If you liked Fragments for its first-person hotel exploration, film-reel and camera reveals, puzzles, and stealth, start with Unanswered. Its UV flashlight exposes hidden clues, making it the closest match for discovering information that ordinary sight misses. For environmental puzzles, try We Went Back; for a short investigation, consider Playable Archive. All three are free on Steam according to the listings reviewed for this guide, but none is documented as reproducing Fragments‘ exact camera mechanic.
This means Campus ADN’s Fragments, released October 26, 2026—not the separate Fragments of Dread – False Haven. The games below are ranked by how well their mechanics and mood fit a player seeking exploration, hidden information, and unease, not by a claim of tested superiority. Store availability and regional pricing can change; the research checkpoint for listings was October 30, 2026.

| Poppy Playtime | Mascot horror and toy-factory puzzles | GrabPack puzzles; free base covers Chapter 1 | Free Chapter 1; later chapters are separate paid DLC | Nov 2026 |
“Free” refers to the base game or chapter described in the listing, not necessarily the full story or every item shown alongside it. The table’s date is a month-level reference; it is not a guarantee that a listing, regional price, or chapter status will remain unchanged.
Which free horror game is closest to Fragments?
Unanswered is the closest choice if you want to search a threatening place for clues that are not immediately visible. We Went Back and Playable Archive are better if what you valued was observing a setting and piecing things together, rather than using a reveal tool.

Fragments puts Eugène in the LeBlanc Hotel as he investigates his sister’s disappearance. Its store description frames the goal as uncovering the hotel’s mysteries while escaping the concierge. Film reels, camera-revealed illusions and clues, puzzles, and stealth all contribute to that loop. A useful comparison, then, is not simply “another horror game”: it is whether a game lets you explore, makes you question what you see, and asks you to work something out while danger or unease hangs over the setting.
No recommendation here is documented as having Fragments’ exact camera mechanic. The UV flashlight in Unanswered is a related way to expose concealed information, not the same device or system. For a free horror game centered on that kind of reveal, [see Unanswered on Steam].
1. Unanswered: Which game has the closest hidden-clue mechanic?
Choose Unanswered if the most appealing part of Fragments is using a tool to expose clues that ordinary sight misses. The free first-person psychological-horror game lets you switch to a UV flashlight to reveal hidden trails and messages, then search for tools and keys, interact with fuse boxes, and evade entities.
Recommended Free Tools
That combination makes it a stronger mechanical match than a game that merely shares a first-person viewpoint or a “Horror” label. Still, it is not a hotel story, and the flashlight is not a camera: treat it as a similar clue-finding idea rather than an equivalent mechanic. The Steam listing identifies the free base game as Act 1, with later acts described as future DLC. If you want a complete free series, that distinction matters; the listing does not establish a completed free saga.
Check the requirements and content warning before installing. The minimum requirements list 64-bit Windows 10/11 and 16 GB of RAM, so it is not safe to assume the game will suit a low-memory computer. The developer warning mentions trauma, implied suicide, blood, corpses, and ritual violence. Check the Steam listing for Unanswered for current requirements and warning details.
2. We Went Back: What if you want an environmental puzzle?
Pick We Went Back if you enjoy studying a room or corridor for changes and using what you notice to solve an escape-room-style puzzle. It is a free first-person horror game set on a space station and built around a time loop, so its setting and story differ sharply from the LeBlanc Hotel.
Its appeal is observation: small environmental details matter, and the studio’s description says, “The environment holds the key.” The developer estimates a 30–50-minute experience. That is a studio estimate, not a measured completion time, and individual play can take longer if a puzzle stalls you. It suits a player who wants a compact, clue-focused session; it is a poor fit if the hotel, the missing-sister story, or a camera is the non-negotiable part of Fragments for you.

3. Playable Archive: Is there a short investigation to finish in one sitting?
Playable Archive is a free first-person investigation released October 26, 2026. Its premise centers on an archive and mysterious material connected to a New England home, making it a reasonable pick when you want to investigate an unsettling story rather than spend hours in a combat-heavy campaign.
The developer specifies a 30–60-minute length and no save system, and recommends completing it in one sitting. Plan accordingly: this is not the best download to begin when you may need to leave partway through. The premise is intriguing, but those details do not guarantee that every mystery will be fully answered. Its warnings include violence, murder, and occult references; skip it or check the listing further if those subjects are a concern. The archive investigation is a different setup from Fragments’ hotel and camera clues, so think of it as a short atmospheric alternative rather than a mechanical duplicate.
4. Blameless: What is a good free choice for investigation and escape?
Blameless is a free 3D story-and-puzzle adventure about investigative exploration in an unfinished house. It fits if you want to move through a place, examine what is happening, and solve puzzles as part of an escape-oriented story.
The developer describes it as a full title with an open ending and estimates a 20–60-minute playthrough. “Full title” does not mean a neatly closed story: the open ending is a meaningful caveat if you prefer horror games that resolve every thread. The unfinished-house setting is also a notable contrast with Fragments’ hotel. Its alternative puzzle solutions may appeal if you like testing more than one way through a problem, but the available description does not establish that it has a camera, stealth system, or the same narrative structure as Fragments.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Fingerbones: Which free game builds its story from evidence?
Try Fingerbones if the satisfying part of a horror game is assembling a disturbing narrative from scattered notes and atmosphere. David Szymanski’s free first-person game uses notes and changing music to reveal its story; it leans more on interpretation than active puzzle-solving or stealth.
The developer says a typical sitting is about half an hour. There is no save system, and the game quits automatically when complete, so treat it as a short, self-contained session rather than a long campaign you can pause and resume at will. It is a looser match than Unanswered for anyone seeking a tool-based clue reveal, but a good fit if Fragments’ investigative feeling mattered more than its camera. The music and written evidence do much of the storytelling, so it offers a different rhythm from sneaking around a concierge or solving a sequence of physical obstacles.
Is Fragments of Dread – False Haven the same game as Fragments?
No. Campus ADN’s Fragments is the October 2026 hotel-investigation game; Fragments of Dread – False Haven is a separate game, not another name for it. Similar titles make this an easy search-result mix-up.

False Haven is a free, short first episode of psychological horror about a boy at his grandmother’s house. Its VHS-inspired visuals, atmospheric sound, object interaction, and puzzles make it a possible bonus if you want another first-person horror experience. But do not infer from a free first episode that other episodes are free, or that it is a continuation of Campus ADN’s game. It is best understood as a namesake pick with its own premise and style.
6. Cry of Fear: Want more game, combat, and a longer campaign?
Choose Cry of Fear if you are willing to trade Fragments’ compact investigation for a longer psychological survival-horror game with hostile encounters and combat. It is a free standalone release; a Half-Life purchase is not required.
Team Psykskallar describes the solo campaign as over eight hours and also lists a separate cooperative campaign for up to four players. Those are developer-described modes and scope, not measured play statistics. This is a substantial step up in length from the other short experiences here, and its combat makes it a deliberately looser comparison. If you want to examine clues and avoid a concierge rather than fight enemies, it is probably not the next game to download.
There is a compatibility detail worth checking: older OS specifications remain listed, while Steam notes that its current client requires Windows 10 or later. Do not assume a legacy operating-system requirement means the present Steam client will run on that system. Review the current store and client requirements for your computer before installing.
7. Dagon: by H. P. Lovecraft: Is a story-first horror game enough?
Dagon: by H. P. Lovecraft is a free, voiced 3D adaptation of Lovecraft’s short story. It is the choice for players who want atmosphere and narrated literary horror more than stealth, a camera mechanic, or a dense run of puzzles.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The developer estimates the free adaptation at about 30 minutes. Optional paid DLC and additional stories are presented alongside it, so distinguish the free base adaptation from those extras when deciding what to download or buy. The short length makes it an easy way to try a story-led format, but the game is a departure from exploring a hotel and piecing together interactive clues. Readers who want to continue with the source material could look for a Lovecraft collection whose particular edition includes “Dagon”; contents vary by edition, so verify the table of contents rather than assuming every collection includes it.
8. Paper Lily – Chapter 1: Want a longer puzzle story in another format?
Paper Lily – Chapter 1 is a free, story-led 2D RPG, not a first-person 3D horror game. It earns a place for players who care more about psychological unease, branching puzzle solutions, and narrative than about matching Fragments’ viewpoint or setting.

Developer Leef 6010 estimates about four hours and advertises multiple puzzle solutions and endings. That makes it a more substantial time commitment than the brief first-person games above, though the estimate is not a guarantee of how long a particular player will need. The listing explicitly calls it Chapter 1; do not read “free” as meaning the whole story is included. Optional paid supporter and soundtrack items are also listed. Choose it when you are open to 2D RPG conventions and a chapter boundary, not when you specifically want a short hotel exploration in 3D.
9. Poppy Playtime: What if you want mascot horror instead?
Poppy Playtime is an optional branch for players who want puzzles in a creepy toy factory rather than an investigative hotel. Its free base game covers Chapter 1, where a GrabPack is used for puzzles and interactions in an abandoned factory. Later chapters are separate paid DLC, so the free download is an entry point, not the entire series.
This is more toy-chase mascot horror than Fragments’ camera-and-clue structure. It belongs lower on a list of close matches, but can suit someone who wants a different visual style and puzzle setting. The game’s character Huggy Wuggy also has physical merchandise: the publisher’s store lists plush products, including variants marked preorder at the research checkpoint. A plush is optional merchandise, not something needed to play. The listing’s status can change, and no particular third-party retailer’s stock or authorization should be assumed. See Poppy Playtime on Steam for the game listing.
What other free horror games are worth considering if format matters less?
Two free options broaden the field but move further from Fragments’ first-person exploration. Doki Doki Literature Club! is reading-led psychological horror rather than a first-person investigation. Team Salvato explicitly warns against treating its cute art as a sign that it is suitable for children; appearance alone is not a content guide.
Welcome To The Dark Place is a text-based, audio-led experience that its developer describes as “a text-based, auditory nightmare.” It is a very different format from searching rooms, and its listing warns about self-harm descriptions. These options make sense if the reader’s main interest is psychological horror, regardless of camera or viewpoint. They should not displace the closer picks when the desired experience is exploring a space and uncovering clues.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you choose among these games?
Start with the feature you want to carry over from Fragments, then check whether the free listing actually covers the experience you expect.
- For hidden visual clues: choose Unanswered for its UV flashlight, while remembering that the free base game is Act 1.
- For environmental observation and puzzles: choose We Went Back; its time-loop space-station setting is a departure from the hotel.
- For a short investigation: consider Playable Archive, but reserve one sitting because it has no save system.
- For evidence-led storytelling: try Fingerbones if notes and atmosphere are enough, or Blameless if you want a more explicit puzzle-and-escape structure.
- For a long, combat-oriented campaign: choose Cry of Fear, not if you are specifically seeking a short stealth puzzle.
- For narrative horror in another format: look at Dagon for voiced literary horror or Paper Lily for a longer 2D RPG chapter.
- For a similar title, not a sequel: Fragments of Dread – False Haven is unrelated to Campus ADN’s Fragments.
Before installing, check the current Steam listing for device requirements, regional availability, content warnings, and whether a game’s free portion is a complete experience, a chapter, or an act. That is especially important for games with no save system, explicit warnings, or paid chapters shown beside the base download.

How we picked these recommendations
The order prioritizes resemblance to the specific elements in Fragments: first-person exploration, uncovering hidden information, puzzles, and unease. It then broadens to story-driven horror, longer campaigns, and visibly different formats so readers can choose a purposeful departure rather than mistake a shared genre tag for a close match.
The list uses store and publisher descriptions, stated developer estimates, and listed requirements and warnings. It is not based on firsthand playtesting or a claim that one game is objectively best. A free game may be a complete short experience, a first chapter, or an act with later content planned as DLC; those differences are called out because they affect what “free” means for a player.
Frequently Asked Questions
