In the Game Developers Conference’s 2026 survey, 36% of respondents said they used generative-AI tools as part of their job. Research and brainstorming were the most frequently reported use; asset generation and player-facing features were less common. These are reports of use and opinion—not proof that AI makes games better, cuts budgets, or speeds up releases.
How are game developers using generative AI?
The GDC’s 2026 survey gives a task-by-task picture. Among respondents who said they used generative AI, the reported uses leaned toward research, routine work, and development support. Respondents could select more than one use, so the percentages do not add up to 100%.
| Reported use | Share of GDC 2026 generative-AI users |
|---|---|
| Research or brainstorming | 81% |
| Writing emails and other daily tasks | 47% |
| Code assistance | 47% |
| Prototyping | 35% |
| Asset generation | 19% |
| Procedural generation | 10% |
| Player-facing features | 5% |
Those figures describe what respondents said they did, not the quality or measurable impact of the work. For example, code assistance might help someone explore an approach, but the survey does not establish that it reduces development time or defects.
The GDC’s 2025 survey captured a broader set of applications developers saw as possible, including coding help, concept art, 3D-model generation, and automating repetitive tasks. At the same time, “none” was the most frequent response to the question about applications. That contrast matters: interest in possible uses coexists with skepticism about whether they belong in a particular workflow.

What are the benefits of generative AI in game development?
The clearest potential benefit is assistance with bounded tasks that a developer can review: gathering or organizing ideas, helping with routine writing, supporting coding work, or producing a prototype for evaluation. Generative AI may also be considered for visual or other production assets, but the GDC survey found those uses less frequently reported than research, daily tasks, and code assistance.
These are plausible workflow applications, not demonstrated gains. The GDC surveys record respondents’ use and views; they are not controlled comparisons of teams using and not using AI. They do not show that these tools necessarily increase productivity, lower costs, improve quality, or help a studio ship sooner.
A separate 2025 study by Google Cloud and The Harris Poll described developers’ views of AI’s influence in broadly positive terms, while also identifying hesitation around data and ownership rights. The study surveyed 615 developers in the United States, South Korea, Norway, Finland, and Sweden in late June and early July 2025. Its sponsor-led framing and defined sample should be kept distinct from the GDC survey results; neither establishes a universal industry experience.

What are the risks of using AI in game development?
Data, intellectual property, and ownership
GDC respondents raised concerns about intellectual-property theft and data sourcing. Before a team sends material to an AI service, it needs to understand what inputs are permitted, how the provider handles them, whether they may be retained or used for training, and what rights apply to generated outputs. The studies cited here identify these as concerns; they do not certify the terms of any particular product.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office discusses broader risks in generative-AI training, development, and deployment, rather than game-specific incidents. Its assessment describes challenges in collecting and developing data, the role of filtering and curation in reducing harmful material, and the possibility that foundation models trained on scraped public sources may be vulnerable to data poisoning. This is general technical context, not evidence that a particular studio or game tool has suffered such a failure.
Output quality, bias, and review burden
GDC respondents also cited generated-content quality and potential bias. A team still needs qualified people to check whether output meets the project’s technical, visual, narrative, and accessibility standards. An output that looks plausible can still be inaccurate, inconsistent with a game’s world, or unsuitable for production. The need for review can change the economics of a workflow; the available surveys do not quantify that trade-off.

Energy use, regulation, and reputational risk
Energy consumption and regulatory issues appeared among concerns in the GDC’s 2025 survey; energy use also appeared in the 2026 report’s discussion of open responses. These concerns are not quantified outcomes in the survey material. A studio should assess the actual tool and workload rather than assume either a specific environmental cost or a saving.
Jobs and creative control
In its 2026 report, GDC highlighted respondents’ concerns that AI could replace jobs, including creative roles. Some respondents supported narrower, non-creative uses such as code assistance or prototyping, while others opposed AI use altogether. The survey captures concern and disagreement; it does not measure jobs lost or establish a net employment effect.

GDC’s annual survey series shows a shift in reported sentiment. The share of respondents who said generative AI was having a negative impact on the industry was 18% in 2024, 30% in 2025, and 52% in 2026. In the 2026 survey, 7% said its impact was positive. These are opinions reported in surveys, not an independent measurement of AI’s net effect on the industry.

In GDC’s 2026 survey, 36% of respondents said they used generative-AI tools as part of their job. The report also found a difference by organization type: 30% at game studios reported use, compared with 58% at publishing companies, support teams, and marketing/PR firms. These are survey-specific shares, not a census of all game-industry workers.
Two other findings answer different questions. In 2026, 52% said generative-AI tools were used at their company, while 78% said they worked at a company with some form of internal AI-use policy. The 2025 GDC report found that 64% worked at companies with some policy. A workplace policy does not, by itself, reveal what tools or tasks an employer permits.

GDC says its 2026 survey included over 2,300 game-industry professionals and had a stated margin of error of ±3 percentage points. The sample and survey design still limit what can be inferred: the results should not be treated as representative proof of how every role or studio uses AI.
How should a game team evaluate an AI workflow?
A useful decision is not simply whether to use AI. It is whether a particular tool is appropriate for a particular task under the team’s quality, legal, and production requirements. Before adopting a workflow, assess:
- Task fit: Is the tool being considered for research, code assistance, prototyping, asset creation, or a player-facing feature?
- Human review: Who checks the output before it enters source code, production assets, or a shipped game, and what standards must it pass?
- Data and rights: What information may be submitted, how does the provider describe retention and training, and what rights attach to the output?
- Quality and bias: Can the team detect errors or bias and judge the result against its visual, narrative, technical, and accessibility requirements?
- Policy and disclosure: Does the employer allow the proposed use, and does it raise any platform or player-facing disclosure obligation? Requirements vary; the surveys discussed here do not establish current platform rules.
- Cost, energy, and workforce effects: What do these look like for the actual workflow? The cited surveys identify them as concerns but do not quantify the impact for a specific team.
This evaluation keeps a low-risk internal experiment distinct from putting generated material into a released game. It also makes clear who is accountable for checking output, rather than treating a tool’s availability as approval to use it.
Will AI replace game developers?
The available evidence does not establish that generative AI will replace game developers. GDC respondents raised job replacement as a concern, but the surveys do not measure how many roles will disappear, which tasks will change, or what the long-term employment effect will be. The reported mix of use—much more research and brainstorming than player-facing features—describes current survey responses, not a forecast.

The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: generative AI is entering some workflows, while use and acceptance vary by task, organization, and respondent. Whether a tool is useful depends on what it is asked to do, how its data and outputs are handled, and whether people can review the result to the standard a game requires.
