum as a target to spend.

Keep the transaction straightforward: book or buy the incidental directly from the selected airline, use the enrolled Platinum Card, and save the receipt. Avoid relying on a bundled airfare charge or third-party checkout when you can pay the airline separately. These steps reduce ambiguity, though they cannot override Amex’s reliance on the airline’s transaction coding.

If you are concerned about overweight-bag fees, checking a bag’s weight before travel may help you avoid one. A luggage scale is a separate purchase and is not eligible for this Amex credit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A simple planning checklist can help you use the benefit without turning it into a spending goal:

  • At the start of the year: review the selected airline in your Benefits section, and use the January opportunity to change it if your expected travel needs have changed.
  • Before an incidental purchase: verify that the airline charging the fee is selected, that the fee is a potentially eligible incidental charge, and that it will be paid with the enrolled Platinum Card.
  • At checkout: prefer a direct, separate transaction with the airline over a third-party or bundled payment where practical.
  • After the charge: save the receipt, track the date and amount, and allow the full posting window before contacting Amex.
  • Before year-end: remember that unused value does not roll over, but do not buy something you do not need solely to use the remaining amount.

This approach balances practical value with recognition risk. A necessary bag fee charged directly by the selected airline may be a more useful target than a discretionary purchase; a clearly separate charge may be easier to identify than a bundled one; and an early-enough purchase leaves time for the credit to post. None of those choices guarantees reimbursement, because the transaction still has to be correctly identified by the airline and recognized under the benefit terms.

How we interpret eligibility

This guide follows American Express’s current U.S. Platinum benefit terms and its cited examples of incidental fees. Because the list of qualifying airlines can change, and because recognition depends partly on information supplied by the airline, confirm the choices and terms in your Amex account before spending. Examples such as baggage or lounge fees are described as charges that may qualify, not guaranteed reimbursements.

American Express’s current 2026 benefit terms describe the annual maximum as up to $200 in statement credits per Card Account per calendar year and say Amex relies on airlines to submit the correct information on airline transactions. The practical consequence is that both the purchase category and the way the airline processes the payment matter. An eligible-sounding receipt is useful when asking about a charge, but it does not replace the transaction data Amex receives.

Will Amex reimburse an airline fee if I already paid my bill?

The benefit is a statement credit, so it can post after the original purchase has already been paid. Keep the receipt and continue meeting payment due dates; the credit does not change the bill’s original due date.

Can two Platinum Card Members use separate $200 airline credits on one account?

Eligible charges from the Basic Card Member and Additional Card Members can count, but they share the same Card Account maximum. The benefit is not a separate $200 allowance for each cardholder on that account.

How do I use my Amex airline fee credit?

Select one qualifying airline in the Benefits section of your Amex account, or by calling the number on your Card. After the selection is made, pay that airline directly with the enrolled Platinum Card for a potentially eligible incidental fee. Allow up to eight weeks for the automatic statement credit to post.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What counts for the Amex airline credit?

Potentially eligible examples include checked, oversized, or overweight baggage fees; flight-change fees; some seat-selection fees; in-flight food, beverages, and entertainment other than wireless internet; phone-booking fees; airline-club membership fees or lounge day passes; and pet-kennel fees. The airline must be the one you selected, and transaction coding affects recognition.

Can I use the Amex airline credit for checked bags?

A checked-bag fee may qualify when it is charged by your selected airline to the enrolled Platinum Card and correctly identified as an incidental fee. It is not guaranteed, so keep the receipt and check your account.

Does the Amex airline credit cover seat selection?

Some seat-selection or seat-reassignment fees may qualify when charged by the selected airline. Seat upgrades and fees associated with upgrades are excluded.

Can I use the Amex airline credit for a lounge pass?

Amex lists airline-club membership fees and airport-lounge day passes as possible eligible incidental fees. The selected airline must charge the fee; a pass charged by another business may not qualify.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I change my selected airline?

Generally, you can change the selection once each January. If you do not change it, the current selection remains. Check your Amex account for the selection and available airlines before making a fee purchase.

Why has my Amex airline fee credit not posted?

The charge may be delayed, excluded, charged by an airline other than the one selected, made before you selected that airline, or processed in a way that did not pass the needed transaction data to Amex. Credits can take up to 6–8 weeks. If an apparently eligible charge is still missing after eight weeks, contact Amex using the number on your Card.

The Bottom Line

To use the Amex airline fee credit, select one qualifying airline before the transaction, pay that airline directly with your enrolled Platinum Card for a potentially eligible incidental fee, and allow up to eight weeks for the statement credit. The maximum is $200 per Card Account per calendar year, unused value does not roll over, and airfare, upgrades, miles, gift cards, duty-free purchases, and wireless internet are excluded. Because correct airline transaction coding matters, keep the receipt and do not treat any example as a guaranteed credit.
