The Fujitsu MB86E631 is an Interface Bridge system-on-chip announced in 2012 to control transcoder LSIs and other multimedia equipment. It combines a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 with ten interfaces; it is a bridge and controller, not a standalone video transcoder. Fujitsu designed it especially for advanced Wi-Fi TV tuners that send transcoded video to phones, tablets, and storage devices.
What is the Fujitsu MB86E631?
Fujitsu Semiconductor announced the MB86E631 on October 31, 2012. Its role was to connect and control components in multimedia equipment, including Fujitsu transcoder LSIs. In a Wi-Fi TV tuner design, the transcoder handles video encoding or conversion while the MB86E631 provides processing and the interfaces needed to coordinate the system.
Fujitsu’s launch release described a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 operating at greater than 500 MHz. A 2013 Fujitsu technical paper describes the processor in the companion transcoder-control LSI as running at 500 MHz or less. Those figures appear in different contemporary documents and should not be treated as a single confirmed clock specification for the MB86E631. The TS interface is pertinent to television and video-streaming equipment, while UART and I2C support communication with other system components. What was it designed to do?
The main target was an advanced Wi-Fi TV tuner that could send transcoded H.264 or MPEG-2 streams to smartphones, tablets, and storage devices. Fujitsu also identified video recorders, televisions with built-in recording, multi-tuner systems, and other products that needed control of numerous interfaces as applications.

Fujitsu offered reference boards pairing the bridge with its MB86M01, MB86M02, or MB86M03 transcoder LSIs, along with Linux and DLNA support. That combination provides useful historical context for the chip’s intended ecosystem, but it does not establish compatibility with current devices or software versions. Can you still buy the MB86E631?
Current stock and end-of-life status are unverified. Fujitsu’s 2012 announcement said sample quantities would be available in December 2012; that is a historical sampling schedule, not evidence of present-day availability. The available product information also does not establish a currently authorized distributor. Anyone sourcing the part should confirm its lifecycle status, authenticity, and supply terms directly with Fujitsu or a qualified semiconductor supplier rather than assuming it remains in production.

What to check before using it in a new design
The published information establishes the MB86E631’s intended role and interface list, but it is not enough on its own to qualify the chip for a current design. Before selecting it or a substitute, engineering teams would need to verify:
- Whether the required package, electrical details, pinout, and full interface specifications are documented and obtainable.
- Compatibility with the intended transcoder, tuner, and transport-stream architecture.
- Availability of supported software, drivers, Linux components, and development materials for the target build.
- Current supply, lifecycle status, and sourcing provenance.
- Power, cost, and integration trade-offs against a contemporary alternative.
A generic Cortex-A9 board is not a drop-in replacement: matching the processor family alone does not reproduce the MB86E631’s interfaces, transcoder integration, or system-level support.
