Start with the games you play, your monitor’s resolution and refresh rate, and the frame rate and image settings you want. Then compare CPUs and graphics cards using results for those games—not just model names or headline specifications. If you’re upgrading an existing PC, check motherboard and BIOS support, memory, card fit, power connections, and cooling before ordering.

Set your gaming target before comparing parts

Write down the games you care about, your monitor resolution and refresh rate, and the image settings you expect to use. Include streaming, video editing, or other demanding tasks if they matter. These details determine which benchmarks are relevant and help prevent paying for performance you will not use.

  • Games and workloads: List the titles and non-gaming tasks the PC must handle.
  • Resolution and refresh rate: Note whether you play at 1080p, 1440p, or 4K and the monitor’s refresh rate.
  • Desired experience: Set a realistic frame-rate range and image-quality target for those games.
  • Upgrade scope: Decide whether you are replacing one part or are willing to replace supporting components too.

Intel recommends looking for benchmarks that mirror how you plan to use the PC, including frame rates in the games you intend to play. Its guide also notes that the GPU and RAM affect results, so a CPU score from a different system may not predict your experience. Intel’s gaming CPU guide explains this workload-first approach.

How to compare gaming CPUs

Use game-specific benchmarks

Compare processors using the same games, settings, and test conditions. Record the rest of each test system, especially the graphics card and memory, because those components can change the results. A benchmark in a game you never play is less useful than a comparable result in one you do.

Intel’s official guide to choosing a gaming CPU suggests searching for a specific game alongside the processor model and evaluating metrics such as FPS. It also cautions that higher-resolution gaming and higher frame-rate targets can change the performance demands across the system.

Consider more than core count or clock speed

Core count, clock speed, cache, and price are specifications to consider, but none is a substitute for relevant benchmark results. First establish how the processor performs in your games and other workloads; then weigh its features and cost against the alternatives.

For an upgrade, verify CPU and motherboard support

Check the exact processor against the motherboard manufacturer’s CPU support list, including the minimum BIOS version required. AMD warns that a motherboard may need a BIOS update to support a newer Ryzen desktop CPU, and that a system can fail to boot if the installed processor is not supported by its firmware. Its BIOS update guidance, last updated August 12, 2026, directs users to the system or motherboard maker’s website and instructions.

How to compare gaming GPUs

Compare performance at your target resolution

Use results for the games you play at the resolution and settings you plan to use. Compare the competing cards under the same conditions, and weigh frame rate against purchase price at the time you shop. A model name or generation label alone does not establish which card offers better value.

AMD’s Radeon and GeForce comparison page groups guidance by 1080p, 1440p, and 4K. The factors it highlights vary by resolution: its 1080p section emphasizes gaming performance, available technologies, and performance per dollar; 1440p adds performance per dollar; and 4K highlights video memory, compute resources, display I/O, and gaming or upscaling technologies. These are AMD’s recommendations, not independent conclusions.

Compare VRAM in context

VRAM capacity is useful to record, but it is not a performance score or a universal predictor of how well a card will run a game. AMD’s comparison page lists the Radeon RX 9070 XT with 16 GB of GDDR6; that specification alone does not establish how fast it is versus another card.

AMD’s VRAM guide reports a peak of 11.7 GB used in its June 28, 2023, 4K maximum-settings tests across a named set of games. AMD used a Ryzen 9 7900X, 32 GB DDR5-4800, Windows 10 Pro, and an RX 6950 XT. That is a result for the stated test set and configuration, not a minimum VRAM requirement for all 4K games.

The same AMD page documents one comparison in Far Cry 6 at native 1440p, Ultra settings, and high ray tracing: an RX 6750 XT with 12 GB and an RTX 4060 Ti with 8 GB, tested with a Ryzen 9 7950X3D, 32 GB DDR5-5200, and Windows 11 Pro. It is evidence about that specific game and setup, not a general verdict about every card or title.

Check features, outputs, and test methodology

Alongside frame rates and price, note the card’s memory capacity, display outputs, and the rendering, ray-tracing, or upscaling features you expect to use. Read how a comparison was produced: AMD says its results are generated and verified in its internal labs and warns that results can vary and its page may contain inaccuracies or omissions. Treat them as manufacturer comparisons, not independent rankings.

Check upgrade compatibility before you buy

CPU, motherboard, and BIOS

Confirm that the exact CPU is listed for the exact motherboard and identify the required BIOS version. Follow the board maker’s update instructions; do not assume a board will ship with the necessary firmware.

Memory kit and settings

Check the motherboard’s memory support information for the kit’s capacity, speed, timing, voltage, and features. AMD recommends consulting the board’s qualified vendor list, using modules sold together as a matched kit, and following the manual’s recommended slots and memory profile. Graphics card, case, and power supply

Look up the exact graphics card’s length, thickness, power connectors, and manufacturer power recommendations. Compare its dimensions with the case’s available clearance and its power requirements with the installed PSU’s capacity and connectors. Check that the card has a connection your monitor can use. These requirements vary by model; there is no single clearance or wattage figure that fits every upgrade.

Cooling and mounting

Match the cooler to the processor’s specifications and confirm that its mounting hardware fits the motherboard and case. AMD’s troubleshooting guidance recommends using a cooling solution rated for the processor’s default TDP specification and mounting it correctly.

Game compatibility

Check the game publisher’s requirements for the titles you intend to play. AMD’s documentation for Game Explorer and Upgrade Advisor says its compatibility view applies to Steam games with available compatibility information and directs users to publishers for non-Steam compatibility. AMD’s Upgrade Advisor article also describes upgrade suggestions and Amazon listing behavior in that tool; it does not establish that every current model is available there.
