Full Excel CONVERT Function Unit List: Every Supported Measurement Code
Excel’s CONVERT function supports codes for mass, distance, time, pressure, force, energy, power, magnetism, temperature, volume, area, information, and speed.
Excel’s CONVERT function accepts documented unit codes for 13 measurement groups, from mass and distance to information and speed. Enter the codes exactly as shown—capitalization matters—and convert only between units in the same group. The syntax is CONVERT(number,from_unit,to_unit): the value, its source unit, then its target unit.
How to use a CONVERT unit code
Put each unit code in quotation marks when supplying it as a text argument. For example, =CONVERT(1,"lbm","kg") converts one pound mass to kilograms and returns 0.4535924. The code lbm means pound mass; it is not the pound-force code lbf.
The lists below follow Microsoft’s documented CONVERT function reference. Where Microsoft gives alternatives, each listed spelling is accepted. Preserve case exactly, including in codes such as Nmi, Picapt, LTON, and Torr.

Prefixes for metric and binary units
Microsoft lists metric prefixes from yotta (Y, 1E+24) to yocto (y, 1E-24), and binary prefixes from yobi (Yi, 2^80) to kibi (ki, 2^10). Prefixes can be prepended to supported metric unit codes; this does not mean every unit accepts every prefix. In particular, using a binary prefix with a unit that does not support it returns #N/A. See Microsoft’s prefix and unit documentation for the documented prefix table.
Why CONVERT returns an error
#N/A: The unit code is unknown, the chosen unit does not support the binary prefix used, or the source and target units belong to different measurement groups.
#VALUE!: An argument has an incorrect data type.
For an area conversion, Microsoft’s example is =CONVERT(CONVERT(100,"ft","m"),"ft","m"), which returns 9.290304. It nests two length conversions to square the linear conversion factor; it is a specific example, not a general pattern for converting every area unit. For other area conversions, use the documented area codes as the source and target in the function.
Microsoft lists CONVERT for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, Excel 2021, Excel 2019, and Excel 2016, including Mac editions where specified in its compatibility information.
