Yes. Uninstalling a permanently free Steam game removes its installed files from your device; it does not, by itself, remove the game’s access from your Steam account. Sign in to the account that has the game and look for it in your Library to install it again. The important exception is temporary access: a Free Weekend game is not permanently yours just because it appears in your Library. A game’s license, its downloaded files, and its save data are separate things, and each can have a different outcome.
Do I lose a free Steam game if I uninstall it?
No. Uninstalling a game and removing its license from your account are different actions. When you uninstall a game, Steam removes its local installation; if you have permanent access, the game remains associated with the account that owns or claimed it. You can download it again from that account’s Library.
This applies to games that Steam identifies as Free to Play and to qualifying Free to Keep promotions that you claimed before the offer ended. Valve describes Free to Play games as permanently free for customers to acquire. For a Free to Keep offer, Valve says the promotion lets a player permanently acquire a game license at no cost—but only if the player claims it during the promotion. See Valve’s Steamworks documentation on Free to Keep promotions.

What kind of free Steam access do I have?
Check how the game was offered, not just whether it cost nothing to install or still appears in your Library. The offer type determines whether your access is permanent.
| Access type | What it means | After uninstalling |
|---|---|---|
| Free to Play | The game is permanently free to acquire through Steam. Some games may offer optional paid content, but that does not change the basic access category. | Find it in the account’s Library and install it again. |
| Free to Keep | A time-limited promotion grants a permanent license to players who claim the game while the promotion is active. | If you claimed it, you can reinstall it from the account that claimed it. Merely seeing the offer is not enough. |
| Free Weekend | A limited-time opportunity to play a game, rather than a permanent giveaway. | The game may remain listed in the Library after the event, but continued play requires purchasing the full game. |
| Demo | A separate demo offering, not proof that you have a permanent license to the full game. | You can reinstall the demo if it remains available, but the demo’s presence does not grant the full game. |
The most easily misunderstood case is a Free Weekend. Valve notes that a title can remain in the Library after the event even though the temporary access has ended. That listing is not proof of ownership. The distinction is also why a Free to Keep game should be claimed during its offer window rather than assumed to be yours because you opened its store page or downloaded it.
For the precise promotion definitions, consult Valve’s documentation for Free to Keep offers and Free Weekends.
How do I reinstall a permanently free Steam game?
Use the Steam account that has the permanent access, then install the title from its Library. The usual process is:

- Sign in to Steam. Make sure you use the account on which you claimed the game or added the Free to Play game.
- Open your Library. Look for the title in the account’s game list. The exact layout and available controls can vary across Steam client views, so focus on finding the game in the Library rather than relying on one particular button label.
- Choose the game and install it. Steam downloads the local game files to the selected installation location. A permanent license does not mean those files remain on your device while the game is uninstalled.
- Wait for installation to finish, then launch the game. If it still will not launch, first check whether the problem is a missing installation, expired temporary access, or a game service that is no longer available. Those are different issues from whether a permanent license remains on the account.
If you want the game on another computer, sign in there with the same account and look in that account’s Library. The account association is what matters for access; the previously installed files on your first computer are not a substitute for signing in to the right account on the second.
Why is a free game missing from my Steam Library?
A missing Library entry does not automatically mean Steam erased a permanent license. First rule out account and Library-display issues, then check whether the game was temporary access rather than a claimed permanent offer.
- Check the account. You may be signed in to a different Steam account from the one that claimed the game. A license associated with one account does not establish that another account has it.
- Check Library filters. A filter or view can keep a game from appearing in the list you are currently looking at. Clear or adjust filters and search the Library.
- Check hidden games. Steam Support identifies hidden games as one reason a title may appear to be missing. Look for the title among hidden items and restore its visibility if appropriate.
- Reconsider the offer type. If you played during a Free Weekend, access may have expired. If the title was a Free to Keep offer, confirm that you actually claimed it before the promotion ended.
- Use Steam Support’s missing-game guidance. Valve’s Steam Support FAQ for games missing from a Library covers account, filtering, and hidden-game causes.
These checks help identify common explanations, but a game’s title alone cannot establish what is on an individual account. If the same account and Library checks do not resolve the issue, follow Steam Support’s account-specific guidance rather than assuming that uninstalling deleted the license.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes uninstalling a game delete my saves?
Not necessarily—but permanent access to a game does not guarantee that your progress or settings are preserved. Game saves, downloaded game files, and the account license are separate. Steam Cloud support varies by game and settings, and Valve says developers choose which files are integrated with Steam Cloud. Cloud synchronization can also be disabled, and many games do not store saves there.

Before uninstalling, check the game’s Steam store or Library information for Cloud support and consult the game’s own guidance about where it stores local saves. If the save matters, make a separate copy of it before removing the installation. Do not assume that reinstalling the game will restore every save automatically: that depends on whether the particular game stores the relevant data in Steam Cloud, whether syncing is enabled, and whether the save was successfully synchronized.
Valve’s Steam Cloud documentation explains how Cloud integration works and why coverage is not universal. Steam also offers a game-file backup feature, but Valve documents compatibility limits, and a backup of game files does not necessarily include save data. Treat a game backup and a separate save backup as different precautions; one is not a guarantee of the other.
What if a permanently free game is retired or delisted?
Removing a game from sale does not necessarily remove it from existing players’ Libraries. Valve says retired games remain in players’ Steam Libraries and can still be downloaded, installed, and launched. Its documentation on retiring a product makes that distinction between ending a product’s availability to new customers and its existing players’ access.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →That does not promise that every game will remain fully playable indefinitely. A title may depend on online servers or other services that can cease operating; a retained Library entry and downloadable files cannot guarantee that those functions will continue. So if a retired game is listed but cannot be played, distinguish the status of the license from the availability of the game’s required services.

Is uninstalling Steam the same as uninstalling a game?
No. Uninstalling one game removes that game’s local files. Removing the Steam application is a separate operation that can affect locally installed game content more broadly. Steam Support says uninstalling the Steam application can remove installed game content and describes preserving the steamapps folder or making backups before reinstalling Steam.
This concerns files stored on the computer, not the basic distinction between an account license and an installation. If you intend to remove Steam itself and want to preserve installed content, follow Valve’s instructions for uninstalling Steam before proceeding. Do not treat a folder copy as a substitute for checking that you can sign in to the account associated with your games.

When a game cannot be played after an uninstall, identify what is actually missing before taking action. The same symptom—“I can’t play it”—can have several causes:
- The game files are gone: install the game again from the Library on the account with permanent access.
- The game is absent from the Library: check the account, filters, and hidden games; then verify that the offer was permanent and claimed.
- The game appears but access has expired: determine whether it was a Free Weekend or another temporary offer. A lingering listing does not turn temporary access into a permanent license.
- The game launches but progress is missing: investigate the game’s Cloud support, sync settings, and local save location. License access does not restore saves by itself.
- The game is retired and will not function: distinguish retained account access from the continued availability of servers or other required services.
This diagnosis prevents an unnecessary repurchase when the issue is only an installation or Library-display problem—and avoids the opposite mistake of assuming a temporary trial is permanent because the title still appears in Steam.

What should I check before uninstalling?
If you may want to return to the game, a short check before uninstalling can prevent confusion later:
- Confirm that the game is Free to Play or that you claimed its Free to Keep offer, rather than relying on a Free Weekend listing.
- Make sure you know which Steam account has the game.
- Check the game’s Cloud support and synchronization settings if you care about progress.
- Make a separate copy of important local saves when the game’s save handling is unclear or Cloud coverage is absent.
- If you are removing Steam itself rather than one game, follow Steam Support’s steps for preserving local content.
For a permanently free game, the key point remains simple: uninstalling the local copy does not itself cancel the account’s permanent access. The checks above matter because access, files, saves, and online services are distinct—and a problem with one should not be mistaken for a loss of all the others.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I claim a Free to Keep game after the promotion ends?
No. The permanent license is for players who claimed the offer during its active window; seeing the promotion or visiting the store page is not the same as claiming it. If the offer has ended, check whether the title is separately available as Free to Play.
Recommended Free Tools
If I reinstall a game, will it restore my old settings too?
Not necessarily. Steam Cloud may sync selected settings or files when a game supports it, but developers choose what is included and synchronization can be disabled. For settings or saves that matter, check that game’s Cloud support and keep a separate local copy where appropriate.
Can a retired game stay in my Steam Library even if it no longer works?
Yes. Valve says retired games remain in existing players’ Libraries and can still be downloaded, installed, and launched. That does not guarantee that online servers or every feature a game depends on will continue operating.
Does uninstalling a Steam game remove its license from my account?
No. Uninstalling removes the local installation, while permanent access is tied to the account. A Free Weekend is the important exception to the assumption of permanent access: its Library listing can remain after play access expires.
