If you want the Steam Machine’s built-in light bar to react to sound, GabeCubeAura is the clearest documented option: its current project README lists Audio Sync for the integrated bar. SteamLED offers animations, colors, and game-linked lighting, but its README does not list audio sync. Audio Aura visualizes sound on a computer screen rather than controlling the Steam Machine’s light bar.

When GabeCubeAura is the better fit
Choose GabeCubeAura if your priority is sound-driven lighting on the Steam Machine itself. Its README says Audio Sync maps mixed system sound to the light bar locally and that audio is not recorded or saved. The plugin also distinguishes Audio Sync from Screen Sync: the latter maps screen colors to the bar rather than responding to system audio. GabeCubeAura README
The project documents a Decky Loader setup and a root flag because the Steam Machine exposes the light bar through root-owned valve-leds sysfs files. Treat those as the project’s stated implementation context, not a guarantee of behavior on every SteamOS release.
When SteamLED or Audio Aura makes more sense
Choose SteamLED for lighting choices, not documented audio reaction
SteamLED is relevant if you want motion effects, fixed colors, or colors tied to a supported game. Its README describes eight animation motions and a Now Playing mode covering 21 named games. It does not list audio-reactive input, so it should not be treated as an alternative for sound-reactive lighting on the bar unless its documentation changes. SteamLED README

Choose Audio Aura for an on-screen visualization
Audio Aura is a different kind of output: its Steam listing describes spectrum waves at the edge of the display and lists Windows 10/11 as requirements. The listing does not describe Steam Machine light-bar support, so it is an option for seeing audio-reactive graphics on screen, not for controlling the integrated bar. Will a plugin override Steam’s download or status lighting?
GabeCubeAura documents that Steam system activity retains priority: its README says hard system priority blocks plugin writes during startup, downloads, and repeated native LED activity. SteamLED’s current README does not establish how it handles native Steam LED events. A community discussion raises the question of whether it interferes with download-status lighting, but the thread does not answer it.
