The title alone does not identify one particular calculator, so the useful first step is to match the tool to the calculation you need.
What a microwave impedance calculator can calculate
“Impedance calculator” is a broad label. Some tools estimate a transmission line’s impedance and loss from its geometry and substrate; others show how a complex load relates to a reference impedance and help you explore matching. A calculator’s results depend on the inputs and model it supports, so check that its task matches yours.
Transmission-line modeling
A transmission-line calculator typically uses line dimensions, material properties and frequency to estimate electrical characteristics. Rogers describes its MWI-2017 tool as calculating transmission-line impedance and loss, with outputs including effective dielectric constant, signal wavelength, skin depth, electrical length at a selected frequency and propagation delay. Rogers’ description is in a 2018 article, and it says account setup is required; that historical description does not confirm current download availability. Rogers’ MWI-2017 article.
Smith charts and matching
A Smith-chart calculator is more focused on relationships between a load and a reference impedance. AntenX describes tools for entering a reference impedance and complex load, then calculating reflection coefficient and VSWR. With its notation, the reflection coefficient is Γ=(Z−Z₀)/(Z+Z₀), and VSWR=(1+|Γ|)/(1−|Γ|), where Z is the load impedance, Z₀ is the reference impedance, and |Γ| is the magnitude of the reflection coefficient. The inverse relation is Z=Z₀(1+Γ)/(1−Γ). These equations describe the calculations; a chart or calculator does not by itself demonstrate how a finished circuit performs. AntenX calculators.

How the available tools differ
The tools described by their publishers are not interchangeable. Use their stated features as a starting point, and confirm current access terms and supported inputs on the relevant provider’s page.
| Tool | Described purpose and features | Access and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Rogers MWI-2017 | Transmission-line impedance and loss, plus material and propagation outputs such as effective dielectric constant and delay. | Rogers’ 2018 description says free download with account setup; present availability is not established by that article. Source. |
| TX-LINE | Transmission-line structure analysis and synthesis. | Microwave Journal describes it as free and Windows-based in an older design-tools article; that source is not a current availability check. Source. |
| Qorvo MatchCalc | RF/microwave matching with tunable passive components, file display, tuning and optimization, and reporting features. | Microwave Journal’s article dated 2017-10-30 describes it as a free download; current availability and vendor program details are not established there. Source. |
| CalculatorX interactive Smith-chart calculator | Impedance/reflection conversions, lumped- or distributed-element matching, transmission-line calculations and Touchstone S-parameter import. | The page displays version 1.6.3 and an internal review date of 2026-08-09. Choose by the work you need to do
- For line dimensions and substrate assumptions: look for a transmission-line tool that accepts the geometry, material and frequency inputs relevant to your design. Check which line types and material properties it models.
- For reflection or VSWR: use a Smith-chart or impedance/reflection calculator that accepts complex load impedance and the reference impedance you intend to use.
- For a matching network: check whether the tool supports the elements and workflow you need. CalculatorX lists lumped and distributed matching, while Microwave Journal’s 2017 MatchCalc article describes tunable passive components and tuning/optimization.
- For measured data: if you need to work from S-parameters, verify that the tool can import your file format. CalculatorX lists Touchstone import; the cited descriptions of the other tools do not establish comparable import support.
- For access and compatibility: check whether the tool runs in a browser or requires an installation, which operating systems it supports, and whether account setup or registration is needed. The cited descriptions identify TX-LINE as Windows-based and Rogers MWI-2017 as requiring account setup, but do not confirm their current availability.
Use calculated results as design aids, not proof
The cited tool descriptions explain calculations and features; they do not establish that a calculator replaces measurement or validates a finished RF design. Treat its results as model-based calculations or estimates for the inputs and assumptions you supplied. For background on microwave theory, AntenX lists D. M. Pozar’s Microwave Engineering among its references.
