In a quiet room, an open-back model can make the presentation feel airier and more spacious; in a noisy or shared room, closed-back headphones or a closed-back gaming headset are usually the more practical choice. Choose a headset if you need an integrated microphone, and compare comfort, connection, and platform support separately from sound.
Start with your room, not the game genre
Open-world games often reward an immersive presentation, but the room you play in can matter more than the genre. Open-back designs let sound and air pass through the ear cups. That can feel less enclosed and help with airflow, but it also lets outside noise in and game audio out. Closed-back models generally provide better isolation and limit leakage, which can be useful around other people or in a noisy space. Corsair’s gaming-audio guidance and RTINGS’ overview both describe these trade-offs.
Choose open-back for a quiet, private setup
If you play alone in a quiet room and value an airy presentation, consider open-back headphones or an open-back gaming headset. Airflow may also help reduce heat buildup over a long session. These are tendencies, not guarantees: fit, weight, clamping force, ear pads, and the particular model still affect comfort.
Choose closed-back when isolation matters
If people nearby need quiet, or you need to hear less of your surroundings, closed-back headphones or a closed-back gaming headset are the safer starting point. They generally isolate better and leak less sound, though the amount varies by model. For shared spaces, this practical difference may outweigh any preference for a more open presentation.

Soundstage can support immersion, but it is not guaranteed
Soundstage is the perceived width and depth of audio. Some players prefer the more spacious impression they associate with open-back headphones for atmospheric, single-player games. However, open-back construction does not guarantee a wider or more convincing soundstage: the model’s tuning and design, as well as your own preferences, matter. RTINGS cautions that headphone type alone cannot predict how a particular model will sound. Neither category universally wins at spatial audio.
Think of openness as one factor to try, not a promise that game environments will sound more realistic. If possible, compare the specific models you are considering with familiar game audio and at a comfortable listening level.

The main headset advantage is an integrated microphone
A gaming headset includes a microphone, often in a boom-mic format; ordinary headphones may need a separate microphone for voice chat. That convenience can make a headset the simpler choice for multiplayer sessions, even if you mainly play open-world games. If you already own a microphone or do not use voice chat, regular headphones remain an option.
Do not assume the gaming label means better sound. Compare the microphone, comfort, connection, and platform support as separate features. Check whether the chosen model works with your PC or console over the connection you intend to use, and whether that connection limits any features you care about.

Check the exact model before buying
For a concrete open-back example, Sony Canada lists the INZONE H6 Air wired open-back gaming headset (MDR-G600/B) at approximately 199 g, with an RPG/Adventure EQ tuned by PlayStation sound engineers. Those are manufacturer-listed details, not an independent assessment of its sound or comfort. The listing is Canadian, so check local availability, price, and compatibility before treating it as an option where you live.
For any model, confirm the intended platform, wired or wireless preference, required ports, and whether the connection supports the features you want. Compare current local prices and stock for the exact alternatives; there is no universal price advantage for either category.
