For U.S. freelancers, the fee depends more on how a client pays than on the provider’s name. As of October 4, 2026, PayPal invoice card payments are listed at 2.99% plus $0.49, while Stripe’s standard domestic online card rate is 2.9% plus $0.30. Bank options vary: PayPal invoice Pay by Bank is 1% capped at $10, and Stripe ACH Direct Debit is 0.8% capped at $5 under standard settlement timing. A direct bank transfer is a separate arrangement, and its fee depends on the banks and transfer method.

How much does PayPal charge freelancers?

PayPal’s U.S. merchant fee page, last updated October 1, 2026, lists distinct rates for invoice payments. PayPal defines an “invoicing transaction” as a goods-or-services payment request sent as an invoice and paid by the customer through that invoice. These invoice rates should not be confused with rates for other PayPal commercial transactions. See PayPal’s fee schedule.

Payment through a PayPal invoice Listed U.S. fee
Standard credit/debit card, Apple Pay, or other third-party wallet 2.99% plus $0.49 for a U.S.-dollar transaction
PayPal Checkout, Venmo, or Guest Checkout 3.49% plus $0.49 for a U.S.-dollar transaction
Pay Later 4.99% plus $0.49 for a U.S.-dollar transaction
Pay by Bank (ACH) 1%, capped at $10 per transaction

For international invoice transactions, PayPal adds 1.50% to the domestic invoicing rate. Other currencies have their own fixed fees. PayPal also lists separate service, risk, currency-conversion, and other fees that can apply in particular circumstances or to certain account types, so the invoice rate is not necessarily every cost an account could incur.

Is Stripe cheaper than PayPal for invoices?

For a U.S. domestic online card payment on standard pricing, Stripe lists 2.9% plus $0.30 per successful transaction. That is slightly lower than PayPal’s 2.99% plus $0.49 for an invoice card payment, but the exact difference depends on the invoice amount. Stripe’s rate is not a like-for-like quote for every PayPal invoice option: a client choosing PayPal Checkout, Venmo, Guest Checkout, or Pay Later is using a different PayPal payment method and fee tier.

Stripe lists additional charges when applicable: 0.5% for manually entered cards, 1.5% for international cards, and 1% when currency conversion is required. These are conditional additions, not fees that automatically apply to every transaction. Stripe says standard pricing has no setup or monthly fee; custom pricing can differ. Check Stripe’s current pricing page and your account terms.

Compare the same invoice amount

To calculate the listed fee for a domestic U.S.-dollar invoice, use the percentage and fixed charge together. For example, on an assumed $1,000 invoice paid by domestic online card, Stripe’s listed standard fee is 2.9% × $1,000 + $0.30 = $29.30. PayPal invoice card payment is 2.99% × $1,000 + $0.49 = $30.39. These are calculations from the listed rates, not provider-published example totals; they exclude any other account-specific charges.

What are the bank-payment options, and how long does ACH take?

“Bank payment” can mean a client-initiated bank transfer, a processor pulling funds from a client’s bank account, or a client paying through an instant bank-payment product. These are not interchangeable, and their costs and settlement timing differ.

Do bank transfers have fees?

There is no universal fee for a client sending money directly from their bank to a freelancer. “Bank transfer” might mean an ACH credit or a wire, for example; the sender’s bank, recipient’s bank, transfer direction, and domestic or international route can all affect fees and timing. Ask both parties to check their current bank schedules before calling a direct transfer free or the cheapest option.

Do not use a fee for funding a processor account as a proxy for a client paying you directly. Stripe’s U.S. financial-account funding details say ACH transfers used to fund that account have no fee and incoming Fedwire funding has a $2 fee. Those figures apply to funding that Stripe account, not to a client’s direct payment to a freelancer.

What is the cheapest way to get paid as a freelancer?

There is no single cheapest option for every invoice. Under the listed standard U.S. rates, a bank-payment method with a percentage fee and cap can cost less than card processing, but the method, cap, timing, and client’s access to it matter. A direct bank transfer might have no processor fee, but the parties’ bank charges are not established by the provider pricing pages and must be checked separately.
