First decide whether you need a keepsake print, a digital file, a class photo, or an image the school will accept for its yearbook or records. Those needs have different costs and requirements.
Choose the photo job before choosing the option
A package can bundle items your family will not use. Write down what you actually need, then compare options against that list:
- One keepsake print: A home portrait or a single-print school order may be enough.
- A shareable digital image: Check that the file is full resolution and ask what you are allowed to do with it.
- A class photo: This may be available only through the school’s provider or on its order form.
- A yearbook or school-record portrait: Confirm the school’s specifications and deadline before substituting a family-made or independently photographed image.
There is no representative current national price average established by the available evidence. Prices and package contents vary by school, provider, and date, so use your own order form and local quotes rather than an old online price as a benchmark.
Compare the practical alternatives

Take a portrait at home
A phone or camera you already own can be enough for a family portrait, avoiding a school package purchase. The tradeoff is that you take the picture, choose the image, and handle any printing yourself. A phone tripod with a remote can make a hands-free setup easier, but it is optional; a stable household surface can work too. Before relying on the image for anything beyond family use, ask the school whether it meets yearbook or administrative requirements. Requirements can differ by school, and an at-home portrait is not automatically a substitute for the provider’s school-day image.
Order less from the school package
If you want the school’s portrait, inspect the current order form rather than assuming the largest bundle is the only choice. Check whether it offers a single print, a digital file, or a class photo separately, and add shipping, tax, and any extras to the displayed price. Confirm retake availability and deadlines before placing an order.

A 2016 order form for Allen Consolidated Schools and Lifetouch listed packages from $11 to $52, but that is a historical, school-specific example—not a current price guide or national average. The form is useful mainly as a reminder that package menus and add-ons can vary: Allen Consolidated Schools’ 2016 Lifetouch order form.
Ask about assistance
If cost is the obstacle, contact the school office or picture provider and ask whether any current assistance is available, how to apply, and whether it covers a package, prints, or another option. Lifetouch says it donates thousands of picture packages each year; that company statement does not guarantee that assistance is available at every school or that every family qualifies. Get a complete quote from an independent photographer
A local photographer may offer more flexible communication or posing than a standardized school setup. In exchange, a smaller provider may have fewer ordering tools or slower support; these are possibilities to ask about, not universal traits. Request a written total that includes the session, selected images, prints, delivery, and any extra fees. Ask what rights come with a digital file—such as whether you may print it yourself—and confirm that the school accepts the resulting portrait for the use you have in mind.
Ask how the school’s provider model works
Some providers advertise services to schools at no charge while families purchase photos separately. For example, one Chicago provider describes view-first online galleries and school services at no charge to schools. That is one provider’s model, not proof that every school can get equivalent services free or that families will have no costs. Ask your school how the arrangement works locally, who pays for what, whether the school receives revenue, and how images may be used: My Student Photos’ school information.

Check image rights and privacy before you order
For any provider, ask the school or company how student images are stored, how long they are retained, who can access or share them, whether deletion requests are possible, and whether the images are used in yearbooks or directories. Use a short checklist before deciding
- What do you need: a print, a digital file, a class photo, or an accepted school portrait?
- What is the total out-of-pocket cost after shipping, tax, and add-ons?
- How many prints and what sizes are included, and is the digital file full resolution?
- What image-use permissions come with the file?
- Are retakes available, and when will the image be delivered?
- How much effort will ordering or taking the portrait require?
- Will the school accept this image for the intended yearbook or administrative use?
- Who stores the image, who can access it, and what are the retention and sharing terms?
Reported prices in news coverage can also be specific examples, not a market survey. The Atlantic reported in 2025 that Lifetouch reaches “30 million American schoolchildren each year”; that attributed figure describes the company’s reported reach, not the number of families who must buy packages or a measure of what they cost: The Atlantic’s 2025 article on school picture day.
