Neither is a universal replacement for the other. The practical choice depends on how much control and editability you need, how you feel about training data, and what rights and provenance questions matter for the finished work.
What is the difference between generative AI and traditional digital art tools?
With a traditional digital art application, you create or change an image directly: draw a line, paint a layer, adjust a mask, or composite elements. Generative AI instead uses a model to produce or alter visual material based on text prompts, reference images, or other inputs. The creator may then select, revise, or combine the results.
The distinction is about the mode of control, not a strict divide between products. Some creative applications combine direct editing with generative features, so a project can use both methods. You can also use an AI-generated image as a starting point and continue editing it manually.
Which workflow fits your project?

Choose based on the work, not on a blanket claim that one method is faster or better. If the task calls for exploring concepts, generative features may help you produce options to assess. If it depends on exact placement, a distinctive hand-made treatment, or repeated local revisions, direct editing may be the more predictable route. For a mixed workflow, decide which parts you want a model to propose and which you want to create or refine yourself.

What should you know about AI training data and your own work?
Training-data practices vary by provider, so inspect the specific service’s policies rather than assuming all models work alike. Adobe says Firefly is trained on licensed content, including Adobe Stock, and public-domain content; it says it compensates Stock contributors whose work is used for training. Adobe also says it does not mine the web for Firefly training and has never trained Firefly on customer content. If a provider offers controls over the use of your work, check both their scope and practical consequences. Adobe’s help page, last updated September 3, 2025, describes a preference embedded in Content Credentials that asks supported models not to train on or use the content. Adobe names Firefly and Spawning as current supporters. It says setting the preference requires a verified name or connected social account; it can also prevent Adobe Stock uploads and block use of the work in Firefly reference features. Can you copyright AI-assisted art?
There is no reliable one-word answer based only on whether AI appeared in the workflow. The U.S. Copyright Office lists copyrightability of outputs created using generative AI as the subject of Part 2 of its study, published January 29, 2025. The available status information does not establish a single outcome for every work or a rule that prompting alone is sufficient. For a project where authorship or rights may matter, keep records of your own contribution: drafts, sketches, prompts and revisions, source materials, and the edits you made. Documentation does not itself guarantee copyright protection, but it can help you explain how the final work was created. Does commercial-use language guarantee that an image is safe to use?
No provider’s marketing language should be treated as a universal legal guarantee. Adobe says Firefly includes safeguards intended to prevent infringing output and that it provides intellectual-property indemnification for enterprise customers. That statement is specific to Adobe and its enterprise offering; it does not establish that every output is non-infringing or that consumer users receive the same protection. Questions about training inputs are also distinct from whether a particular output can be copyrighted or whether its use infringes someone else’s rights. The Copyright Office’s May 9, 2025 Part 3 is explicitly a pre-publication report, with a final version still forthcoming according to the Office’s status page. Its analysis discusses potential public benefits and harms, including possible substitution for training works and dilution of markets for similar works; it also notes that licensing can affect fair-use analysis. How can you tell whether an image was made with AI?
Some files carry provenance information, but no single signal proves how an image was made. Adobe says certain Firefly exports include Content Credentials indicating AI use. Depending on the file and workflow, credentials can include details such as creation date, tools, and edits. They are metadata, not proof of authorship, and downstream platforms may not preserve them. An image without visible credentials therefore cannot be assumed to be non-AI, and a credential should be read as information about the file rather than a complete account of its history. How to make a practical choice
- Start with the deliverable. For concept exploration and variations, test whether generative features help. For precise, localized control, plan for direct editing.
- Decide what you will accept from a model. You may use generated material for rough ideation but redraw or replace parts before delivery, or avoid generative features entirely.
- Check the provider’s current policies. Look for training sources, use of customer content, available opt-outs, commercial terms, and any limits tied to account type.
- Preserve the project trail. Keep editable files and records of your own creative choices, especially when authorship or licensing may later be questioned.
- Review the exported file. Check whether provenance metadata is present and consider the receiving platform’s handling of it; do not rely on metadata as the only disclosure or rights check.
