To free space before a large PS4 or PS5 update, first check the console’s storage screen, then remove an unused game or app, clear unneeded content, or move compatible games to external storage. Deleting a game installation is different from deleting its saved data: protect saves before removing them. You do not need to reset the console just to make room.
What should you do first?
Check what is using storage before deleting anything. A large installed game may be the quickest way to reclaim space, but captures, apps, and other content can also contribute. The best choice depends on whether you need space immediately, want to keep a game installed, or want to protect saved data.
- Check storage. On PS5, open Settings > Storage. On PS4, use the console’s storage and saved-data management menus. Review which games, apps, captures, or other content take up the most room.
- Choose what to remove or move. An unused game or app is often the simplest target. If you want to keep a game without using internal space, consider compatible USB extended storage; the rules differ for PS4 and PS5 games.
- Keep saved data separate from installations. A game installation is not the same thing as its save files. Before deleting saved data, back up anything important using a supported USB or cloud workflow.
- Try the update again. Once you have freed space, retry the download or installation. If it still fails, use the troubleshooting steps below rather than immediately reinstalling system software.
PlayStation Support describes several ways to free storage for a new game, and says a deleted application can be downloaded again from the Library. That makes removing an unused installation a practical first step when you can redownload it later.
Use the storage screen as a decision aid, not just a number to chase. If one large game is taking up space and you have finished it, deleting its installation may solve the immediate problem with little effort. If you expect to play it again soon, a compatible USB drive may be more convenient. If several games repeatedly compete for the same limited internal space on PS5, permanent expansion may make more sense than repeated cleanup.

Before confirming any deletion, check what the console says you are removing. An installed application, a saved-data file, and a capture are different kinds of content. Removing an installation is usually reversible by downloading it again; removing a save can cost you progress if you do not have a backup. Avoid selecting saved data simply because it appears near a game in a management menu.
How do you free space on PS4?
On PS4, delete an unused application from the content launcher or Library, or move compatible PS4 games to USB extended storage. Keep saved data safe: deleting an application and deleting a save are separate actions.
Delete an unused PS4 game or app
- Highlight the game or application in the content launcher or Library.
- Press the OPTIONS button on the controller.
- Select Delete and confirm.
Deleting the application removes its installed game or app data, not necessarily the save files. PlayStation Support says deleted applications remain available to redownload from the Library. You may need to download the game again before playing, so choose something you are comfortable leaving uninstalled while the update completes.
If you are deciding among several games, start with one you no longer play or one you know you can redownload when needed. Removing an app you use every day may recover space, but it could create a second task after the update. Think about your internet connection and how soon you might want to play again: the Library makes a deleted application available to download again, but it does not keep the installation ready on the console.
Move PS4 games to USB extended storage
Compatible PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage, which can free console space without requiring you to uninstall the game permanently. Before using a drive, check PlayStation’s current external-storage requirements and compatibility guidance. A drive that looks suitable is not automatically supported.
Formatting a USB drive as extended storage erases its existing data. Back up or move anything you want to keep before formatting. PlayStation also warns against connecting extended storage through a USB hub. Use a direct connection to the console.
USB extended storage is the clearest alternative to deletion when you want to retain a PS4 game and keep it playable. It is removable and can be used for overflow, but it should not be confused with a backup of saved data. Treat the game files and your progress as separate things: check the save-data backup options independently before changing anything related to saves.

Before deleting saved data, back up important PS4 saves to a USB drive or use PlayStation Plus online storage. Do not delete save files just because a game installation is taking up space: saves and installations serve different purposes, and deleting a save can remove your progress.
If the goal is only to make room for an update, there is no need to remove save files as a first step. Look for an unused installation, app, or other content instead. If you choose to back up saves, use a supported USB or online-storage workflow and confirm that the important files are included before deleting any originals.

How do you free space on PS5?
On PS5, open Settings > Storage to review what is using space, then remove unneeded games or apps or move games to supported storage. PS5 games stored on USB extended storage cannot be played directly from that drive; copy them back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD first.
Review and remove PS5 content
- Open Settings > Storage.
- Review the storage categories and identify large games, apps, captures, or other content you no longer need.
- Use the storage-management controls to delete or move the selected games and apps.
- Keep save files in mind as a separate category. Back up important saved data before deleting it.
Removing a game you can redownload is often the quickest way to reclaim room. If you need to keep it installed, USB extended storage or a compatible M.2 SSD may be a better fit—but they do not work the same way.
When reviewing categories, focus on content you can identify and are comfortable removing. A capture may be worth keeping even if it is not a game; an old game may be easy to redownload but inconvenient if you want to play it immediately. Make one change at a time, then check the storage screen again. That lets you see whether the space you recovered is enough before moving on to another category.
Understand the PS5 USB-storage limitation
USB extended storage can hold PS5 games, but it is an archive location rather than a place to play those PS5 games directly. As PlayStation Support explains, to play a PS5 game from USB extended storage, copy its game data back to PS5 console storage. A compatible M.2 SSD can also store and play PS5 games.
PS4 games can be played directly from compatible USB extended storage. This difference matters when choosing where to move a game: a PS4 title can remain playable on the USB drive, while a PS5 title stored there must be copied back before you can launch it.
So, if you need the space only temporarily, USB extended storage can preserve the PS5 game files without keeping them on the console, but it will not make that title instantly playable from the drive. Allow for the copy-back step when deciding whether this approach suits an update-day cleanup. For a game you want available to play without moving it back, console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD is the relevant destination.

Back up PS5 saved data
Do not assume cloud storage is a replacement for installed game space. Use a supported PS5 cloud or USB backup workflow to protect saved data, and use game storage options to move or remove installations. PlayStation lists USB extended storage, M.2 SSD storage, cloud storage, and USB storage among its storage paths, but they do not all serve the same purpose.
Cloud storage belongs in the saved-data conversation, not as a way to run installed games or bypass the local space needed for game files. Before deleting saved data, verify that you have a suitable backup path for your console and that the saves you care about are covered. Do not assume that moving a game installation also moves or backs up its progress.
Should you delete a game or move it to external storage?
Delete an unused game for the fastest cleanup when you can download it again later. Move a game to compatible USB storage if you want to retain it without using as much console storage; remember that PS5 games must be copied back before play.

| Option | Best when | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Delete a game or app | You need space quickly and do not need the installation right now. | You may need to download it again to play. Protect saved data separately. |
| USB extended storage | You want to retain compatible games while freeing console storage. | PS4 games can run from it; PS5 games must be copied back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before play. |
| Compatible PS5 M.2 SSD | You need longer-term internal capacity for PS4 and PS5 games. | You must check PlayStation’s current compatibility requirements and install the latest system software before fitting a drive. |
The choice comes down to speed, data safety, playability, capacity, and convenience. Deleting an installation is simpler than installing hardware. USB storage is removable and useful for overflow, while an M.2 SSD is an internal expansion option for PS5. Do not buy or format a drive based only on its advertised capacity: check the console’s compatibility requirements first.
For a one-time shortage, use the least involved option that gives you enough room: remove an application you do not need today, then retry the update. For a game you want to keep, consider USB extended storage, bearing in mind that PS5 titles need to be copied back before play. If you regularly run out of room and want PS5 games to remain playable from an expansion, a compatible M.2 SSD is the more direct long-term option.
These choices differ in more than capacity. Deletion is fast, but it trades away an installed copy. USB storage is removable and retains game files, but PlayStation’s rules determine whether the game can be played directly from it. M.2 storage is internal and can support playing compatible PS4 and PS5 games, but it requires choosing a compatible drive and fitting it correctly. Neither cloud storage nor a save backup is a substitute for storage used by installed game data.
What should you know before using a USB drive?
PlayStation specifies a capacity range of 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum for compatible external USB storage. Not every USB drive is compatible, and extended storage should not be connected through a USB hub.
- Check compatibility first. Consult PlayStation’s current storage-solutions guidance for supported requirements.
- Back up the drive before formatting. Formatting it as extended storage erases existing data.
- Connect it directly. PlayStation warns that extended storage cannot be connected through a USB hub.
- Plan around the game type. PS4 games can be played from compatible USB extended storage; PS5 games stored there must be copied back before play.
- Keep saves distinct. USB extended game storage does not make cloud storage a substitute for installed game space, and saved-data backups are a separate concern.
Those capacity boundaries apply to compatible external USB storage, not as a guarantee that every drive within the range will work. Check PlayStation’s current requirements before buying or formatting anything. If the drive already contains files, do not start formatting until you have moved or backed up the data you need elsewhere; formatting erases the drive’s existing data.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Avoid routing the drive through a hub. PlayStation warns that extended storage cannot be connected that way, so connect it directly to the console. Also decide whether you want the drive for PS4 games you will play from USB, PS5 games you will store there and copy back later, or general overflow. That use case matters as much as the drive’s headline capacity.
When does a PS5 M.2 SSD make sense?
A compatible M.2 SSD is worth considering if storage keeps filling up and you want a longer-term PS5 expansion for PS4 and PS5 games. Unlike USB extended storage, a compatible M.2 SSD can store and play PS5 games. Before installing one, verify PlayStation’s current requirements and install the latest system software.
This is not usually the first move for a single update that needs space. Deleting an unused game or moving content to an already-compatible drive is quicker than choosing and fitting new hardware. Treat an M.2 SSD as a capacity solution for a recurring problem, not a reason to reset the console or delete saved data.
Do not choose an M.2 drive from its label alone. Compatibility requirements can determine whether a drive is suitable, and PlayStation’s requirements should be checked before purchase and installation. The installation process is also a step beyond routine cleanup, so it is most appropriate when you need additional capacity over time rather than just enough room for one update.

In short, USB extended storage is the removable overflow option, while M.2 is a permanent internal expansion path for PS5. Both can help with capacity, but their convenience differs: USB can store PS5 games that must be copied back before play, whereas a compatible M.2 SSD can store and play them. Neither option removes the need to protect saved data separately.
Why might an update still fail after you free space?
If the game or update still fails after cleanup, try basic recovery steps in order: restart the console, check the USB connection if you are using external storage, restore licenses, and confirm that system software is current. If needed, delete and redownload the game. On PS4, rebuilding the database is another troubleshooting option where applicable.
Do not reinstall system software simply to reclaim storage. PlayStation states that reinstalling PS4 system software deletes all data on the console. If a genuine update or repair problem requires Safe Mode, back up important data first and follow PlayStation’s official update or repair instructions.
Keep capacity troubleshooting separate from repair troubleshooting. If you have removed or moved content and the console still reports a problem, restarting and checking the connection are less destructive first checks than wiping data. Restoring licenses, checking system software, or redownloading the affected game are further options if the issue persists. Rebuilding the database applies to PS4 where applicable; use the console’s official instructions rather than treating it as a routine storage-cleanup action.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReinstalling system software is particularly unsuitable as a way to get extra room. PlayStation warns that reinstalling PS4 system software deletes all console data. If Safe Mode is genuinely needed to address an update or repair issue, back up important content first and follow PlayStation’s official procedure. Do not take a destructive recovery step simply because a large download exposed a storage shortage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can you avoid running out of space before the next update?
On PS5, PlayStation says you can set PS4 games and future patches to install to a connected USB drive. That can reserve internal SSD space for PS5 games, which cannot be played directly from USB extended storage. If you use this option, keep the game-type limitation in mind: PS4 games can run from compatible USB extended storage, but PS5 games must be copied back before play.
For either console, check storage before a large download rather than waiting for an installation error. Keep only games and apps you currently need installed, review content that is taking up space, and maintain a separate backup plan for saved data. This avoids using destructive steps—especially deleting saves or reinstalling system software—to solve a routine capacity problem.
On PS5, directing PS4 games and future patches to a connected USB drive can help preserve internal SSD capacity for PS5 titles. It is a prevention measure, not a way to play PS5 games directly from USB. Keep the drive connected directly rather than through a hub, and remember that compatibility and formatting requirements still apply.

The best solution is the one that gives you room without risking your progress or adding a step you will find inconvenient later.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much free space does a PS4 or PS5 update need?
There is no single update-space figure that applies to every game and console. Check the console’s storage screen and the space requirement shown for the specific download; if the installation still cannot proceed after cleanup, follow the console’s troubleshooting guidance.
Can I use the same external drive for PS4 and PS5 games?
PlayStation supports USB extended storage for compatible PS4 and PS5 game data, but how you use the games differs. PS4 games can be played from the drive, while PS5 games stored there need to be copied back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before play.
Will I lose my game progress if I delete a game?
Deleting an application is not the same as deleting saved data, so removing the installation does not automatically mean you should remove its saves. Back up important saves before deleting saved-data files, using the supported USB or cloud option for your console.
Recommended Free Tools
Can cloud storage install or run my games instead of the console?
No. In this context, cloud storage is relevant to saved-data backup, not a replacement for the local space needed by installed game files. Use console storage, compatible USB extended storage, or a compatible PS5 M.2 SSD for game installations.
How do I free up space on my PS4 for an update?
Check the console’s storage and saved-data management menus, then highlight an unused game or app in the content launcher or Library, press OPTIONS, and select Delete. You can also move compatible PS4 games to USB extended storage, where they can be played directly. Protect saved data separately.
Why does my PS5 say there isn’t enough storage?
The console may have less available room than the game or update needs. Open Settings > Storage and review games, apps, captures, and other content, then remove or move something you do not need. There is no single space requirement that applies to every update.
Can I move PS5 games to an external hard drive and play them there?
You can store PS5 games on compatible USB extended storage, but you cannot play them directly from that drive. Copy the game data back to PS5 console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before playing.
What can I delete before a huge game update?
Start with an unused game or app, or content you have decided you no longer need. Check the storage categories first, and do not delete saved-data files unless that is your intention and you have backed up important saves.
Do I need an SSD or external hard drive for PS5 storage?
Not necessarily for a one-time shortage: deleting an unused game may be quickest. USB extended storage is useful for overflow, but PS5 games stored there must be copied back before play. A compatible M.2 SSD is a longer-term internal expansion option that can store and play PS5 games. Check PlayStation’s current requirements before buying.
Does formatting a USB drive for extended storage erase what is already on it?
Yes. Formatting the drive as extended storage erases its existing data. Move or back up anything important first, and connect the drive directly to the console rather than through a USB hub.
The Bottom Line
Check storage first, then remove an unused installation or move compatible games to supported storage. Remember that PS4 games can run from USB extended storage, while PS5 games stored there must be copied back before play. Keep saved data backed up separately, and reserve M.2 expansion or recovery steps for the situations they actually solve.
