There is no single best set of health and privacy settings for every Garmin Venu 3 owner. A practical starting point is to keep wrist heart rate on if you rely on sleep or stress tracking, choose pulse-oximeter tracking based on whether you need overnight readings, and review Garmin Connect’s visibility, upload, and connected-app controls separately. Use the watch’s passcode and notification settings to limit what someone can see on the device. Each change has trade-offs: disabling a sensor can remove the features that depend on it, while turning off data uploads can limit Garmin Connect.
Which settings should you review first?
Review two separate sets of controls: what the watch measures and displays, and what Garmin Connect uploads or shares. The first affects health insights, alerts, notifications, and battery life. The second affects activity visibility, data transfer to your account, and access granted to other apps. A private activity is not the same as data that never reaches Garmin’s servers.
Start with the controls that match your concern rather than switching everything off. If you want fewer sleep readings, change Pulse Oximeter tracking. If you want to keep messages off the watch face, adjust Smart Notifications. If you want to limit who can see an activity, review its Garmin Connect privacy setting. Those changes solve different problems.
Which Venu 3 health settings are worth changing?
For many owners, the useful adjustments are setting a realistic sleep window, choosing suitable heart-rate alerts, and deciding how often Pulse Ox should run. These are personal choices, not a universal health preset.

How should I set heart-rate and wellness alerts?
On the watch, hold the B button and open Settings > Notifications & Alerts > Health & Wellness. Review High Alert and Low Alert, then decide whether Move Alert, Stress Alerts, Rest Alerts, Daily Summary, and goal reminders help you or create noise.
High and low heart-rate alerts are triggered only after at least 10 minutes of inactivity. The low-heart-rate alert does not fire during the sleep window selected on the watch. Garmin describes these as alerts for unusually high or low readings, not continuous medical monitoring. Set a threshold with a clinician if your health circumstances call for one; there is no appropriate universal beats-per-minute threshold to recommend here. Garmin says the Venu 3 is not a medical device for diagnosing conditions. See Garmin’s heart-rate alert documentation.
Should I leave Pulse Ox on all day?
Usually, choose All Day only if you have a reason to want daytime readings as well as overnight readings. Garmin warns that automatic pulse-ox tracking reduces battery life. On Demand is a battery-conscious option for spot checks, while During Sleep is the setting to choose if you want overnight measurements and breathing-variation insights.

|---|---|---|---|
| On Demand | When you request a reading | No ongoing overnight tracking | Less automatic tracking and lower tracking-related battery use |
| During Sleep | While you sleep, based on the watch’s sleep window | Available | Overnight tracking uses more battery than On Demand |
| All Day | During sleep and at times while inactive during the day | Available | Most automatic tracking, and the greatest battery trade-off of these choices |
Change the mode at Settings > Watch Sensors > Pulse Oximeter > Tracking Mode. Unusual sleeping positions can produce unusually low readings, so do not treat a single reading as a diagnosis. Garmin’s Pulse Ox documentation also cautions that the watch is not intended to diagnose or monitor a medical condition.
Does turning off wrist heart rate stop sleep tracking?
Yes. Wrist heart rate is used by sleep tracking, all-day stress, wrist-based Pulse Ox, and other calculations. Garmin’s documented default is Auto; find it at Settings > Watch Sensors > Wrist Heart Rate. Leave it on if you want those dependent features.
Turning wrist heart rate off is not equivalent to replacing it with a chest strap. A compatible strap can provide heart-rate data during an activity, but it does not provide the Venu 3’s all-day wrist sensing. Broadcasting heart rate to paired devices is a separate setting; Garmin notes that broadcasting also decreases battery life. See the Venu 3 series owner’s manual.

Why does the sleep window matter?
Set your usual sleep hours in Garmin Connect or in the watch’s settings, and keep them reasonably aligned with your routine. The watch uses that window for sleep summaries and for the exception that suppresses low-heart-rate alerts during sleep. If your schedule changes, update the window so those features use the hours you intend.

Should I turn off Activity Tracking?
Usually not just to stop one kind of activity record. Under Settings > Activity Tracking, Move IQ and Auto Activity Start are separate controls. Auto Activity Start can create timed walking or running activities; disabling it may be enough if that is what you want to stop.
Turning off Activity Tracking entirely has a wider effect: the watch stops recording steps, floors climbed, intensity minutes, sleep, and Move IQ events. That is a substantial loss of tracking, not a narrow privacy switch. Garmin’s statement that a manually started activity records data while its timer is running describes that timed activity; it should not be read as a claim that other health tracking only happens during workouts.
How can I limit what appears on the watch?
Use the Smart Notifications controls to decide when notifications arrive and whether their content is displayed. On the watch, open Settings > Notifications & Alerts > Smart Notifications. Review General Use, During Activity, During Sleep Do Not Disturb, and the notification Privacy preference.
On Android, Garmin documents app-level selection in Garmin Connect at Settings > Notifications > App Notifications. On iPhone, Garmin points users to iOS notification settings; notifications enabled for the iPhone can also appear on the watch. Labels may vary with app and operating-system versions, so if a path differs, look for notification controls in the relevant phone settings as well as Garmin Connect.

How do I protect the watch if it leaves my wrist?
Set a passcode if you want a barrier against someone accessing the watch after it is removed. Go to Settings > System > Passcode > Set Passcode and create a four-digit code. The passcode is also used for Garmin Pay when applicable. Garmin documents a temporary lockout after three incorrect attempts and reset consequences after five; an unpaired watch may be affected differently, so choose a code you can remember. Read Garmin’s passcode instructions before relying on it.

Auto Lock is a different control: it helps prevent accidental touches. It is not a substitute for a passcode protecting access when the watch is off your wrist.
Are Garmin Connect activities private by default?
Garmin says activity data starts private by default, but check your own profile and activity controls rather than assuming every item is hidden. In the app, look under Settings > Profile & Privacy; on the web, use Account Settings > Privacy Settings. Review profile visibility, new and past activities, and individual activities.
Privacy settings for activities do not mean no data is stored or processed by Garmin Connect. Garmin’s policy says activity data is private by default, but challenges, groups, and other interactions can expose information in context. Garmin support also notes that activity or daily summaries may include heart rate and location. Your displayed name and profile picture may remain visible even when activity visibility is restricted. Check the Garmin privacy policy and current account controls for the latest details.
How do I stop Garmin sharing data with other apps?
Review Garmin Connect’s connected-app or account-access settings and revoke connections you no longer use. Garmin identifies categories that authorized third parties may receive, including health metrics, sleep, heart rate, stress, activity performance, and location. The exact data available depends on the connection and permissions.
Revoking access at Garmin is one part of the review. Also inspect the destination app’s account and privacy controls; it may retain or use data it received previously according to its own terms. Removing a connection should not be treated as deleting copies already held by another service.
Does Device Upload stop Garmin from getting my data?
Device Upload can stop new data from the Garmin device from uploading to Garmin Connect, but it is not a complete data firewall or a deletion tool. Garmin says manually entered data and data from third-party sources may still reach Connect. Many Connect features also become limited or unavailable when device uploads are off.

If your goal is to keep new watch data out of Connect, inspect the Device Upload control. If your goal is to remove existing account data, handle that separately through Garmin account and privacy controls; switching off uploads does not itself erase data already uploaded.
Should I turn off incident detection for privacy?
Not automatically. Incident detection can share available GPS location with emergency contacts during certain outdoor activities, so it has a real privacy cost—but it may also help contacts locate you after an incident. Choose activity by activity based on whether that safety benefit is useful for you.
Garmin says the feature requires emergency contacts, a connected phone, and network service, and is available only for certain outdoor activities. After an incident, a 15-second cancellation window gives you time to stop the alert; otherwise, emergency contacts may receive your name and available GPS location. It does not automatically call emergency services and is supplemental rather than a replacement for them. See Garmin’s incident detection documentation.
What should I do before selling or giving away the Venu 3?
On the watch, use Settings > System > Reset > Delete Data and Reset Settings to remove entered information and activity history from the device. Do not confuse this with Reset Default Settings, which Garmin says retains activity history and downloaded content.
Resetting the watch addresses data on the device, not data already held in a Garmin account or shared with another service. Review the account and connected-app controls separately if you want to address those copies too. Garmin’s Venu 3 series owner’s manual describes the reset options.

Think through six questions: what data the watch captures, where it is stored, who can see it, how much battery automatic sensing uses, which insights disappear when a sensor is disabled, and whether a privacy change affects safety. Then change the narrowest relevant control and check its consequences.

The Garmin Venu 3 series owner’s manual identifies itself as version 8, dated December 2025. Garmin’s published smartwatch-mode battery estimates are up to 14 days for Venu 3 and up to 10 days for Venu 3S, with actual battery life varying by features used. Those estimates help explain why automatic sensing choices matter, but do not predict an individual watch’s battery life.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change Garmin privacy settings from a computer instead of my phone?
Yes. Garmin documents an Account Settings area on the web for privacy controls, including activity visibility. Some controls—especially device notifications and upload behavior—are managed in Garmin Connect or on the watch rather than through the web privacy page.
Will changing an activity to private remove it from a challenge or group?
Do not assume that one privacy switch controls every interaction. Garmin notes that challenges, groups, and other interactions can disclose information, so review the relevant group or challenge participation and visibility controls as well.

Does resetting my Venu 3 erase data from Garmin Connect?
No. The watch reset removes information from the device, but it does not by itself delete data already uploaded to your Garmin account or data shared with a connected service. Address account-held and third-party copies separately.
Can the Venu 3 detect a medical problem with Pulse Ox or heart-rate alerts?
Garmin says the watch is not intended to diagnose or monitor a medical condition. Treat readings and alerts as wellness information, not a diagnosis or a substitute for medical advice.
