GeoMapApp lets you explore curated geoscience datasets on a map, add your own grids, tables, images, or shapefiles, and inspect how the data fit together. It is free desktop software maintained by the Marine Geoscience Data System (MGDS) at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. The official site lists version 3.7.7, released in March 2026; check its download page for the current version and setup options.
What is GeoMapApp used for?
GeoMapApp is a map-based application for browsing, visualizing, and analyzing global and regional Earth science data. Its curated material covers fields including geophysics, geology, geochemistry, physical oceanography, and climatology. Users can start with a global elevation map from the Global Multi-Resolution Topography (GMRT) synthesis, then overlay other data to explore patterns and relationships.
The application is used in research and education, from high school through graduate study. It can help prepare research views, presentations, and publication figures. The official GeoMapApp homepage describes its data and capabilities.
What can you map and analyze?
Browse data and choose a projection
GeoMapApp provides curated global and regional datasets, with specialized portals that include seismic reflection profiles and geodetic velocity vectors. Available map projections include Mercator, North polar, and South polar. A map can combine multiple layers, with controls for their order and transparency so you can compare data located in the same area.

Import your own files
You can bring local grids, tabular data, images, and shapefiles into the map workspace. The available controls depend on the data type: for example, imported grids can be displayed with different palettes, shaded relief, or contours; tables can be edited and plotted; and map symbols can be adjusted. The official site and tutorials provide guidance for working with these data.
Create profiles, contours, and 3-D views
For gridded data, GeoMapApp supports profile extraction, contouring, and 3-D perspective views. Digitizing tools are also available. These functions can help you examine how a value changes across a route, trace features, or view a surface from an oblique perspective.

How do you get started?
- Check the official download page. The site lists downloads for Windows, Macintosh, and Unix/Linux, as well as a browser-based launch option. The official guide describes GeoMapApp as free Java software for Windows, Mac, Linux, and UNIX. Because Java and browser-launch requirements can vary by system and change over time, confirm the current instructions at the homepage and the tutorials page before choosing a setup route.
- Open a base map and add data. Start with the GMRT elevation map, then select a curated dataset or import a local file. Use the tutorials for instructions on gridded and tabular data, web services, analysis, digitizing, and specialized portals.
- Set up the view for comparison. Choose a projection, arrange overlay order, and adjust transparency or symbols so the layers you need remain visible.
- Save or export when ready. Save a session to preserve the view, or export an image in a supported format (see below).
Can you save and share a GeoMapApp session?
Yes. According to the official FAQ, a saved session can preserve the map area, loaded data layers and portals, symbol styling, layer transparency, and other display settings. Importing the session file restores that view, making it useful for sharing a configured map or returning to a teaching or figure-preparation setup.
What file formats can GeoMapApp export?
The FAQ lists JPEG, PNG, KMZ, and GeoTIFF image exports at screen resolution. It describes vector PDF and EPS export as being on the development list, so those formats should not be assumed to be available as current export options. If you need publication output at a particular resolution or in a vector format, check the FAQ and verify that the available export meets your requirements.
