These are broad premise-level distinctions, not a claim that every episode follows the same tone or pattern. The cited descriptions establish the series’ central setups, but do not support a season-by-season comparison of how often either story shifts between humor, drama, fantasy or horror.
Who protects the city?
Gargoyles centers protection on a clan; Buffy centers it on a chosen Slayer whose work depends on a circle of allies. Neither premise is best understood as a lone hero acting entirely on their own.
Goliath’s clan protects the city where it has awakened, even as it must conceal its existence and navigate a society unfamiliar with it. Detective Elisa Maza becomes part of the modern-day setup, connecting the gargoyles with human life in New York. Buffy creates a different kind of proximity between the ordinary and the extraordinary. Buffy is a young woman with friends and a life beyond fighting, even though she has been chosen to confront supernatural threats. The contrast makes her dual role—person and Slayer—central to the setup. It is not necessary to claim that every school or friendship scene has the same tone to see how the premise brings everyday life and danger together.
The Hellmouth adds a place-based dimension to Buffy’s setting. BOOM! Studios describes supernatural forces threatening Sunnydale in its account of its reimagined comics. That supports the recurring setting vocabulary of Sunnydale and the Hellmouth, but it should not be used to assign a specific comic plot to an episode of the television series.
How do myth, magic and monsters shape the settings?
Gargoyles draws on ancient displacement, enchantment and mythic figures; Buffy foregrounds the Slayer’s calling and threats such as vampires and demons. In Gargoyles, the clan has an ancient identity and a modern problem: how to protect a city whose residents may not know it exists, while finding a place in that city. Its stone-by-day, active-by-night condition supplies a practical reason for concealment, and its history makes the gap between its past and present part of the ongoing premise.

In Buffy, the Slayer’s calling gives the conflict a personal center. Buffy is chosen, but the presence of Giles and the Scooby Gang keeps the story from being only about individual strength. Her allies matter because the premise places an ongoing responsibility on a human character whose life also includes friendship and ordinary routines.

Which series should you start with?
Start with Gargoyles if the hook of an ancient clan trying to survive and protect modern Manhattan appeals to you. Start with Buffy the Vampire Slayer if you are more interested in a human hero balancing a supernatural calling with friends and everyday life.
That is a premise-based recommendation, not a verdict about quality. The two series offer different routes into supernatural storytelling: one asks what happens when an enchanted community wakes up in a changed world; the other follows a young woman chosen to confront the darkness around her, supported by people who help carry the work.

Later Buffy comics need to be identified by publisher and continuity rather than treated as one undifferentiated extension of the television series. Dark Horse catalogs Season Eight as following the destruction of the Hellmouth, while BOOM! Studios described its 2019 Buffy comics as a reimagining.
Those are distinct labels for distinct comic projects. A description of the BOOM! reimagining should not be used to explain a television episode, and the existence of a comic continuation does not make every later comic part of the original TV story. For a comparison focused on the shows’ premises, the television setups remain the clearest basis.
Readers who want a physical book after finishing the television series can look for Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight Volume 1: The Long Way Home, a softcover collection identified in Dark Horse’s backlist catalog. It is a post-television continuation, not a reference book for both shows or a substitute for the original series. Check the exact title and print format in a seller’s listing; the catalog reference does not establish current stock or price.
