Start with the upscaler best supported by your graphics card: DLSS Super Resolution on GeForce RTX, AMD FSR Upscaling on supported Radeon RX hardware, or XeSS on Intel Arc. Then compare the options in the specific game you play; no one upscaler is the image-quality winner in every title. One naming note: AMD now calls its current ML-based upscaler FSR Upscaling; “FSR 4” is its former name.
At a glance
| Upscaler | Best starting point | Hardware eligibility | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| DLSS Super Resolution | GeForce RTX | RTX 20, 30, 40 and 50 Series | DLSS is a suite; frame-generation features have narrower GPU requirements. |
| AMD FSR Upscaling (formerly FSR 4) | Supported Radeon RX hardware | AMD lists RX 6000, 7000 and 9000 Series for current ML-based FSR Upscaling. | Native game support or a compatible AMD Software upgrade path is required. |
| XeSS | Intel Arc; also worth considering on other compatible GPUs | Arc-optimized implementation, plus a cross-vendor path for GPUs supporting Shader Model 6.4. | Cross-vendor support does not promise the same speed or image quality as the Arc-optimized path. |
What is the difference between FSR 4, DLSS 4 and XeSS?
All three aim to reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render, but they differ in hardware eligibility, implementation paths, associated features and how each game integrates them. Upscaling is the part that reconstructs the image; frame generation is a separate feature that creates additional displayed frames.
That distinction matters because a game can offer several switches with similar names but different effects. Turning on an upscaler changes how the game renders and reconstructs its image. Turning on frame generation changes the displayed frame stream as well, and has its own hardware requirements and trade-offs. Compare those decisions separately rather than treating a larger FPS counter as proof of better responsiveness or image quality.

AMD’s current terminology is AMD FSR Upscaling. AMD says it renamed FSR 4 to distinguish the upscaler from the broader FSR “Redstone” suite. In this comparison, “FSR 4” and “FSR Upscaling” refer to the same current ML-upscaling lineage, not two different options.

The name change does not mean every feature or version in the wider FSR suite is identical. Check the game’s menu and documentation for the exact supported feature and version. AMD’s GPUOpen SDK page identifies version 4.1.2; an October 2026 update added FSR Upscaling 4.1 support for Radeon RX 6000 Series discrete GPUs, selected Ryzen AI processors, and Vulkan feature parity with DirectX 12.
What does DLSS 4 include?
DLSS is a collection of technologies, not a single upscaling toggle. Super Resolution reconstructs the image; Frame Generation inserts generated frames; Multi Frame Generation inserts multiple generated frames on supported hardware. The DLSS family also includes Ray Reconstruction and DLAA, which serve different rendering purposes.
NVIDIA’s support matrix lists DLSS Super Resolution on GeForce RTX 20, 30, 40 and 50 Series. Frame Generation support is narrower, covering RTX 40 and RTX 50 Series, while the DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation feature described in NVIDIA’s cited material is specific to RTX 50 Series. So an RTX card that can use Super Resolution does not necessarily support every DLSS feature.

These are NVIDIA’s figures for its technology and hardware context, not a head-to-head result against AMD or Intel. NVIDIA’s later DLSS 4.5 material adds newer terminology, including Dynamic Multi Frame Generation; those later additions should not be confused with the feature split in this DLSS 4 comparison.
How is XeSS different?
Intel documents two XeSS implementation paths. One is optimized for Intel Arc graphics. The other is an HLSL-based cross-vendor implementation that can run on any GPU supporting Shader Model 6.4; Intel recommends DP4a or equivalent hardware acceleration.
This makes XeSS usable beyond Intel Arc at the API level, but “runs on” is not the same as “runs equally well.” The cross-vendor path and Arc-optimized path can have different performance characteristics, and the game’s integration still affects image quality. If a game offers XeSS on a non-Intel GPU, treat it as an option to compare in that game, not as a guarantee that its results will match Arc.
Which upscaler should you use with your graphics card?
Use the option with the strongest support in your GPU ecosystem as your first setting to try, then let the game’s actual image and stability guide the final choice.

| Your GPU | First option to try | Why | Check before enabling |
|---|---|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 20/30/40/50 | DLSS Super Resolution | NVIDIA lists Super Resolution support across these RTX generations. | Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation have narrower generation requirements. |
| Radeon RX 6000/7000/9000 | AMD FSR Upscaling | AMD documents current ML-based FSR Upscaling support across these Radeon families. | Confirm native integration or whether the game qualifies for AMD Software’s upgrade path. |
| Intel Arc | XeSS | Intel provides an Arc-optimized implementation. | Compare it with the game’s other supported options; no implementation wins every title. |
| Mixed, older or non-native hardware | The best-supported option in the game | XeSS has a cross-vendor path, and older FSR generations may support broader hardware than current ML-based FSR Upscaling. | Check the exact game version, feature and GPU requirements. |
This is a starting rule, not a reason to buy new hardware. If you already own a GPU, choose among the options the game supports on that system. A well-integrated alternative can look better than a nominally newer mode that produces distracting artifacts in that particular title.
Does FSR 4 work on my graphics card?
AMD’s current documentation lists ML-based FSR Upscaling on Radeon RX 6000, RX 7000 and RX 9000 Series graphics cards, and the October 2026 GPUOpen update records support for RX 6000 discrete GPUs in version 4.1.2. AMD also documents selected Ryzen AI processor support, but that does not establish support for every AMD processor with integrated graphics.
Availability also depends on the game and integration. Some games with FSR 3.1 or newer may be eligible for an AMD Software DLL replacement upgrade to ML-based FSR Upscaling, but this is conditional on documented game requirements. It is not a universal switch that makes every older game compatible. Check AMD’s current compatibility information and the specific game’s support before assuming the newer path is available.
Can I use DLSS on an AMD or Intel GPU?
DLSS Super Resolution is listed for GeForce RTX hardware, not AMD Radeon or Intel Arc GPUs. If your non-RTX GPU needs an upscaler, check whether the game offers AMD FSR or XeSS; XeSS specifically has a cross-vendor implementation for hardware supporting Shader Model 6.4.

There is no evidence-backed universal winner across FSR, DLSS and XeSS. Vendor descriptions identify useful quality dimensions—detail retention, temporal stability, ghosting, shimmer, particles and fine geometry—but they are not a shared, controlled comparison of all three options on identical hardware, in the same game, at the same resolution and preset.
Image reconstruction depends on more than the upscaler’s name. The game supplies information such as motion vectors and depth, and integration choices around camera jitter and UI handling affect what the reconstruction can do. A weak or mismatched implementation can produce a worse result than another option, even if that other option is older or less closely associated with your GPU.
When comparing in a game, look at the image while moving as well as while standing still. Watch thin geometry, foliage, particles, distant text and fine detail; check for ghosting behind moving objects, shimmer on edges, softness, and UI problems. If one mode is visibly unstable or distracting, switch to another supported option. These are practical things to inspect, not a claim that one vendor has a consistent flaw.

AMD says its current ML-based implementation is designed to improve temporal stability, preserve particle detail, reduce ghosting and improve fine detail compared with FSR 3.1. That is a vendor description of its intended improvement; it does not establish that FSR Upscaling beats DLSS or XeSS in every game. Similarly, the fact that Intel has an Arc-optimized path does not establish that it wins on all Arc titles.
How should you choose Quality, Balanced or Performance?
Start with Quality at 1080p or 1440p when preserving detail is the priority. Move to Balanced or Performance when you need more rendering headroom for your target frame rate or a demanding workload such as ray tracing, then check the image for losses you find unacceptable.
These labels describe scaling presets, not a promise of identical output across games. AMD documents Native AA, Quality, Balanced, Performance and optional Ultra Performance modes; the available choices and their implementation may differ by game. Motion-vector quality, depth data, camera jitter, UI handling and other integration details still matter, so a preset name alone cannot tell you exactly how the game will look.
At 4K, Balanced or Performance may be reasonable when native rendering or heavy ray tracing is too costly. Inspect thin objects, foliage, particles and distant text, especially during movement. If the image becomes too soft or unstable, return to Quality or test another supported upscaler before accepting the trade-off.
Do not confuse a lower-resolution input with frame generation. Upscaling reconstructs the image from a lower-resolution frame; frame generation inserts generated frames. A generated-frame mode can increase displayed FPS without making the underlying game simulation or input response equivalent to that higher native frame rate. Judge responsiveness and visual artifacts separately from the displayed FPS figure.

Use an upscaler to reduce the rendering resolution and reconstruct an image; consider frame generation separately if your hardware and game support it and you want more displayed frames. Frame generation does not replace adequate base rendering performance, and it has separate hardware eligibility and latency considerations.
For DLSS 4, the distinction is particularly important: Super Resolution is available on RTX 20–50, Frame Generation on RTX 40–50, and the cited Multi Frame Generation feature on RTX 50. Do not infer that an older RTX card can use Multi Frame Generation just because it can enable Super Resolution. Likewise, AMD’s published FSR Upscaling timings are not frame-generation timings and should not be used to predict NVIDIA or Intel performance.

NVIDIA’s “up to three additional frames” figure refers to its Blackwell/DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation description. More generated frames can raise the displayed output count, but that figure is not a claim about base render speed, latency, or image quality in a particular game. Check the game’s controls and your own priorities: a responsive baseline may matter more than a larger output number.
Can you update the upscaler without a game patch?
Sometimes, depending on the GPU vendor, game and integration. NVIDIA documents NVIDIA App updates that can apply newer DLSS models and overrides in supported games; AMD documents a DLL-replacement upgrade path for some games using FSR 3.1 or newer. Neither route is universal, so confirm that the game is supported and follow the applicable vendor’s instructions.

NVIDIA says its Transformer-model upgrades for Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA apply across RTX hardware, while Multi Frame Generation overrides remain tied to RTX 50 Series. The App’s ability to update a model does not remove the underlying hardware requirement for a feature. AMD’s DLL replacement likewise depends on the game meeting its documented integration requirements; it should not be assumed to work in any title with an older FSR option.
After an update or override, verify the game’s available settings and check the image for stability. A newer model or DLL is not a guarantee that every game will improve, and changing the game’s implementation can alter behavior. If the result is worse or the game has problems, return to the native game option or disable the override.
What performance figures are available?
The cited materials do not provide a shared benchmark that ranks all three technologies on matched hardware and settings. The available numeric examples are vendor-specific and should stay attached to their source and test context.
- AMD: Its 2026 published FSR Upscaling examples report approximately 3.0 ms at 2560 × 1440 and approximately 1.7 ms at 1920 × 1080 on a Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with Radeon 8060S. These are AMD’s timings on that hardware, not expected results for other GPUs or a comparison with DLSS and XeSS.
- NVIDIA: Its 2025 DLSS 4/Blackwell material says Multi Frame Generation can add up to three frames per traditionally rendered frame, with a frame-generation model that NVIDIA describes as 40% faster and using 30% less VRAM for that method. Those are NVIDIA’s figures for its stated method and context, not cross-vendor measurements.
Do not compare the AMD millisecond figures directly with NVIDIA’s frame-generation claims: they describe different things. A fair head-to-head ranking would require matched game versions, GPU classes, resolutions, presets and measurement methods. The available evidence does not establish that comparison.
What should you do if the picture looks wrong?
First determine whether the problem appears with upscaling itself or only after enabling frame generation. Change one setting at a time so you can identify whether the reconstruction mode, generated frames or a game-specific interaction is responsible.

- Check compatibility. Confirm that the game and GPU support the exact feature—not merely the broad DLSS, FSR or XeSS label. In particular, verify DLSS generation requirements and whether current ML-based FSR is supported natively or through an eligible upgrade path.
- Try a less aggressive preset. If Performance or Balanced looks too soft or unstable, try Quality. If you began with Quality but still see artifacts, compare another supported upscaler rather than assuming the preset alone is at fault.
- Inspect movement and interface elements. Look for ghosting, shimmer, lost particle detail, thin geometry that flickers, distant text that becomes unclear, or UI elements that do not remain clean.
- Separate frame generation from reconstruction. If the image or responsiveness changes after turning on generated frames, disable that feature while leaving the upscaler unchanged, then compare again.
- Review updates and overrides. If you use a vendor-app model update or DLL replacement, check that the game is supported and that the override is intended for its integration. Disable it if it introduces instability or a worse image.
The best fallback is the clearest stable option that the game supports on your system. There is no general rule that the newest model, the vendor-native label or the highest displayed FPS should override what the game actually delivers.
How we picked the recommendations
The recommendations follow documented hardware eligibility and implementation paths from AMD, NVIDIA and Intel, then account for the role of game integration in image reconstruction. They do not rank the vendors using an invented or unmatched benchmark. The practical criteria are whether your GPU supports the feature, whether the game integrates it well, and whether the resulting image and responsiveness suit your priorities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will XeSS run on a non-Intel graphics card?
It can, if the GPU supports Shader Model 6.4 and the game includes Intel’s cross-vendor XeSS implementation. Intel recommends DP4a or equivalent hardware acceleration, and performance may differ from the Arc-optimized path.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does the FSR 4 name mean my older FSR game option is the same thing?
No. AMD’s current ML-based FSR Upscaling is a renamed lineage, while games can still offer earlier FSR versions. Check the exact feature or version listed by the game rather than relying on the word “FSR” alone.
What does DLAA do compared with DLSS Super Resolution?
DLAA is a DLSS-family feature, but it is not the same upscaling choice as Super Resolution. NVIDIA’s documentation groups DLAA with its DLSS model-update support; the game’s own description explains its available anti-aliasing choices.
Can NVIDIA App DLSS updates make Multi Frame Generation work on an RTX 40 card?
No. NVIDIA’s documented model upgrades for Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA span RTX hardware, but Multi Frame Generation overrides remain tied to RTX 50 Series. A model update does not remove a feature’s hardware requirement.
