To identify its Windows worker-process ID (PID), match that GUID to a running vmwp.exe process on the Hyper-V host and verify the match before taking action. These are separate values: Get-VM returns the VM’s GUID, not necessarily its Windows PID.
Get the Hyper-V VM GUID
On the Hyper-V host, open PowerShell with suitable administrative rights and run:

Get-VM -Name 'VMName' | Select-Object Name, Id
Replace VMName with the VM’s name. The Id value is its GUID. Check the returned name to ensure you selected the intended VM. Microsoft documents Get-VM as retrieving virtual machines from one or more Hyper-V hosts; it can also query a VM by GUID with -Id.
Query a remote Hyper-V host
Get-VM supports remote host selection through -ComputerName or -CimSession. For example:
#1 Best Overall
- Two-phase power solution with up to 14 watts output supports the latest nvme drives
- The large heat sink and active fan reduce m.2 ssd temperatures for unregulated transfer speeds and increased reliability
- Adapted server type Pcb supports up to four pcie 4.0 / 3.0 m.2 units, with bandwidth up to 256 gbps for smooth data transfers
- Compatible with AMD TRX40/X570 pcie 4.0 for nvme raid and supports the raid-on-cpu functions of the intel platform.
- Also supports other suppliers' motherboards via PCie bifurcation in bios settings
Get-VM -ComputerName 'HyperVHost' -Name 'VMName' | Select-Object Name, Id
Use the host where the VM is registered, and ensure your account and remoting configuration permit the query.
List running virtual machines
If you need to enumerate running compute systems rather than retrieve a registered VM by name, Microsoft documents Get-ComputeProcess. Run it from an elevated PowerShell session:
Get-ComputeProcess -Type VirtualMachine
This cmdlet returns running compute systems from Host Compute Service, including virtual machines and containers. It supports filters such as compute-system ID or name. See Microsoft’s Get-ComputeProcess reference. The documented output does not establish a Windows PID field or a direct GUID-to-PID lookup.
Associate a VM GUID with its vmwp.exe PID
Hyper-V worker processes appear as vmwp.exe. A community troubleshooting answer describes searching the Windows process list for a worker whose command line contains the VM GUID, then reading that process’s ProcessId. The approach is useful as a matching strategy, but the posted filter has apparent formatting or transcription defects; do not rely on it as a guaranteed, copy-and-run command. The answer is available in this Microsoft Q&A thread.
- Retrieve the GUID with
Get-VMas shown above. - On the Hyper-V host, inspect running
vmwp.exeprocesses and their command lines using a method appropriate to your Windows version. - Match the GUID in the command line, then read the corresponding process’s PID.
- Confirm that exactly one process matches the GUID before treating its PID as the VM’s worker process.
Do not infer a PID from the VM name alone. Microsoft’s GetVmWorkerProcess API accepts a virtual-machine ID and returns a worker-process interface, but its documentation does not say that it returns a numeric Windows PID. Verify any PID lookup method against the target host and Windows/Hyper-V version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use the PID as a routine shutdown method
For a normal shutdown, use Hyper-V’s VM management controls or shut down the guest operating system. Terminating vmwp.exe is disruptive troubleshooting, not a substitute for a guest shutdown. The cited Q&A discusses forced termination only in the context of an unresponsive VM. Before any remediation, verify the GUID-to-process match and understand the potential service impact.
