The best free signature generator depends on what you need: a downloadable image of a handwritten-style mark, or a service that handles signing documents. Canva and SignWell offer signature-making tools; SignWell, PandaDoc, and DocuSign also have document-signing offerings, but their free features and availability differ. Compare those two jobs separately before choosing.
First decide whether you need an image or a signing workflow
A signature image generator creates a visual mark—usually by drawing, typing, or uploading a signature—that you can place in a document. It does not necessarily send the document to other people or manage the signing process.
An e-signature service works with documents: it may let you send them for signatures and manage the resulting records. Some providers offer both kinds of tools, but a free signature maker does not automatically mean free document sending.
Compare the free options by what they do
| Tool | Signature input | Download or record | Document workflow and free limits | Geography or account context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canva signature generator | Draw or type a signature, according to Canva’s signature generator page. | Canva’s electronic-signature page lists PNG, JPG, and PDF downloads. It says background-free downloads and more fonts are Canva Pro features; check the current tool for the available free export options. | The generator makes a signature mark. Canva also describes electronic-signature functionality, but the cited pages do not establish a free document-sending allowance. | The cited pages do not state a geographic restriction or account requirement for the generator. |
| SignWell signature maker | Draw, type, or upload a signature, according to SignWell’s maker page. | The maker page says you can download the signature; it does not establish a specific file format. | The maker is separate from SignWell’s document-signing service. SignWell says its free plan includes three documents per month on its pricing page; check the page for the current cap. | The cited pages do not state a geographic restriction or account requirement for the maker. |
| PandaDoc free e-signature | The cited offer describes document e-signing, not a standalone signature-image generator. Input methods for making a reusable image are not stated. | PandaDoc says signers receive a digital certificate with signing information on its free e-signature page. | This is a document-signing workflow. PandaDoc’s 2026 comparison article discusses broader document-workflow features, but the cited free-offer page does not state a document cap. | The cited pages do not establish geographic availability or account requirements for the free offer. |
| DocuSign signature generator | Draw or type a signature using the browser tool described on DocuSign’s UK signature-generator page. | The cited page describes creating a signature; it does not specify downloadable formats or restrictions. | The page points readers to paid plans for managed e-signatures, so do not assume the free generator includes document sending. | The cited page is for the UK. Check whether the tool is available to you in your location. |
How to choose a signature image generator
- Choose input that suits you. Canva supports drawing or typing; SignWell supports drawing, typing, or uploading an existing signature. DocuSign’s UK page describes drawing or typing.
- Check the export you need. If your document workflow requires a particular file type or a transparent background, verify that the free tool currently supplies it. Canva lists PNG, JPG, and PDF downloads for its electronic-signature feature, while its page identifies background-free downloads as a Pro feature. The cited SignWell and DocuSign maker pages do not state formats.
- Keep the mark reusable only if that fits your workflow. An image can be placed in a document, but it does not provide the sending and management features of a signing service.
How to choose a free document-signing service
- Look for the workflow, not just the maker. Confirm that the offer covers sending documents for signature if that is what you need. SignWell’s maker is separate from its signing service; PandaDoc’s cited free offer concerns e-signatures, and DocuSign’s UK generator page directs users to paid plans for managed e-signatures.
- Check recurring limits before relying on a free plan. SignWell currently states three documents per month for its free plan. Plan details can change, so verify the limit on its pricing page when you sign up.
- Consider the record provided. PandaDoc says signers receive a digital certificate with signing information. That is a stated feature, not an independent assessment of whether the record is suitable for your particular transaction.
What free does—and does not—establish
Free access may apply to creating a signature image while document sending, export options, or other features have separate limits or paid tiers. The cited vendor pages do not establish independently tested ease of use, privacy performance, or legal suitability for particular documents.

Canva’s disclaimer says: “The user is responsible for ensuring that the generated signature meets the legal requirements for signing a binding document.” This is Canva’s statement about its tool, not a legal determination for a specific document or jurisdiction. For an important agreement, verify the requirements that apply to that document and location rather than treating a generator’s disclaimer as legal advice.
