Splatoon 3 is the closest colorful online alternative to Ninjala on Nintendo Switch, but it replaces close-combat action with ink-based shooting and requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership for online features. For a free-to-play battle royale, consider Fortnite; for a cartoon-styled fighter, try Brawlhalla. None is an exact substitute for Ninjala’s mix of arena combat and battle royale.

Why these games are—and are not—like Ninjala

Ninjala is a free-to-play Nintendo Switch game GungHo describes as “Ninja Gum Battle Action.” Its official game page lists one to eight players overall and two to eight online; the page does not state a year for those player-count specifications. Standard battles take place online and include team battles and battle royale. GungHo’s Ninjala site

The key distinction is how the fighting feels. Ninjala centers on close-combat arena action. Splatoon 3 and Fortnite are shooters, while Brawlhalla is a platform fighter. GungHo CEO Kazuki Morishita made a similar distinction in a June 2020 interview: “Splatoon’s more a shooting game, and this is more close combat – it is team battles with 4 players on each side, but there’s also battle royale which is a free-for-all.” Those comments describe the game’s launch-period design distinction, not current service conditions. Choose by what you want to keep

Choose Splatoon 3 if vivid team matches matter more than preserving Ninjala’s close-combat mechanics. Nintendo states that Splatoon 3 online features require a Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Splatoon 3 official site

A free-to-play battle royale

Fortnite is the more relevant option if battle royale is the feature you want to retain and you are comfortable switching to shooter combat. A 2026 GamesRadar+ guide describes it as a colorful, cross-platform battle royale and a free Switch game; that does not establish availability in every region or on every platform, so check the current listing where you play. A cartoon fighter

Brawlhalla is the distant alternative if you want a free, cartoon-styled fighter rather than a shooter. Its platform-fighting format is a more substantial change from Ninjala’s arena action. GamesRadar+ includes it among free Switch-game options; verify current platform and regional availability before downloading. GamesRadar+ guide

How Ninjala’s online access and purchases compare

Ninjala’s base download is free-to-play, and GungHo says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required for online play. That is a meaningful access difference from Splatoon 3, whose online features require the membership; do not assume Fortnite or Brawlhalla share Ninjala’s terms. Ninjala official site Splatoon 3 official site

GungHo’s FAQ says Ninjala’s Story Packs can be purchased separately for single-player story content, and avatar items change appearance only, not battle performance. Optional purchases and cosmetics therefore should not be mistaken for required combat upgrades. Ninjala FAQ

Playing with friends in Ninjala

If your reason for looking elsewhere is simply to play with friends, Ninjala’s official manual describes room battles, where players can create rooms, invite friends, and use a visual lobby. Standard battles are played over the internet and offer customizable rules, matching methods, and stages. Ninjala: Play with Others manual

What player counts can tell you

GungHo lists one to eight players overall and two to eight online for Ninjala. The available sources do not provide independently comparable current population figures for Ninjala, Splatoon 3, Fortnite, or Brawlhalla, so those figures cannot establish which game has the busiest matchmaking, shortest queues, or strongest regional activity.
