A VPN usually does not lower ping by itself. It adds a stop between your device and the game server, which can add latency. It may help if your ISP’s direct route is poor, if you need to reduce exposure of your home IP in a game that connects players directly, or if you are gaming on public Wi-Fi. If your direct connection is stable and reaches the right server efficiently, no VPN is generally the better choice for minimizing latency.
What changes when you game through a VPN?
Without a VPN, your game traffic travels from your device through your internet provider’s network to the game server. With a VPN, it first travels to a VPN server, then onward to the game server. Mozilla describes this simply: “With a VPN, we have an added step.” That extra route can increase ping; a VPN’s encryption or “gaming” branding is not evidence that it will make a match faster.
There is an exception: the VPN server may give traffic a better route to the game server than the route your ISP uses. Whether that happens depends on your location, ISP routing, congestion, VPN endpoint, and game server. VolnaLink notes the possibility but also says direct connections usually have lower ping. Its numerical ping and performance claims are vendor editorial statements, not independently established results for players generally.
When might a VPN help?
Your direct route is unusually poor
If you have persistent lag, packet loss, or disconnects on an otherwise usable connection, compare your normal route with a VPN endpoint that has a plausible path to the game server. A VPN can sometimes bypass a poor ISP route, but it is just as possible to make the route longer or less stable. There is no universal ping threshold at which a VPN becomes worthwhile.

You want to reduce exposure of your home IP
In some game and network designs, other players can learn your home IP address through a direct connection. Routing traffic through a VPN can hide your home IP from those peers. It is not a guarantee against DDoS attacks: an attacker may target other infrastructure, and traffic reaching the VPN provider still depends on that provider’s network and protections.
You are gaming on public Wi-Fi
A VPN can encrypt the connection between your device and the VPN provider, which can be useful on an untrusted public network. It does not make you anonymous to every party, protect a compromised device, or replace strong account security and multifactor authentication. Proton lists public Wi-Fi as a gaming use case; its product claims are provider claims.

You have a specific reason to connect through another region
A VPN may change which game server or region is available to you, but it does not guarantee access, suitable matchmaking, or better performance. Game and platform rules, regional availability, and provider features vary. Check the applicable terms rather than using a VPN to evade regional pricing or access controls.
When is no VPN the better choice?
For a stable connection that already reaches the intended game server efficiently, playing without a VPN is usually the latency-first default. A VPN inserts another network and provider into the path, so it can add delay, instability, or a new point of failure. Keep it off if testing shows no meaningful benefit and you do not need its privacy or public-network protections.

A speed-test result by itself is not a verdict on gameplay: it does not establish the route quality or stability of a particular match. Consider in-game ping, jitter or stability, packet loss and disconnects, server selection, your privacy needs, and setup compatibility together.
How to compare VPN and no VPN fairly
- Choose a consistent baseline. Use the same game, device, network, and game region or server. Note the in-game ping and any jitter, packet loss, or disconnects while the VPN is off.
- Choose a plausible VPN endpoint. Prefer an endpoint with a reasonable route to the game server; the endpoint nearest to you is not automatically the best option.
- Repeat under similar conditions. Turn the VPN on and compare the same game and server at a similar time. If possible, repeat the comparison so a temporary change in congestion does not decide the result.
- Keep it on only for a demonstrated reason. Use it if the real match experience meets your needs or if its privacy value is worth any performance cost. Turn it off if it makes play worse and you do not need the protection.
The reviewed sources do not establish a controlled, general performance result across VPN providers, games, ISPs, and locations. The USENIX Security Symposium’s 2024 paper, “Understanding VPN Provider Switching: An Empirical Study of User Reviews”, identified gaming-related themes in eight reviews. That is a qualitative count within the study, not a population statistic or a test of gaming ping.

What about consoles and split tunneling?
Consoles without a native VPN app
A router with VPN client support can route console traffic through a VPN. Setup and compatibility depend on the router, its firmware, VPN protocol, and service. Verify those details for your equipment; no particular model or configuration is established here.
Routing only the game through the VPN
Mozilla says its app can exclude selected games from VPN routing while keeping other device traffic protected by the VPN. This is one provider’s feature, and availability depends on its app and platform. Check the current app options for your device before relying on it.
