If you already use Playwright, its built-in screenshot assertions are the simplest self-managed free alternative to Happo. For hosted visual review, compare Argos and Chromatic. But you may not need to switch: Happo’s published free plan includes 5,000 snapshots per month in Chrome, plus visual and accessibility testing. Quotas and plan terms can change; the figures below are from vendors’ official pages accessed October 3, 2026.
Check whether Happo’s free plan already fits
Happo lists a free plan with 5,000 snapshots per month, Chrome, visual and accessibility testing, no credit card, and no time limit. A snapshot means one component variant rendered in one browser, so testing the same variant in multiple browsers uses multiple snapshots. When a free account reaches its quota, captures pause until the next cycle or an upgrade. See Happo’s pricing page for current terms.
Staying with Happo may be the most practical choice if Chrome coverage and that monthly allowance are enough. Its Playwright integration uses existing tests to capture selected UI states and supports CI workflows. Consider an alternative if you want project-managed baselines, a different hosted review workflow, or a free allowance that better matches your capture needs.
Compare the free alternatives
| Option | What the official documentation says | Best fit | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright Test | Built-in toHaveScreenshot() assertions compare screenshots with reference images. The test runner can generate or update snapshots. |
Teams already using Playwright that want to keep baselines with the project. | Your team manages baseline files, review, and consistent rendering conditions. |
| Argos | Its pricing page lists a free Hobby plan with up to 5,000 screenshots and Pro from $100 per month with 35,000 screenshots included. | Teams looking for a hosted visual-testing service with a published free allowance and upgrade pricing. | Check current plan capabilities and what happens to your workflow if usage exceeds the free capacity. |
| Chromatic | Its FAQ lists 5,000 snapshots per month on the free plan. Testing and review pause at the cap until the next month or an upgrade. Its Playwright documentation describes cloud capture and review. | Teams whose framework and review process fit Chromatic’s hosted workflow. | Account for the monthly cap and confirm the capture setup fits your project. |
| Happo | Its free plan lists 5,000 snapshots per month in Chrome, with visual and accessibility testing. | Teams whose current Happo setup meets their browser and volume needs. | Free captures pause at quota; one component variant in one browser counts as one snapshot. |
Argos’s published pricing is at its pricing page. Chromatic’s quota and pause behavior are described in its official FAQ, and its Playwright setup is covered in the Playwright documentation. Recheck these vendor pages before choosing: pricing, quotas, and plan details can change.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose by workflow, not quota alone
- Start with your existing test framework. If Playwright is already in your CI pipeline, native assertions avoid adding a separate hosted review service. If you need hosted capture and review, assess Argos or Chromatic against your repository and framework.
- Decide who owns the baselines. With Playwright, reference images are project snapshots that your team reviews and updates. Hosted services provide a cloud review workflow instead; confirm how it fits your approval process.
- Check where rendering happens. Playwright compares screenshots produced in your test environment. Hosted options have their own capture workflows. Keep the distinction in mind when diagnosing differences between local and CI runs.
- Verify browser and viewport coverage. Happo’s cited free allowance specifies Chrome. Check each alternative’s current documentation for the browser coverage and capture configuration your app needs; do not assume equal coverage from equal snapshot quotas.
- Calculate the quota in the vendor’s unit. A component-by-browser snapshot model may consume quota differently from a screenshot count in your own test suite. Estimate representative changes and browser combinations before committing.
- Plan for the cap and ongoing work. Confirm whether testing pauses, whether an upgrade is required, and who will review diffs. A zero-price tool still uses CI time and requires baseline storage, screenshot review, and maintenance of stable rendering conditions.
Set up Playwright screenshot comparison
Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() captures a reference on the first run and compares later captures against it. The reference files are organized with the test and can reflect browser and platform identifiers. Install Playwright Test and its browser dependencies according to the official installation guide, then add a test such as this:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('pricing page visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/pricing');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('pricing-page.png', {
fullPage: true,
});
});
Run the test once to create the reference screenshot. Inspect and commit the generated snapshot alongside the test. On subsequent runs, Playwright compares the new screenshot with that baseline and reports a difference if it exceeds the configured threshold. Use the test runner’s snapshot-update option only after reviewing the change; do not automatically bless every new image.

For the exact assertion options, snapshot naming, and update workflow, follow Playwright’s screenshot comparison documentation. The key operational requirement is repeatability. Playwright warns: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Use a consistent CI image, browser version, and test configuration for generating and comparing baselines. Control dynamic content such as timestamps, rotating promotions, and user-specific data where those changes are not what the test is intended to catch.
Troubleshoot noisy or failing comparisons
- Many unrelated pixels change after a CI or developer-machine update: rendering may have changed with the operating system, browser version, fonts, hardware, or headless configuration. Re-run in the baseline environment before updating snapshots, and standardize the CI image and browser.
- A test fails on its first run because there is no reference image: the initial run is when Playwright creates the baseline. Run it in the intended baseline environment, inspect the generated file, and commit it.
- A diff appears on every run: check for unstable page content, animations, delayed loading, or data that changes between runs. Make the test state deterministic before accepting a new baseline.
- A large snapshot update is proposed: review the affected images as a code change. If the difference is unexpected, investigate the UI and rendering environment rather than updating the baseline blindly.
- A hosted free account stops producing reviews: check the service’s usage meter and current quota policy. Happo and Chromatic document pause behavior at their free caps; upgrade or wait for the next cycle as the applicable plan allows.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of a live page rather than visual-regression baselines tied to your app’s tests, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns an image or PDF; the API also supports HTML/CSS-to-image, full-page shots, element capture, custom CSS and JavaScript, and other capture settings. It is a different tool for page capture, not a replacement for managing visual-regression baselines.

Are Playwright screenshot assertions the same as a hosted visual review service?
No. Playwright stores and compares reference images as part of the project workflow. Argos and Chromatic offer hosted review workflows, so the choice includes who manages baselines and how reviewers inspect changes.
