Choose a Garmin Approach watch for quick, hands-free distances to mapped course features and a view of hazards; choose a dedicated laser rangefinder when you want a reading to the actual flag or another visible target and are willing to aim. If you want both kinds of information, Garmin documents a way to pair its Approach S44 or S50 with the Approach Z30.

What is the difference between a golf watch and a rangefinder?

A Garmin Approach watch uses satellite positioning and mapped course data to show distances to features such as the green and hazards. You can check it at a glance without aiming at anything. A laser rangefinder is pointed at a selected object—often the flag—and returns a distance to that target. Garmin outlines this distinction in its GPS-versus-laser guide.

These measurements answer different questions. The watch gives you course context and a consistent reference to mapped features; the laser gives you a target-specific reading when you can see and aim at the object you care about. A laser reading to the flag is not the same as a watch’s distance to the middle of the green.

What does an Approach watch measure?

On the Approach S50, the watch shows distances to the front, middle, and back of the green. Garmin’s S50 manual explains that it does not calculate the actual pin location, since pin positions change. That makes the green readings useful references, not a promise of distance to the day’s hole location.

#1 Best Overall
Garmin Approach® Z10, Compact Laser Rangefinder
  • Compact laser rangefinder measures the distance to the pin from up to 350 yards away with 6X magnification in less than 1 second — and vibrational feedback once you’ve locked onto the pin
  • Reveal everything in play with the range relay feature, a laser range arc directly on your wrist, when the rangefinder is paired to your compatible Garmin device or the Garmin Golf smartphone app
  • Ranged distances synced to your compatible Garmin device stay dynamic even as you approach your target
  • Get distance to the pin, the front and the back of the green displayed through the viewfinder when paired to your compatible device
  • PlaysLike Distance feature adjusts yardages for uphill or downhill shots based on the change in elevation from where you are standing

Garmin announced the S44 and S50 with more than 43,000 preloaded course maps, hazard view, and up to 15 hours of battery life in GPS mode. These are manufacturer-published figures, not independent test results. Check that your course is supported and consider your own round length and charging habits when weighing battery life.

Which one fits your playing style?

Choose a watch for quick course guidance

  • You want to check distances without taking out and aiming a separate device.
  • You value mapped information, such as green distances and hazard locations, while planning a shot.
  • You prefer one device on your wrist and want golf or smartwatch functions beyond a target distance.

Choose a laser when the exact visible target matters

  • You often want a distance to the flag, a tree, or another specific object rather than a mapped point on the green.
  • You are comfortable handling the rangefinder and aiming it at the target.
  • You can usually see the target you want to measure. A laser’s usefulness depends on having a line of sight and selecting the right object.

Consider using both

If you want mapped course context as well as target-specific readings, Garmin says the S44 and S50 can pair with its Approach Z30 laser rangefinder through Range Relay. Garmin describes the pairing as sending ranged distances to the compatible watch. Check current compatibility and setup details for your specific devices before buying.

How should you compare accuracy?

There is no universal accuracy winner established by the cited sources. The practical distinction is what each device measures: the watch reports distances to mapped course features, while the laser measures to the object you target. If your question is “How far to the flag?”, a laser can give that target-specific reading when you can aim at it. If your question is “Where is the green or hazard in relation to me?”, the watch’s mapped view may be more useful.

Do not treat a watch’s middle-of-green number as a pin reading, and do not assume a laser is useful when the desired object is hidden or difficult to identify. Choose according to the reference you actually use during a round.

What to check before buying

  • Target: Decide whether you mainly need mapped green and hazard distances or readings to visible objects such as the flag.
  • Handling: A watch is available on your wrist for a glance; a laser must be carried, raised, and aimed.
  • Features and subscriptions: Compare the exact watch model and the specific features you will use. Confirm which, if any, require Garmin Golf Membership.
  • Compatibility: For a hybrid setup, verify that the watch and laser model support the pairing feature you intend to use.
  • Total cost: Compare current local prices for the devices and any recurring membership you actually need. Garmin’s cited S44/S50 prices are January 2025 US launch MSRPs.
  • Course coverage and battery: Check the mapped courses you play and whether the manufacturer’s stated GPS-mode battery life suits your rounds.

Garmin also describes optional CT1 club tags for tracking clubs, shot locations, and distances. They are an analytics add-on, not a requirement for choosing between a watch and a rangefinder.
