Compare the total cost for your project and payment route, check the current membership and bidding limits, and confirm how funds and disputes are handled before choosing. The right fit also depends on whether you are hiring or freelancing, and whether suitable candidates are available for your specialty and region.

How fees differ by platform
Freelancer.com
Freelancer.com says employers can sign up, post a project, receive bids, browse portfolios, and discuss requirements without charge. For awarded fixed-price projects, its published general fee is 3% of project value or US$3, whichever is greater; hourly projects incur 3% on each payment. Freelancers generally pay 10% of fixed-price value or US$5, whichever is greater, and 10% of each hourly payment. The fee page also lists contest fees, exceptions, promotions, and paid membership plans that may offer benefits such as reduced fees, more bids, or premium features. See the current fee and membership details rather than assuming every project follows the general schedule.
Guru
Guru’s Terms of Service search excerpt says freelancer job fees vary by membership type, adds a 2.9% payment handling fee to the employer invoice, and allows transfer fees for some freelancer withdrawal methods. The same excerpt describes an arbitration service fee as the greater of US$25 and 5% of the amount the employer paid Guru for the applicable job. The full Terms page was not accessible, so current membership-specific fee rates and the complete context for those terms are not established here. Confirm them in Guru’s live Terms and pricing information before using those figures in a quote.

How payments and disputes work
Freelancer.com milestones and withdrawals
Freelancer.com describes milestone funding before work begins. The money remains in the account until release, refund, or handling under its User Agreement and applicable dispute process; funding a milestone is a platform payment mechanism, not a guarantee that a freelancer will receive payment in every circumstance. The User Agreement says an initial withdrawal of earned funds can be delayed for up to 15 days for security and fraud-prevention purposes. Later withdrawals may also be delayed when policy requires, and Freelancer.com may require identity verification before allowing a withdrawal.
Guru SafePay
Guru’s security guidance recommends that employers fund SafePay before work starts. It says payment is released after the employer reviews the work, and arbitration is available in a dispute only when SafePay funds are available. That makes the timing and amount of funding important: SafePay is subject to its funding and platform processes, not unconditional payment insurance. Review Guru’s SafePay guidance and current dispute terms for the job before beginning.

How to choose for your role
If you are hiring
- Calculate the platform and payment handling charges on a representative project, including any fixed-price minimums, payment method costs, currency conversion, and taxes.
- Search for candidates with the specific skill and regional availability you need. Compare relevant work samples and proposals, not just the number of profiles or bids.
- Agree on deliverables, review criteria, dates, and a payment schedule. Confirm what must be funded before work starts and the steps for releasing or disputing funds.
If you are freelancing
- Estimate net earnings after the job fee, membership cost, payment processing, transfer or withdrawal charges, and any currency or tax costs for your country.
- Check current membership benefits and bid limits against how many suitable projects you expect to pursue. A lower fee is only useful if the plan’s cost and limits make sense for your workload.
- Before accepting, confirm the client’s funded payment arrangement, approval process, and dispute route. On Freelancer.com, account for the possibility of withdrawal delays or identity checks.
A practical comparison before committing
- Set the scenario: use the actual project value, fixed-price or hourly structure, country, payment route, and whether you are the client or freelancer.
- Calculate all-in cost: apply each platform’s current fee schedule, including minimums, membership, payment handling, transfers, withdrawals, currency conversion, taxes, and optional upgrades where relevant.
- Check supply and limits: look for candidates or jobs in the exact specialty and region, and verify current membership and bidding limits.
- Read the payment terms: determine what is funded before work, when funds can be released, what triggers review, and what evidence or funds are required for a dispute.
- Choose on fit, not headline rates: compare the candidate or job options actually available to you alongside cost, payment timing, and the applicable dispute process.
