Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental reached Android in a staged rollout in December 2024, first through the Google app beta channel and then to stable users. It was an early-preview model focused on speed, multimodal input and output, and built-in tools—not a permanently supported Android option. Google later released a generally available Gemini 2.0 Flash model and listed the experimental model for shutdown.
How Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental arrived on Android
Google announced Gemini 2.0 Flash Experimental on December 11, 2024, initially making a chat-optimized version available to Gemini users on desktop and mobile web. Google said the mobile app would follow. The Android rollout began in the Google app beta channel on December 16, then reached the stable channel on December 19. Google’s announcement and contemporaneous Android rollout coverage document those stages.
Beta and stable rollout
Google app version 15.50 added a model switcher for beta users. Its choices were “1.5 Pro,” “1.5 Flash,” and “2.0 Flash Experimental.” Stable-channel availability followed three days later, with free Gemini and Advanced users included in the reported rollout. This was a staged release, so access depended on rollout timing rather than a separate Android installation.
What the experimental model was designed to do
Google presented 2.0 Flash as a low-latency workhorse and said it was twice as fast as Gemini 1.5 Pro on key benchmarks. That speed comparison is Google’s own published claim, not an independent benchmark result. The company also highlighted multimodal reasoning, long-context understanding, complex-instruction following, planning, and compositional function calling as foundations for more agent-like experiences.

Google’s developer changelog described preview capabilities beyond chat: bidirectional streaming through the Live API; responses that could combine text, images, and speech; and built-in tool use for code execution, Search, and function calling. Google also described image, video, and audio input, as well as steerable multilingual text-to-speech output. These developer capabilities should not be read as a promise that every feature was available in the Android app.
Why some Gemini features were missing
Google explicitly framed the consumer release as an early preview: “While we’re excited for you to try it, remember it’s an early preview and might not work as expected.” It also warned that “some Gemini features won’t be compatible with this model in its experimental state.” At launch, Android rollout reports said file upload was unavailable. A missing upload option or incompatible feature was therefore a limitation of this experimental model experience, not necessarily a problem with the user’s phone.

Can you still get the experimental model?
The Android launch was a historical December 2024 rollout, not evidence that the experimental option remains available now. Google’s maintained developer changelog lists gemini-2.0-flash-exp among models scheduled for shutdown on December 9, 2025. For developer use, consult the current Gemini API changelog rather than relying on old instructions for the experimental endpoint. The later generally available model is a distinct release, and the cited developer release does not establish that it is selectable in today’s Android app.
