TP-Link denied the allegations that day. The cases are allegations—not court findings—and do not establish that every TP-Link router is unsafe or that owners should replace their devices.
Why are states suing TP-Link?
The states frame their cases as consumer-protection actions. They allege that TP-Link’s descriptions of its corporate ties, product origins, router security and data handling leave consumers with a misleading impression. Iowa says its case invokes the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act; Nebraska describes a request for consumer-law relief; and Montana says it is seeking an injunction and civil penalties. The courts will determine whether the allegations are proven and whether any remedy is warranted.
The states also cite security vulnerabilities and past exploitation claims. Those claims should be understood as the states’ allegations and attributions, not as a finding that all TP-Link products have been compromised.
Which states filed, and what relief is known?
Bloomberg Law reported that all four states filed separate cases on October 6. The Iowa, Nebraska and Montana attorneys general also announced filings that day. The available descriptions of requested remedies differ by state:

What the states allege about China ties and manufacturing
Corporate connections
State officials allege that TP-Link has not fully severed relevant China-based connections and that consumers are not given enough information about those relationships. Montana’s announcement describes TP-Link Systems as incorporated in California and says it was founded in Shenzhen in 1996. TP-Link disputes that its U.S. business is controlled by the Chinese government or the Chinese Communist Party. The ownership and control claims remain disputed in the litigation.
Where products are made
TP-Link says its devices sold in the United States are manufactured in Vietnam. Nebraska’s announcement alleges that the company has major research, development and manufacturing operations in China, and that many components used at its Vietnam plant come from or through China. The states’ claims about the supply chain and TP-Link’s statement about where U.S.-sold devices are manufactured address related but not identical questions.

What TP-Link says in response
In an October 6 statement, TP-Link called the suits “built on false premises.” Corporate affairs officer Steve Kovsky said the company had provided state regulators with documentation that U.S.-sold TP-Link Systems devices are made in Vietnam and that TP-Link Systems is an independent U.S. company not owned or controlled by the Chinese government or the Chinese Communist Party. The company also called claims that its products threaten user security or grant foreign governments unauthorized network access baseless. Those statements are TP-Link’s position, not an independent determination by a court.
In a separate March 5, 2025 response to testimony before the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, TP-Link said it was headquartered in Irvine, California, denied Chinese government control over router design and production, and argued that threat actors target routers from multiple manufacturers. That earlier statement is background, not a response to the October 2026 lawsuits.

Why market-share figures differ
The state announcements assert that TP-Link holds at least 60% of the U.S. retail market for Wi-Fi systems and small-office/home-office routers. TP-Link’s 2025 statement, citing Circana market research for 2024, reports different shares for two market categories. The figures should not be treated as interchangeable: they describe different segments and come from different attributions.
| Market measure | Reported share | Attribution and period |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. retail Wi-Fi systems and small-office/home-office routers | At least 60% | Claim in state announcements, 2026; the underlying dataset and precise market definition are not specified in the information cited here. |
| U.S. consumer router market, unit share | 36.6% | Circana, 2024, as reported by TP-Link in 2025. |
| U.S. consumer router market, dollar share | 31% | Circana, 2024, as reported by TP-Link in 2025. |
| U.S. consumer networking-device market, unit share | 35.9% | Circana, 2024, as reported by TP-Link in 2025. |
| U.S. consumer networking-device market, dollar share | 27.3% | Circana, 2024, as reported by TP-Link in 2025. |
These figures do not by themselves resolve the dispute over market definition or establish which measure best describes TP-Link’s position across all Wi-Fi products.

What the security claims do—and do not—show
Iowa’s October 6 announcement quotes a warning it attributes to the FCC Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau: “[c]ompromised routers can enable in-depth network surveillance, data exfiltration, botnet attacks, and unauthorized access to U.S. government or American businesses’ networks.” The state also says the NSA and Microsoft reported exploitation of TP-Link router vulnerabilities by Chinese state hackers. These are claims and attributions in Iowa’s announcement; they are not proof that every TP-Link model is vulnerable or that a particular owner’s router has been accessed.
Separately, TP-Link publishes security advisories for specific products and firmware. Two 2026 advisories illustrate why model and version matter:

Rated CVSS v4.0 8.7 (High). | The advisory lists fixed firmware builds; confirm the applicable build against the exact model and hardware version on TP-Link’s support information. |
These disclosures concern named models and versions. They do not establish that every TP-Link device is affected or prove the broader legal allegations about corporate control, data practices or product security.
What TP-Link router owners should do
The available information does not support a blanket recommendation to replace TP-Link routers. Owners can check whether their specific device has an applicable update:
Quick Recap
- Read the label on the router or its administration interface to identify the exact model and hardware revision, such as “v14” or “v6.”
- Find that exact model and revision on TP-Link’s official support page and check its current security advisories and firmware downloads.
- Compare the installed firmware version with the build listed as fixed for the affected model and regional version. Do not install firmware for a different hardware revision or region.
- Follow TP-Link’s instructions for installing the matching update, then check the device’s firmware version again. If no supported update is listed or you cannot confirm compatibility, contact TP-Link support before attempting a manual firmware installation.
