This comparison is for phone-based Android Auto, which projects compatible phone apps and services to a vehicle. Cars with Google built-in run Google apps and services natively and have separate setup and privacy controls.
What changes when you use Gemini instead of Google Assistant?
Google documents substantial overlap in what Gemini and Assistant can do through Android Auto. The main distinction is how you can ask: Assistant is commonly used for direct commands, while Gemini is designed to understand more natural, detailed requests and follow-up questions. Gemini Live is also available as a conversational option, but that does not establish that it is safer or more reliable for driving.

What can Gemini do in Android Auto?
Google documents Gemini for calls, texts, finding places and starting navigation, controlling music, and conversational follow-ups. Android Auto help also describes navigation features such as voice-guided directions, estimated arrival times, live traffic, and lane guidance through Google Maps or a compatible navigation app.
You can start a voice interaction with “Hey Google,” the microphone button on the car screen, or a supported steering-wheel voice button. “Hey Google” depends on Voice Match and having the relevant setting enabled. For messages, Gemini can help compose a text; you can refine it or cancel before it is sent. The exact apps and functions available depend on compatibility and setup.

Will Gemini work with your phone and car?
For phone-based Android Auto, Google lists these requirements for Gemini:
- A phone running Android 11 or newer.
- At least 2 GB of RAM.
- Gemini selected as the phone’s digital assistant.
- A vehicle or head unit that supports Android Auto.
Gemini and Android Auto are not available in every language or region. Google’s Android Auto help describes Gemini as understanding the same commands as Assistant while allowing natural speech, and says Google will share more details as it works on the transition from Assistant to Gemini during 2026. That is a dated transition statement, not a guarantee that every user has the same interface or can freely switch between assistants.

Google built-in is different: the vehicle runs Google apps and services itself rather than projecting them from your phone. Google documents an optional Gemini upgrade and a way to switch back to Assistant in vehicle settings for eligible vehicles. Availability and settings can vary by manufacturer, language, region, and data plan; do not assume the built-in switching steps apply to phone-based Android Auto.
Is Gemini more reliable than Google Assistant in the car?
The available evidence does not support declaring one assistant more reliable overall. Google’s direct caution about Gemini matters most for driving: it says Gemini in Android Auto is new and evolving, can hallucinate or present inaccurate information as fact, and should not be relied on for critical information or safety-related matters while operating a vehicle. For driving decisions, follow road signs, the navigation display, and your judgment—not a conversational answer.

Reported call problems illustrate why reliability can depend on the particular device and software version, but they do not establish an overall failure rate:
- On October 1, 2026, Android Central reported user accounts of Android Auto calls failing when certain foldable phones were closed after Gemini became active; Motorola and Google were reportedly investigating. Android Central’s report
- On June 16, 2026, TechRadar reported that Google had acknowledged a calling issue affecting some Android Auto and mobile users and said an app update fix was available. TechRadar’s report
Neither report measures how often calls fail across users or compares Gemini and Assistant under controlled conditions. If calls fail, check for updates to the phone, Android Auto, and Gemini apps, then investigate the specific phone-and-vehicle combination. The reports are dated incident coverage, not evidence that every Gemini user has a calling problem.

Is Gemini in Android Auto private?
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, updated September 24, 2026, explicitly includes Gemini in Android Auto. Google says information users provide can include spoken or typed prompts and tasks. Its documented Gemini Apps Activity controls let you review and delete activity, change auto-delete, and control whether activity is used to improve Google AI. These are Google’s stated policy terms as of that update; policies and controls can change.
Activity history and retention
Google documents an 18-month default auto-delete period for Gemini Apps Activity, with options for 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite retention. Google also says chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data may be retained for up to three years, even after activity is deleted. Deleting activity therefore does not necessarily remove every related copy immediately.
Location and other Google settings
A location setting is not a complete switch for every location flow. Google says Gemini may receive precise location from another Google service, such as Android Auto, to fulfill a request even if Gemini’s precise-location setting is off. Changing Gemini Apps settings also does not change other Google settings; other services may continue to save location or other data when you use them.
If your car has Google built-in
Google documents separate vehicle-level controls for app permissions, including location and microphone, and vehicle location settings. The controls vary by manufacturer, and restricting permissions may limit app functionality. These built-in controls are not a substitute for the Gemini Apps privacy controls relevant to phone-based Android Auto.

- Check compatibility before troubleshooting by confirming your phone meets Google’s Android and RAM requirements, Gemini is selected as the digital assistant, and your vehicle supports Android Auto.
- Review privacy controls based on your setup: Gemini Apps Activity applies to Gemini use, while Google built-in vehicles have additional car-level permission controls.
There is no published comparative statistic in the cited material for Gemini-versus-Assistant task success, call completion, response speed, satisfaction, or error rates. Your experience may depend on phone, vehicle, language, region, app compatibility, and current software, so the evidence supports a practical choice based on conversation style and privacy preferences—not a blanket reliability verdict.
