If you need offline machine translation, start with Argos Translate or TranslateLocally; if you need a translation API you can host, consider LibreTranslate. For translating documents with human review, OmegaT or Matecat are computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools—not one-click translators. The available sources support these seven options, but not a defensible list of eleven or an accuracy ranking.
First, decide what kind of translation tool you need
Machine-translation software generates a draft in another language. CAT software helps a human translator work through a document using features such as translation memory, glossary management, and file handling. Some CAT tools can connect to machine-translation services, but that does not make them equivalent to a simple text or webpage translator.
- Translate text or webpages: look at local machine-translation apps, browser translation, or a machine-translation platform.
- Translate documents with human review: look at CAT software with the file formats and translation-memory features your work needs.
- Provide translation through an application: consider an API and decide whether you want to run it yourself or use a hosted service.
“Free” and “open source” describe different things. A project may publish open-source code while also offering an online service; using the service is not the same as downloading and running the software. Offline use also depends on having the appropriate language models installed, and optional online connectors may still need a network connection.
Which free and open-source translators are worth considering?
1. Argos Translate: local machine translation
Argos Translate is an open-source translation library that can be used as a Python library, command-line tool, or graphical application. Its language models are installed as .argosmodel packages, enabling local translation when the needed model is available on the device.

Check whether Argos has a model for your exact language pair before relying on it. The documentation describes pivoting through an intermediate language when a direct pair is missing; that can make translation possible, but may reduce quality. The actual result should be checked by someone who knows the languages.
2. LibreTranslate: a self-hostable API and web app
LibreTranslate is an open-source API and web app built around the Argos Translate engine. Its documentation explains local installation and self-hosting for readers who want to deploy a translation service themselves. It also describes managed hosting as a paid option, so open-source software should not be confused with a promise that every hosted endpoint is free.
This is a better fit for someone comfortable setting up or integrating a service than for someone who simply wants an offline desktop translator. The project identifies its license as AGPLv3; check the current project terms for your intended deployment.

3. TranslateLocally: a local translation application
TranslateLocally is a local translation application based on Marian and Bergamot. Its repository points to releases for Windows, Linux, and Mac, making it a candidate for readers who want translation on their own computer rather than in a web service.
Before installing it, check the repository’s current release information, supported platform details, and available models. “Local” describes the intended translation path; it does not establish that every model or optional feature works offline.
4. Firefox webpage translation: translate pages in the browser
Mozilla’s documentation says compatible Bergamot models power Firefox webpage translation starting with Firefox 118. This is useful for reading supported webpages in a browser, but it is not a document CAT environment or a general-purpose translation API.

Language availability can depend on the locale and platform. Check Mozilla’s current documentation and the options shown in your Firefox installation rather than assuming every language pair is available.
5. Apertium: an open machine-translation platform
Apertium describes itself as a free and open-source machine-translation platform. Its interfaces documentation lists multiple ways to access the platform, including document translation.
The reviewed project materials do not establish a current inventory of supported pairs or comparable translation-quality results. Confirm that your required pair and workflow are supported before choosing it.

6. OmegaT: desktop CAT software for human translators
OmegaT is a free desktop CAT application for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It provides translation-memory features such as fuzzy matches, as well as glossaries, team translation, and support for multiple files. Its project describes support for around 30 file formats and lists connectors to machine-translation services.
OmegaT is designed to assist a human translator working through a project, not to provide a one-click translation of arbitrary text. The project identifies the software as GPLv3. Its homepage listed version 6.1.1 as the latest release when accessed on October 8, 2026; check the project site for the current version and compatibility details.
7. Matecat: online CAT software with downloadable code
Matecat describes itself as a free, open-source online CAT tool. The project also makes downloadable software available under the LGPL. These are distinct aspects: using an online service is not the same as downloading and deploying its code.

How to choose for your actual language pair
- Write down the exact source and target languages. A tool’s general description is not proof it supports your pair. Check current model or project availability for that pair.
- Decide whether the work must stay on your device. For offline machine translation, investigate Argos Translate or TranslateLocally and confirm the required model can be installed. For webpages, check Firefox’s current language options.
- Match the tool to the material. A browser feature is for webpages; a CAT tool is for human-led document projects; an API is for software integration or a service deployment.
- Try a representative sample. Compare output for your own language pair and subject matter, then have a qualified speaker review it when accuracy matters. The available sources do not provide a comparable cross-tool benchmark or an objective accuracy ranking.
- Check the data path and terms. Determine whether text is processed locally or sent to a service, whether optional connectors transmit data, and which current license and hosting terms apply to the version you plan to use.
Why this is not an eleven-tool ranking
The available project sources substantiate seven distinct tools or features, not eleven comparable products. Filling out the count with connected services, underlying engines already included in another entry, or unrelated translation software would imply a level of verification and comparability that is not established. Nor do the sources support ranking these options by translation accuracy: that depends on the language pair, text, and workflow, and no comparable benchmark is provided.
