Fortnite Creative is the in-game way to build islands, while UEFN (Unreal Editor for Fortnite) is a separate, PC-only editor for creators who want Unreal Engine workflows and more detailed control. You can use either on its own or combine them: Epic’s Live Edit feature lets you make changes in Creative while playtesting a UEFN project. Both routes use Creator Portal to publish.
What is the difference between Fortnite Creative and UEFN?
Creative is built into Fortnite: you create, edit, and save an island with the in-game Creative toolset. UEFN is a separate editor for Fortnite projects, bringing Unreal Engine workflows to environment building, lighting, visual effects, animation, and gameplay logic.

Epic’s Creative and UEFN comparison describes the tools and their scripting differences. UEFN is not the full Unreal Engine editor: Epic says Blueprint visual scripting is not available for gameplay or other custom scripts in UEFN.
Which tool should you choose?
Choose Creative if you want to build inside Fortnite
Creative is a sensible starting point if you want to create with Fortnite’s in-game tools, do not have access to a suitable PC, or prefer to avoid installing a separate editor. Epic’s current installation guide lists Creative for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and 5, Android, iOS, and PC. Availability can change, so check the guide for the current list.

Choose UEFN if you need deeper environment tools or Verse
Consider UEFN if you have a PC that meets Epic’s requirements and want Unreal Engine workflows for more detailed terrain, props, lighting, landscapes, animation, visual effects, or Verse-based gameplay logic. Check Epic’s system requirements before buying or upgrading hardware; specifications can change with software versions.
UEFN includes a Verse code editor, but you do not need to assume every project requires custom code. The tools you need depend on the island you are making; Epic’s feature comparison can help you check the available workflow.

Use both when the workflow benefits
Epic’s Live Edit documentation describes making immediate changes in Creative to a UEFN project during playtesting. That lets you use UEFN for project work and Creative for iterative in-game edits, rather than treating the tools as mutually exclusive.
What do you need to install UEFN?
Epic’s installation guide says UEFN runs on PCs only and publishes minimum and recommended operating-system, memory, graphics, and storage requirements. Consult the live installation and requirements page for the current specifications. A new PC is relevant only if you choose UEFN and your existing computer does not meet those requirements; it is not a prerequisite for using Fortnite Creative on its supported platforms.

How does publishing work?
Both creation routes lead to Creator Portal. Epic’s Creative publishing guide and UEFN publishing guide describe preparing the island, then using Creator Portal to provide details and media, complete the IARC rating questionnaire, choose visibility, and submit the release for moderation. The UEFN guide states that a publisher must be 18 or older.
Program eligibility can change. Epic’s May 4, 2023 Island Creator Program announcement described account-age and recent editing-activity conditions at that time; those are historical details, not a guarantee of current eligibility. Check Creator Portal for the rules that apply now.

Can I make a Fortnite island without UEFN?
Yes. Fortnite Creative is a standalone creation route, so UEFN is not required to make an island with the in-game Creative toolset. UEFN is an additional option when its PC-based editor and workflows fit the project.
