The title appears to refer to Gemini’s memory of past chats—a likely interpretation, since Google describes Gemini using earlier conversations to personalize responses and announced in March 2026 that its past-chats feature was being renamed memory. Gemini also began rolling out ways to bring context from other AI assistants into the app. These features overlap with capabilities in Claude and ChatGPT, but they are not identical.
What Gemini’s memory does
When enabled, Gemini can use information from past Gemini chats to tailor responses and may suggest follow-up tasks based on those conversations, according to Google’s Gemini Apps Help page. That is cross-chat personalization: context from earlier conversations can inform a later one. It is distinct from importing a chat archive from another assistant, which is a separate feature described in Google’s March 26, 2026 announcement.
Who can use it, and where
Google’s current Help page says Gemini memory requires a personal Google Account, Keep Activity turned on, and an account holder who is at least 18. It is unavailable for work, school, and supervised accounts. Google lists the Gemini mobile and web apps, Gemini in Chrome where available, and Gemini on a smartwatch among the supported surfaces; it also says memory is unavailable in some experiences, including Gems and Live chats. Availability and labels can change, so check the Help page for the latest account and feature requirements.
How to manage Gemini’s memory
- Turn memory off: Use Gemini’s settings to switch the memory feature off.
- Review or delete chats: Open Gemini Apps Activity to inspect and delete past conversations. Google cautions that a deleted chat may take a short time to stop affecting personalization.
- Ask or correct: You can ask Gemini whether it used information from past chats, or tell it directly in a conversation what it should correct.
- Consider connected apps: Google says disconnecting a connected app may not remove information already present in a past chat; deleting chats alone may not remove information held in the connected app.
Google’s earlier Temporary Chats announcement said those chats would not appear in recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity and would not be used to personalize Gemini or train Google’s AI models. It also said they might be retained for up to 72 hours to respond and process feedback. That is wording from an earlier product announcement, not a guarantee that current terms are unchanged; consult Google’s current privacy information before relying on it.

Importing context from another assistant
Google’s March 26, 2026 announcement described two distinct import options and said they were starting to roll out. That announcement does not establish that either option is available to every account.
Import a preference summary
Ask the other assistant to summarize what it knows about your preferences and useful background, then paste that summary into Gemini. This brings over a compact set of context, rather than every conversation.

Import a chat-history ZIP
Google also described uploading a ZIP file containing chat history from other AI providers. The announcement says users can then search those conversations and continue threads in Gemini. This archive-based option is different from adding a short preference summary: it is intended to bring over conversation history, not just a distilled set of personal details.

All three services offer ways for context to reach beyond a single conversation, but their documented mechanisms and controls differ. “Memory” should not be treated as one standardized feature across the products.

|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini | Can personalize responses using past Gemini chats; Google also announced importing a summary or a ZIP of another provider’s chat history. | Memory can be switched off; past chats can be reviewed or deleted in Gemini Apps Activity; users can ask about use of past-chat information or correct it in chat. | Google announced summary and archive imports as a rollout. The Help page describes past-chat personalization. |
| ChatGPT | OpenAI distinguishes saved memories from information derived from past chats. | OpenAI says turning off reference to chat history schedules derived information for deletion within 30 days, while source chats remain unless separately deleted. Deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory. | See OpenAI’s memory documentation for the distinctions and controls. |
| Claude | Anthropic documents memory and past-chat search. | Users can inspect and edit remembered topics, turn memory off for one chat, or use incognito chats. Claude’s documentation says it provides citations to original chats when referencing past conversations through search. | Anthropic describes memory import and export as experimental and in active development. See Claude’s memory documentation. |
The practical differences are whether context is explicitly saved or automatically derived, whether you can search the original conversations, how directly you can inspect and edit retained information, and what private or one-off modes are available. Google’s import announcement adds a migration path for Gemini, but does not make its memory system equivalent to Claude’s or ChatGPT’s.
