Gemini on Mac is a standalone Google desktop app; Apple Intelligence is a set of features built into macOS on supported Macs. Gemini offers a separate assistant window, screen and window context, and connections to Google services. Apple emphasizes system-level tools, on-device processing, and personal context across apps, with Private Cloud Compute for some requests. Their privacy approaches are different, and neither is a universal winner: the better fit depends on the data and apps you want an assistant to use.
Can you use Gemini on a Mac, and what does Apple Intelligence require?
Yes. Google describes Gemini for Mac as a desktop app. Its current product page lists Apple silicon and macOS Sequoia 15.0 or later as requirements. Google announced the Mac app on April 15, 2026. Google’s announcement and Gemini’s desktop page have the product details.
Apple Intelligence is not a separate app to install: it is integrated into macOS on compatible Macs. Apple says availability depends on the Mac model, language, and region. Check Apple’s current Apple Intelligence requirements for the specific Mac and location; do not assume that meeting a macOS version requirement alone is sufficient.
Both products can change as software and rollouts change. In particular, check whether a recently announced Gemini feature is available for your account and region rather than assuming every feature is live for every Mac user.

How do Gemini and Apple Intelligence access apps and context?

In practice, Gemini is a natural fit if you want a distinct desktop assistant that can work with Google services or user-selected screen context. Apple Intelligence is more closely woven into Mac system features and can use personal context across apps. Neither description means that every app, file, or screen is automatically available to an assistant: the specific feature, connections, and user action determine what context is involved.
What happens to your data?
Apple Intelligence and Private Cloud Compute
Apple says Apple Intelligence handles requests on-device where possible and uses Private Cloud Compute when a request needs more processing capacity. Apple states that information sent to Private Cloud Compute is used to fulfill the request, is not stored, and is not accessible to Apple. Apple also says personal data and interactions are not used to train its foundation models unless a user explicitly opts in to help improve them. Apple summarizes its Private Cloud Compute claim this way: “Your data is never stored and is used only to respond to your requests.” That statement concerns Private Cloud Compute processing; it should not be taken as a blanket description of every service or extension available through Apple Intelligence.
Gemini and Google services
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub covers the Mac app. It identifies prompts, uploaded material, generated content, recordings or transcripts, information from apps, browsers and devices, and connected-app information among the data categories relevant to Gemini. A connected service can introduce another data-handling boundary: Google says connected apps may handle information under their own terms and privacy policies as well as Google’s. Connecting Gmail, Drive, or another service is therefore different from asking a question without a connection; enable only the access you want to use.
What changes when you use Apple’s ChatGPT extension?
ChatGPT is optional, not the same processing path as Apple Intelligence itself. Apple says a request and attachments, plus limited contextual data, are sent to ChatGPT when the extension is used. If you do not sign in to a ChatGPT account, Apple says OpenAI must process the data to fulfill the request and must not retain the request or response or use it to train models, except where required by law. If you sign in, your ChatGPT account settings and OpenAI’s privacy policies apply. Apple also says you must confirm before photos or files are sent, even if ordinary request confirmations are disabled. Details are in Apple’s ChatGPT extension privacy disclosure.

Which one should you choose?
Choose based on the workflow and information you are comfortable sharing, not a broad label such as “private” or “more powerful.” The official product and privacy descriptions explain intended features and vendor-stated data handling, but do not establish a neutral head-to-head benchmark for accuracy, capability, or privacy.

- Consider Gemini if you want a separate Mac assistant, use Google services, or expect to ask about selected screen or window content. Check its account privacy controls and each connected app’s terms before enabling connections.
- Consider Apple Intelligence if you want system-integrated writing, Siri, or Shortcuts features and your Mac, language, and region are supported. Apple describes on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute, but review the separate ChatGPT boundary if you enable that extension.
- For sensitive material, decide first whether the task requires sending a prompt, file, screen context, or personal information to a service. Keep connections and extensions off unless they are needed, and inspect confirmation prompts rather than treating either assistant as automatically authorized to see everything.
- If compatibility is decisive, check both vendors’ current requirements and availability. Apple Intelligence varies by hardware, language, and region; Gemini’s announced capabilities can vary during rollout.
