1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFour options in the available official project information can be identified as free and open source with Windows and Linux support: Persepolis Download Manager, Motrix, aria2, and JDownloader. They suit different workflows: Persepolis and Motrix are graphical apps, aria2 is a command-line utility, and JDownloader is a graphical download manager. The evidence does not establish seven qualifying picks, so this guide does not pad the list with unverified recommendations.
How to choose a download manager
Start with how you want to manage downloads, then check which features the project documents for its current version. A graphical interface is easier to operate without terminal commands; a command-line tool can suit scripted or terminal-based workflows. Queues, scheduling, protocols, and installation requirements are separate capabilities: a project’s support for one does not establish the others.
- Choose Persepolis if you want a graphical app with documented queues and scheduling.
- Choose Motrix if you want a graphical app for Windows or Linux and prefer not to install its aria2 engine separately.
- Choose aria2 if you are comfortable using a terminal or integrating a command-line utility into a workflow.
- Consider JDownloader if you want a download-management tool with official Windows and Linux downloads, while checking its current documentation for the specific features you need.
Four options with official Windows and Linux support
| Program | Windows and Linux availability | Interface and documented workflow | Queue and scheduling evidence | Installation or engine notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Persepolis Download Manager | Project overview lists Windows and GNU/Linux distributions. | Graphical download manager; multi-segment downloads and video downloading from named sites are listed. | Queues and scheduling are listed. | Not stated in the project overview cited here. |
| Motrix | About page lists Windows and Linux; the manual provides installation instructions for both. | Graphical app. Its about page identifies the project as open source. | Not stated in the cited about page or getting-started manual. | The manual says the download engine is included, so a separate aria2 installation is not required. |
| aria2 | Not stated in the cited official project page. | Command-line utility; supports multi-connection downloads and multiple protocols. | Not stated in the cited project page. | Not stated in the cited project page. |
| JDownloader | Official download page offers Windows and Linux downloads. | Described on that page as a free, open-source download management tool. Specific protocols and other workflow details are not stated there. | Not stated in the cited download page. | Not stated in the cited download page. |
What each download manager is best suited to
Persepolis Download Manager: queues and scheduling in a graphical app
Persepolis’s project overview describes it as free and open-source software for GNU/Linux distributions, BSD, macOS, and Windows. It lists multi-segment downloading, queues, scheduling, and video downloading from named sites. Those listed capabilities make it a useful first option to investigate if you want a graphical workflow with scheduling, rather than a terminal-only tool. The overview does not establish further details such as a particular protocol list or engine-installation requirements. See the Persepolis project overview.
Motrix: graphical Windows and Linux app with its engine included
Motrix’s about page identifies the project as open source and lists Windows and Linux. Its getting-started manual provides installation instructions for both and says the download engine is bundled, so installing aria2 separately is unnecessary. The cited pages do not establish queue or scheduling behavior, so check the current manual if those are deciding features. Read about Motrix and consult its getting-started manual.

aria2: open-source command-line utility, not a graphical app
aria2’s official page explicitly describes it as a command-line utility, lists support for multiple protocols and multi-connection downloads, and states that it is licensed under GPL version 2 or later. It is therefore an option for users comfortable with terminal commands, not a ready-made graphical download manager. The cited project page does not establish Windows or Linux availability, queues, scheduling, or installation steps; verify those details against the build or package you plan to use. Visit the aria2 project page.
JDownloader: official downloads for both operating systems
JDownloader’s official download page describes the software as a free, open-source download management tool and offers Windows and Linux downloads. That establishes the basic platform and licensing claims for this pick, but the cited page does not substantiate a detailed protocol list, scheduling support, or comparative performance. Consult current official documentation for any feature you need before choosing it. View JDownloader’s download page.

Why this guide lists four instead of seven
A list of seven would imply that seven current projects have been verified as both open source and available for Windows and Linux. The official material available here does not establish that for seven options. It is more useful to distinguish the four supported recommendations from software whose license or platform claim needs further verification than to present an uncertain list as definitive.
Free Download Manager: current open-source status is not established here
Free Download Manager’s features page lists version 6.x support for Windows, macOS, Android, and Linux, but labels “Open source” and related legacy functionality specifically under version 3.9. That page alone does not establish that the current version 6.x is open source. Treat it as a free cross-platform candidate, not as a verified current open-source recommendation, unless an authoritative source for the current release confirms its license. Check the features page and its version-specific notes.

Do not choose by advertised speed claims alone
Multi-connection downloading is a feature, not proof that one program will be faster than another for your connection, server, or files. The cited project material does not provide an attributable comparative benchmark, so there is no evidence-based speed winner among these options. Choose based on interface, supported workflow, and confirmed platform and license information.
