What is the “ballsack” enemy in Gears of War: E-Day?
It is the spore maiden, a new floating monster described in Zack Zwiezen’s Kotaku article published October 5, 2026. “Ballsack” is the article’s joking nickname for the creature, not the name used for it there.

Zwiezen writes that a spore maiden can release smaller spores that float around and fire needles. He says it can keep producing them until the maiden is defeated, turning the enemy into both a durable target and a continuing source of projectile pressure.
Why does the spore maiden feel so tough?
In Zwiezen’s experience, the maiden’s durability is a major part of the frustration. He reports using more than 200 Lancer bullets against one on standard difficulty, including many hits to its eye. That number describes a single writer’s playthrough; it is not an official health value, a tested damage benchmark, or a universal amount of ammunition required.

The smaller needle-shooting spores add another threat while the main enemy remains active. Zwiezen also reports encountering multiple spore maidens in some fights and says he disliked the creatures’ durability and the pacing of those encounters. Those are his gameplay impressions, not independently verified behavior or a developer statement about balance.
What does the article say about E-Day?
Kotaku presents Gears of War: E-Day as a prequel centered on the early Locust invasion and reports that it is out on Xbox and PC.
