Google is rolling out Gemini in Chrome to eligible Google Workspace users. It opens in a browser side panel and, with permission, can use the webpage you are viewing as context. Access depends on your managed account, administrator settings, device, region, language, age and Chrome version; Google says rollout is gradual, so qualifying users may not see it immediately.

What Gemini in Chrome does

Gemini in Chrome is a browser assistant that can respond using the currently viewed webpage when you give it permission. Google’s enterprise guide describes opening Ask Gemini in managed Chrome and using a side panel that stays open as you switch tabs. The feature is intended to let users ask questions about page content and work with information across sites without leaving the browser; those are Google’s and the rollout report’s descriptions, not independently verified performance claims. Google’s enterprise usage guide explains the managed-browser workflow.

Who can use it

Google’s current enterprise documentation says users must be at least 18 and meet supported device, region and language requirements. They also need the latest Chrome and enterprise access through a managed Google Account. Availability is gradual, and an eligible person might not have the feature yet. Google does not establish a complete license-by-license Workspace eligibility matrix in the cited guidance, so check current Workspace edition information with your administrator rather than assuming every subscription includes access. Google’s administrator overview lists current enterprise conditions.

  • Supported enterprise devices listed by Google include macOS, Windows, Chromebook Plus and iOS in supported regions; Android is listed for the United States.
  • Gemini in Chrome is unavailable in Incognito mode.
  • Google’s troubleshooting guidance for a missing Ask Gemini icon currently specifies Chrome version 147 or later. Because browser requirements can change, consult the live troubleshooting instructions if the icon is missing.

Chrome Unboxed’s October 3, 2025 rollout report described the initial availability as US-only and English-only, for users 18 and older, and said customers under a HIPAA Business Associate Amendment were blocked. Those were launch-era conditions, not a reliable statement of today’s full geographic and language coverage: Google’s current administrator documentation lists broader supported regions and languages. The October 3, 2025 report provides the historical framing.

How to get Gemini in Chrome with a work account

  1. Confirm with your Workspace administrator that Gemini access is enabled for your organization or assigned group, and that your account, device and location meet Google’s current requirements.
  2. Update Chrome to the latest version available for your device. If Ask Gemini is missing, check the version requirement in Google’s live troubleshooting page.
  3. Sign in to Chrome with your managed work Google Account. Google’s getting-started guide describes this step and the side-panel workflow.
  4. Look for Ask Gemini in Chrome and open it. Follow the prompt to grant permission to use the page when you want the current webpage included as context.

If you do not see the feature after these checks, availability may still be rolling out. Ask your administrator to verify both the relevant access settings and your organizational assignment.

Can a Workspace administrator turn it off?

Yes. Google says enterprise access depends on both the Gemini app setting and Chrome’s GeminiSettings policy. Administrators can target an organizational unit or a configuration group; when both apply, group settings override organizational-unit settings. Google says policy changes typically take effect within minutes, but may take up to 24 hours. See Google’s admin setup guidance for the current controls.

Chrome Unboxed described the feature at launch as on by default for organizations that already had the Gemini app enabled, with administrators able to control it by domain, organizational unit or group. Treat that as a description of the 2025 rollout, not a substitute for checking the current settings that apply to your organization.

Does Gemini in Chrome read the page you are viewing?

It can use the current page as context if you give it permission. Google describes the assistant as using the viewed webpage to provide relevant responses. The permission matters: page context is not simply an assumption that every open page is automatically sent to Gemini. The side panel can remain available while you switch tabs, but consult the in-product permission prompts and your organization’s policies for how a particular interaction is handled.

What privacy protections apply to Workspace use?

Google says Workspace protections apply when an enterprise user uses Gemini in Chrome with a managed work account. Its administrator documentation states: “Your content is not human reviewed or used for Generative AI model training outside your domain without permission.” Google also says interactions remain within the organization, prompts, current-tab context and generated responses are not used to train generative AI models outside the domain without permission, and existing Workspace data protections apply. These are Google’s stated commitments for Workspace use, not a claim about consumer accounts or other terms. See Google’s administrator documentation and its enterprise privacy information.

Is Gemini in Chrome available outside the US?

Google’s current administrator documentation lists supported regions and languages beyond the US and English, so the original US/English rollout description should not be treated as the present global boundary. Availability still depends on Google’s supported-region and language conditions, device support and gradual rollout. Check the live regional list in Google’s administrator overview; availability for an individual organization can also depend on its settings.
