GEO—generative engine optimization—is a label for improving visibility in AI-generated search answers, not proof that SEO no longer matters. For Google Search, Google says optimizing for its generative AI features is still SEO. What has changed is that visibility can also mean appearing in a generated answer or its citations, and different AI search products may choose sources differently. Two useful checks are available in Google Search Console: confirm a representative page is technically eligible, then review Google’s Generative AI performance report.
GEO vs. SEO: what the terms mean
SEO (search engine optimization) covers work to help a site be discovered, understood, and surfaced in search. GEO (generative engine optimization), sometimes grouped with AEO (answer engine optimization), describes efforts aimed at visibility in AI-generated answers. These labels can be useful when discussing a particular outcome, but they do not establish a separate set of universal ranking rules.
Google Search Central puts its own position plainly: “From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” That statement applies to Google Search, not automatically to every AI search service. Google Search Central’s guide to generative AI features is the relevant platform-specific reference.
What changed: search visibility can include generated answers
Some search products now synthesize responses and cite sources instead of presenting only a ranked list of links. As a result, a site may care about both conventional search visibility and whether its pages or organization appear in a generated answer and its citations.

A September 2025 preprint comparing generative AI search products with Google reported differences in source selection, domain diversity, freshness, cross-language stability, and sensitivity to query phrasing. The authors also reported a tendency toward third-party earned sources in the AI systems and experiments they studied. These are findings about that study’s sample and methods—not dependable behavior across all products or a guaranteed optimization recipe. The preprint should be read with that scope in mind.
Measurement is also product-specific. Google points site owners to the Generative AI performance report in Search Console for its own generative AI features. That report is not a comprehensive score for visibility in every AI answer.

What did not change for Google Search
Google says its AI search features continue to rely on the way Google Search discovers and processes pages. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet; the site must also be included in generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible for display. Eligibility is not a guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or serve a page.
Google’s guidance continues to emphasize crawlable pages, clear technical structure, useful and distinctive people-first content, and a good page experience. It recommends work that adds a distinctive point of view rather than merely repeating common knowledge. Its generative features may also surface images and video when relevant. These are recommendations, not promises of a ranking or citation.

Two checks to run today in Google Search Console
- Check technical eligibility for a representative page. In Search Console, inspect whether the page is accessible and indexed, and use the available technical diagnostics to investigate crawl or indexing problems. Google’s AI feature eligibility depends on Search eligibility and crawlability; passing these checks still does not guarantee the page will be shown.
- Review the Generative AI performance report. Use the report to see how your content performs in Google’s generative AI features. Treat it as Google-specific reporting, not an all-platform GEO visibility score.
GEO tactics Google says you do not need
For Google Search, its guidance says site owners do not need to:
- Create an
llms.txtfile or add special AI markup. - Rewrite pages specifically for AI systems or force content into tiny chunks.
- Add special schema.org markup for generative AI search. Structured data may still support eligibility for rich results as part of a broader SEO strategy, but it is not a requirement for generative AI search.
- Manufacture inauthentic mentions or publish pages for every query variation to manipulate results. Google warns that scaled content abuse policies apply.
Google’s documentation update log records that it added an llms.txt clarification in response to community questions. That clarification concerns Google Search; it does not establish what every other AI product may require. Google Search documentation updates lists its documentation changes.
How to compare GEO and SEO without treating them as opposites
| Question | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Platform coverage | Search visibility, such as Google Search results. | Visibility in generative AI search products; rules can differ by service. |
| Visibility outcome | Conventional search appearance and performance. | Presence in generated responses and citations, alongside any conventional search visibility. |
| Technical prerequisites | For Google, pages must be crawlable and meet Search eligibility requirements. | For Google’s generative features, those Search foundations still matter; other systems may have different access conditions. |
| Measurement | Use the relevant search platform’s reporting for conventional search performance. | Google’s Search Console report covers Google generative features; no common cross-platform measurement standard is established by the sources here. |
The practical distinction is the outcome being watched, not a proven replacement for foundational SEO. Keep any advice about Google scoped to Google, and evaluate other services on their own behavior and available reporting.
