Start with Gears of War: Reloaded. It is a remaster of the original 2006 game—not a new sequel—and gives first-time players the clearest introduction to the series’ opening story. For the main saga, continue with Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3, Gears of War 4, and Gears 5. Gears of War: Judgment is an optional prequel detour, not a necessary first game.
Recommended Gears of War play order
- Gears of War: Reloaded — the remastered version of the original 2006 game.
- Gears of War 2 — continue the original Marcus Fenix-led saga.
- Gears of War 3 — continue that saga.
- Gears of War 4 — begin a later-generation saga with JD Fenix, Kait, and Del.
- Gears 5 — continue the later saga, with Kait at the center.
This is a straightforward story-first path through the main games. Xbox’s franchise page lists the series entries; its descriptions identify Gears of War 4 as a new saga and Gears 5 as Kait’s story. The official pages do not establish a complete chronology for every franchise title, so this order focuses on the main saga rather than claiming to rank every game by in-world date.
Why start with Gears of War: Reloaded?
Reloaded brings the original game forward as a remaster. Xbox describes it as the original Gears of War and says it includes the breadth of content associated with Ultimate Edition, including post-launch additions such as a bonus campaign act and multiplayer content. That makes it the most direct way for a newcomer to begin with the series’ starting story in the remastered release. See the Xbox Wire announcement and the original game listing.
Should you play Gears of War: Judgment before Gears 2?
No. Judgment is a prequel set in the immediate aftermath of Emergence Day, according to its Xbox listing. Its earlier setting makes it an optional side trip, but it is not the clearest opening for a first run through the main saga. If you want to explore it, play it after Reloaded; then return to the main path with Gears of War 2.
