You can overclock a GeForce GTX 680 by raising its power target and then applying small GPU and memory clock offsets in a board-partner utility. There is no universal stable offset: GPU Boost adjusts clocks dynamically, and the result depends on the card’s BIOS, cooler, condition, workload, and temperature. Start with a stock baseline, change one setting at a time, and keep the GPU well below its 98 °C maximum specification.

How GTX 680 GPU Boost affects an overclock

The GTX 680 uses first-generation, power-target-based GPU Boost. At NVIDIA’s published baseline, its 3D base clock is 1006 MHz and its typical boost clock is 1058 MHz. GPU Boost can raise clock and voltage automatically when power, temperature, and workload conditions permit. NVIDIA described the feature as autonomous, requiring no game profiles or user intervention for its automatic boost behavior.

Overclocking adds to that dynamic behavior rather than setting one guaranteed operating frequency. Tom’s Hardware observed a GTX 680 moving between 1071 and 1124 MHz during one benchmark run. Describe your result as the applied offset and the sustained clock range observed in your own workloads, not as one fixed clock that every GTX 680 will hold. The 2012 AnandTech review distinguishes this first-generation power-based behavior from later temperature-based GPU Boost implementations, so guidance for newer GPU Boost generations should not be assumed to apply unchanged.

What you need to know before tuning

Power target is not the same as power draw

NVIDIA specifies 170 W typical board power for the GTX 680 and GPU Boost. That is a design figure, not a guarantee of measured draw under every workload. Actual power depends on what the card is doing and the power target selected in the utility. Raising the target gives the GPU more room to boost when power is the limiting factor; it does not ensure a performance increase if temperature or voltage is the constraint.

Temperature ceiling versus daily operation

AnandTech cites 98 °C as the GTX 680’s maximum GPU temperature. Treat that as a specification ceiling, not a recommended daily target. Lower sustained temperatures are preferable for managing fan noise and supporting long-term operation. If the card has a failing fan, clogged heatsink, or dried thermal compound, address that condition before increasing clocks or voltage.

Why no offset or voltage is guaranteed

Cards differ in silicon quality, BIOS limits, cooler and PCB design, ambient temperature, power-supply quality, and workload. A tested NVIDIA example exceeded 1.2 GHz, but that demonstrates what one card achieved, not a safe or stable setting for every GTX 680. Do not treat another card’s voltage, offset, or benchmark result as a preset for yours.

Prepare the card and establish a baseline

  1. Identify the exact card. Record the manufacturer and model, cooler design, BIOS, power-connector arrangement, and whether it is reference or factory-overclocked. Older GTX 680 cards can have materially different cooling and power limits.
  2. Check condition and airflow. Clean dust from the card and case, confirm that all fans work, and check that the case can move air through the system. Repair cooling faults before tuning.
  3. Choose a monitoring and tuning utility. NVIDIA’s documented approach is to use a board-partner overclocking utility. Available controls and their permitted ranges can vary by card and utility; do not assume a particular power or voltage control will be exposed.
  4. Record stock behavior. Run a repeatable benchmark or game sequence and note GPU temperature, fan speed, power behavior, GPU clock, memory clock, and performance. Save a stock profile so you can restore the original settings immediately.

Overclock the GTX 680 step by step

  1. Raise the power target first. In the utility, increase the target only within the range the utility permits. Apply the change and observe how the card behaves under the same workload. A higher target is headroom, not a promise of faster performance.
  2. Increase the GPU clock offset in small steps. Apply a modest increment, then run the same short test used for your baseline. Watch for visual artifacts, driver recovery, application crashes, unexpected clock drops, or excessive temperature. At the first reproducible failure, revert at least one step.
  3. Tune memory separately. Return to the last stable core setting, then raise the memory offset in small increments and retest. Memory instability can cause visual corruption or crashes even when the core appears stable.
  4. Validate the combined settings. Once each offset passes short checks separately, test the combined profile with several longer workloads, including the games or applications you actually use. A successful benchmark pass only supports stability in that workload; it does not prove universal stability.
  5. Save a known-good profile. Keep the stock profile and save the final tested settings separately. If failures recur, restore stock settings and retest before changing anything else.

Should you raise voltage?

Voltage changes are an advanced step, not a required part of the basic process. More voltage can increase heat and power consumption, and the card’s BIOS or utility may limit what can be changed. AnandTech’s testing of the EVGA Classified found different behavior with and without overvolting and higher wall power after the power target was raised. That result is specific to its tested setup, but it illustrates the trade-off: additional voltage or power headroom can have a real energy and cooling cost.

There is no universal safe voltage established for every GTX 680. If you lack a card-specific reason and a way to monitor temperatures, power, and stability carefully, leave voltage at its default. Do not use a voltage value from a different model or sample as a guarantee.

How to tell whether the overclock is worthwhile

Compare stock and overclocked performance using the same system, driver, ambient conditions, settings, and workload. Record the exact card variant and whether it is used or refurbished, the ambient temperature, driver version, and tuning settings. Compare:

  • Sustained boost clock range, rather than only the offset entered.
  • Frame rate at your actual resolution, or completion time for the application you use.
  • Peak GPU temperature and fan speed or perceived fan noise.
  • Board power if reported by the utility, or wall power if measured at the system level; these are different measurements.
  • Stability across multiple workloads, not just one benchmark.

A higher clock is not automatically a better daily setting if it brings substantially more heat, fan noise, or instability for little performance improvement. Keep the profile that works reliably in your own applications.

Common problems and recovery

  • Artifacts or flickering: Return to the last stable setting; if you were tuning memory, reduce its offset first. Retest before changing the core.
  • Crash, driver recovery, or a failed test: Revert the most recent change. If the problem persists, load the saved stock profile and confirm that the card behaves normally at stock settings.
  • Clock falls during a workload: Check temperature, power behavior, and fan operation. GPU Boost is dynamic, so an offset alone cannot ensure a sustained frequency when another limit is active.
  • Unexpectedly high heat or noise: Stop the test and restore stock settings. Check dust, airflow, and fan condition before trying again; do not use 98 °C as an operating target.
