Google’s Gemini Deep Think is an advanced reasoning mode for difficult problems, but access is limited: Google’s current Help page says the Gemini app feature is for Google AI Ultra subscribers and requires the Pro model. Google now calls it Gemini 3.1 Deep Think; its responses can take a few minutes, and the published benchmark scores are Google-reported results—not a promise that it will solve any particular task.

What Gemini Deep Think is

Deep Think is a reasoning mode in the Gemini app intended for problems that benefit from more extensive analysis. Google introduced it in November 2025 as an enhanced reasoning capability and launched it for Google AI Ultra subscribers on December 4, 2025. The launch positioned it for complex math, science and logic problems. Google’s current DeepMind product page uses the name Gemini 3.1 Deep Think and says it is built on Gemini 3.1 Pro.

Google describes the mode as providing “maximum parallel reasoning.” In practical terms, it is aimed at harder questions rather than quick, routine prompts; Google says a response generally takes a few minutes. That extra reasoning time can be a poor fit when speed matters more than depth.

Who can use Deep Think, and how to turn it on

Google’s current Gemini Apps Help page says Deep Think is “AI Ultra only” and requires the Pro model. Availability may depend on location, and Google notes that names, versions and usage limits can change.

  1. Open the Gemini app and check that your account has Google AI Ultra access.
  2. Choose the Pro model in the model selector.
  3. Select Deep Think in the prompt controls, if that option appears, then submit your question.

The model-selection and prompt-control steps above reflect Google’s December 2025 launch instructions; app labels can change. If Deep Think is absent, consult the Help page and check your account, region and current app options rather than assuming the feature is available to every Gemini user.

Google’s February 12, 2026 update also described a Gemini API early-access program for selected researchers, engineers and enterprises. That is limited early access, not general API availability.

What Deep Think is intended to do

Google’s initial examples centered on complex math, science and logic. Its February 2026 update broadened the stated focus to scientific research and practical engineering, including work with incomplete or messy data and problems without a single obvious answer. The goal is to help reason through these tasks, not to guarantee a correct result.

Google cited early testing by Rutgers mathematician Lisa Carbone reviewing a technical mathematics paper, Duke University’s Wang Lab optimizing crystal-growth fabrication methods, and Google R&D lead Anupam Pathak testing physical-component design. These are examples reported by Google, not independent evaluations of the feature.

What Google’s benchmark results show

Google has published results on several challenging benchmarks. The figures below are company-reported and tied to the dates and configurations stated; they should not be treated as a direct prediction of performance on a reader’s own work.

Benchmark or evaluation Google-reported result Context
Humanity’s Last Exam 41.0% Google’s initial December 2025 announcement; without tools.
ARC-AGI-2 45.1% Google’s initial December 2025 announcement; with code execution.
Humanity’s Last Exam 48.4% Google’s February 2026 update; without tools.
ARC-AGI-2 84.6% Google’s February 2026 update; Google says the result was verified by the ARC Prize Foundation.
Codeforces Elo 3455 Reported by Google in February 2026.
International Math Olympiad 2025 Gold-medal-level performance Reported by Google in February 2026.
International Physics Olympiad 2025 theory 87.7% Reported on Google DeepMind’s current product page.
International Chemistry Olympiad 2025 theory 82.8% Reported on Google DeepMind’s current product page.
CMT-Benchmark 50.5% Reported by Google in February 2026.

Google DeepMind’s Gemini 3.1 Deep Think page includes a benchmark comparison and links to evaluation methodology. Results depend on the benchmark setup and tool configuration; a high score does not establish that the model will answer a specific question correctly. The figures are also not a controlled, independent comparison of every available AI model.

Is Deep Think better than Gemini Pro?

That depends on the task. Deep Think is a reasoning mode that requires the Pro model, not a separate consumer plan or a simple replacement for all Pro use. Google presents it for complex problems where additional reasoning is useful, while its multi-minute response time and higher usage consumption make it less suited to routine questions or situations where speed is the priority.

For a fair comparison, look for results on the same benchmark, with the same tool access and evaluation conditions. Google’s published scores document its own reported performance on named tests; they do not establish universal superiority on everyday prompts or a reader’s particular research or engineering task.

What to keep in mind before relying on it

  • Check important answers: published benchmark performance is not a reliability guarantee for your specific prompt.
  • Allow time: Google says a Deep Think query generally takes a few minutes.
  • Watch usage: Google says advanced models and higher thinking levels consume more of a user’s available usage.
  • Verify current access: Google warns that availability, model names, versions and usage limits can change.
  • Distinguish app access from API access: app availability is restricted to AI Ultra, while API access described by Google is a selected-participant early-access program.
