Chromebook Plus users can create AI wallpapers from their own text prompts—or tap Inspire me for random prompt ideas. The feature, called “freeform wallpapers,” is built into ChromeOS and generates up to four images per generation.
What “freeform” means
“Freeform” refers to the open-ended prompt field: describe the wallpaper you want, and ChromeOS generates image options from that prompt. If you would rather start with an idea supplied by the interface, choose Inspire me to get random prompt options. Google introduced this prompt-based experience in its ChromeOS M138 Stable Channel announcement on July 24, 2025.
This is distinct from Google’s earlier introduction of generative AI wallpapers for Chromebook Plus in May 2024. The 2025 announcement describes the freeform prompt interface, not the first arrival of generative wallpapers on the platform. Google’s 2024 Chromebook Plus announcement provides that earlier context.

Choose Wallpaper, then find the Exclusive for Chromebook Plus section and select Create your own.

Choose a sample prompt or type your own. Select Inspire me for random prompt ideas, or select Create to generate images from the prompt you entered.

When the images appear, select one under Results to set it as your wallpaper.
Google’s instructions for creating a custom AI wallpaper also describe a page with sample prompts and recently used wallpapers. From there, you can create more images from a prior prompt, delete an image from Recently used, and open an About dialog to see prompt and date information.

Write a prompt that gives ChromeOS useful direction
Google recommends combining an action, a visual style, and details about the subject and scene. Begin with a verb such as “draw,” “generate,” or “create,” then say what should appear, what it is doing, and where it is. Name a style—for example, photorealistic, charcoal drawing, watercolor painting, or cartoon illustration.
For example, a prompt could ask ChromeOS to “draw a watercolor painting of a red fox curled up beside a lantern in a snowy forest.” It specifies an action, style, subject, activity, and setting, following Google’s prompt-writing guidance.

How many images you get—and what you can do next
Google says a freeform generation process creates up to four images. If none is right, change the prompt and create another set. You can also use the same prompt to create more images; Google says another four are added to the feed. “Up to four” describes the generation workflow, not a guarantee that every request returns four usable results.

The feature is available only on Chromebook Plus devices, according to Google’s Chromebook Help instructions and its M138 announcement. It is a built-in ChromeOS feature; a separate wallpaper app or accessory is not required.

Google’s June 2025 ChromeOS update says an internet connection is required and that results may vary. The availability and interface wording may change with ChromeOS updates.
