Fortinet reported on April 13, 2011, that Torpig accounted for 30 percent of new botnet activity in its latest 30-day threat landscape. That was a historical finding based on Fortinet’s own telemetry—not evidence that Torpig is active today. Dark Reading published the announcement on April 16, 2011.
What Fortinet reported about Torpig
Fortinet said its threat-landscape findings reflected four weeks of data collected from FortiGate appliances and FortiGuard production intelligence systems worldwide. In that period, the company attributed 30 percent of new botnet activity to Torpig. The announcement does not provide enough sampling detail to determine how representative that share was.
The announcement also described Torpig as associated with Mebroot, a rootkit that Fortinet said could compromise a computer’s master boot record. Derek Manky, then a Fortinet senior security strategist, said Torpig typically spread through infected web pages carrying Mebroot. These are Fortinet’s descriptions in its announcement, not an independent assessment of a current campaign.
How Fortinet described the threat
Manky said Mebroot could compromise the chain of trust from system startup and bypass personal firewalls through the operating system. In his account, that made gateway-level security relevant: Fortinet said network gateway security could mitigate the threat by blocking Mebroot-related traffic. The release did not include comparative defense tests or a specific configuration to apply.

What the other figures in the announcement mean
Fortinet reported several distinct observations from the same four-week period. They should not be conflated:
| Observation | Fortinet’s 2011 report |
|---|---|
| Torpig | 30 percent of new botnet activity in Fortinet’s latest 30-day threat landscape. |
| Hiloti | Roughly 15 percent of new botnet traffic; Fortinet said most of that traffic was found in Australia and Sweden. |
| Spam | Spam rates were about 30 percent following the March 2011 Rustock takedown. This was a separate spam-rate observation, not Torpig’s share of botnet activity. |
| Observed spamming IP addresses | Fortinet said these were commonly geolocated to the United States, India, and Brazil. |
| Torpig command-and-control detections | Fortinet said most detections originated from machines in Russia and Sudan. This describes detection origins, not the locations of the operators or victims. |
None of these figures establishes a present-day ranking or prevalence estimate.

What the mitigation claim does—and does not—establish
Fortinet’s announcement said gateway security could block Mebroot-related traffic and that FortiGuard Services customers should be protected against the vulnerability with appropriate configuration parameters. It did not name those parameters, give a procedure for checking or changing them, or guarantee protection on current systems. Treat the statement as Fortinet’s 2011 mitigation claim, not current configuration guidance.
The announcement names FortiGate appliances as a source of telemetry and discusses gateway security, but it does not endorse a current FortiGate model or establish present-day protection. The source is a syndicated Fortinet announcement published by Dark Reading.
