Garry Newman, creator of Garry’s Mod and a developer of S&box, acknowledged that S&box’s launch and free weekend went badly. His central criticism was that an abundance of low-value content can make worthwhile games harder to find. He described changes to creator incentives and content discovery as plans, not confirmed updates.
What Newman said about S&box’s launch
In a response to criticism following S&box’s free-to-play weekend, Newman said, “The launch was shit. The free weekend was shit,” according to GamesRadar’s October 5, 2026 report. He also acknowledged that the rollout damaged the game’s reception and its relationship with the Garry’s Mod community.
Newman’s broader point was not that S&box simply needs more content. He described content volume as a discovery problem: a large pool of weak or unfinished entries can make it difficult for players to locate games worth playing.
Why too much content can make discovery harder
Newman contrasted “20 good games” with “500 tech demos and clickers,” a comparison also reproduced by PC Gamer. Those figures are illustrative, not a verified count of S&box’s catalogue. The point is that a large number of listings does not necessarily mean players have a useful selection: low-value entries can add browsing effort and obscure stronger projects.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That makes discovery and creator incentives connected issues. If the platform rewards quantity, creators may have reason to publish more entries even when those entries add little value for players. Newman said Facepunch planned to change Playfund incentives to avoid encouraging low-value content.
What changes Newman said Facepunch planned
A Workshop-style way to find and install content
Newman described moving toward a Workshop-style model in which users subscribe to and install games and maps, instead of being presented with a large selection to browse and choose from. Such a system would change how users access content; the reports do not establish that it has improved discovery or that the model has shipped.

Changes to Playfund
He also said Facepunch planned to revise Playfund so that it would not incentivize low-value content. The intended effect is clearer: reduce rewards for entries that add little for players. The available reports do not specify the revised rules or confirm their implementation.
A shift in character direction
Newman said he intended to stop developing the Citizen character direction and push human characters forward. This is a reported intention, not confirmation of a completed character redesign.

- He identified content discovery and low-value entries as problems, and described proposed changes to Playfund and content installation.
- He said he wanted to shift character development away from the Citizen direction.
- The reports establish these statements and plans, but do not confirm whether the proposed changes have since been implemented.
GamesRadar and PC Gamer reproduce Newman’s comments, but the original YouTube comment was not independently verified for this account. The numerical comparison should therefore be read as his example, not a platform statistic.
