Yes—a Galaxy Watch can handle several tasks when your phone is not nearby, but it is not automatically a fully independent phone. What works depends on the watch model, whether it has LTE, how it was set up, and your country and carrier. Using a watch away from your phone is also different from setting it up without pairing a phone at all.
What can your Galaxy Watch do without a phone nearby?
1. Show the time and run basic local functions
A Galaxy Watch can provide basic functions such as showing the time and date without smartphone pairing, according to Samsung Germany’s standalone-setup guidance. This is a limited-use setup, not evidence that every model or feature works independently.
2. Track some fitness and activity data
Samsung lists fitness and activity functions among the basic uses available in its described unpaired setup. The watch may record data locally, but that does not guarantee every metric, health feature, or history view will be available without setup, pairing, or syncing. In that setup, Samsung says some supported health features, including ECG and blood pressure, are unavailable.

Samsung’s standalone guidance includes music or media control, and its Wear OS support describes music apps and Bluetooth headphone pairing. For listening without a phone, the audio must be stored on the watch or otherwise available to it; app support and offline playback vary. 4. Use GPS for location-related functions
Galaxy Watch6 specifications list GPS, which can provide location data without relying on a nearby phone. That specification alone does not establish that every model or app can record an offline route, display maps, or save a run in the same way. Check the behavior of your exact watch and activity app before relying on it for a phone-free route.
5. Make calls and receive messages with a supported LTE setup
An LTE Galaxy Watch may handle calls and messages away from a phone, but only when the exact model and local carrier support the service and the required plan is active. Samsung’s Watch6 specifications identify standalone LTE connectivity for the Galaxy Watch6 LTE and Galaxy Watch6 Classic LTE versions, while cautioning that carrier support varies. Can I use my Galaxy Watch without a phone?
Yes, for some functions. Basic local tasks and some activity or media features can work without a phone nearby. Services that rely on phone pairing, an account, internet access, or a cellular connection may not. A Bluetooth model does not gain cellular calling simply because it is away from its paired phone; LTE is the relevant model variant for cellular service.
Samsung Canada says Wear OS Galaxy Watches, including Watch4 and later, are designed to be set up with Galaxy Wearable on a compatible phone. Samsung’s U.S. guidance says Watch4 and Watch5 series require a compatible Android phone for setup, and describes standalone setup in that context for LTE models. A separate U.S. support page identifies Watch6 and Watch6 Classic LTE as capable of standalone setup. Can I set it up without ever pairing a phone?
That is a separate question from leaving a paired phone at home. Some Samsung guidance describes basic standalone use, but setup without a phone can leave important functions unavailable. Samsung Germany lists eSIM setup on LTE models, phone notifications, Google account sign-in for the Play Store on Wear OS, and some health features among the limitations of its described unpaired setup. This differs from pairing and activating an LTE watch through a supported phone-and-carrier process.
For example, Samsung Canada says Galaxy Watch7 LTE models sold there are activated as companion connected devices with a main phone/data plan and cannot be activated as standalone devices. How to check before leaving your phone behind
- Identify the exact model and version. Check whether it is Bluetooth or LTE; a product family name alone may not tell you which cellular features it supports.
- Check setup requirements for your country. Follow the Samsung support page for your market and generation rather than assuming standalone setup is supported everywhere.
- Ask your carrier about activation. Confirm that it supports your watch model, offers the required plan, and permits the kind of standalone or companion service you need.
- Test the specific task. Try a call, message, activity recording, or offline audio playback with the phone out of range before depending on it.
