Formula 1 Grand Prix qualifying is a three-stage knockout session: Q1 eliminates six cars, Q2 eliminates six more, and the fastest ten contest Q3 for the top ten grid positions. Under the FIA’s 2026 Sporting Regulations, the stages last 18, 15 and 12 minutes respectively. Drivers’ times in the stage where they are eliminated determine their positions in the provisional qualifying order.
How the Q1, Q2 and Q3 knockout works
The 2026 Formula 1 field has 22 cars. All eligible cars begin in Q1; the slowest six are eliminated. The remaining 16 continue to Q2, where another six are eliminated. The final ten compete in Q3. This six-car elimination pattern reflects the 22-car field and 11 teams described in Formula 1’s 2026 explainer.
| Stage | Duration | Cars taking part | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 | 18 minutes | 22 | The six slowest are eliminated; 16 advance. |
| Q2 | 15 minutes | 16 | The six slowest are eliminated; 10 advance. |
| Q3 | 12 minutes | 10 | Drivers compete for positions 1–10; the fastest earns pole. |
These times and counts are specified in the FIA 2026 Formula 1 Sporting Regulations, Section B, Issue 05, dated 27 February 2026.
How qualifying times set the order
Each driver’s position is based on their best lap in the stage in which they were eliminated, or in Q3 if they reach it. Q3 sorts the ten remaining drivers into positions 1–10; the six Q2 eliminations are ordered by their Q2 times into positions 11–16; and the six Q1 eliminations are ordered by their Q1 times into positions 17–22. If two drivers record identical times in a qualifying period, the driver who set the time first receives priority under the FIA rules.

The fastest Q3 lap earns pole position in the qualifying classification. The final starting grid can differ if grid penalties or other sporting decisions apply.
Why Q3 is 12 minutes in the 2026 rules
Some Formula 1 explanatory pages list Q3 as 13 minutes, but that conflicts with the operative 12-minute duration in the FIA’s 2026 Sporting Regulations, Issue 05. The FIA regulations are the basis for the timings above; Formula 1’s glossary also lists Q3 as 12 minutes. The Formula 1 beginner’s guide to the 2026 regulations is helpful for understanding the expanded field and eliminations, but its Q3 figure differs.

Standard qualifying versus Sprint Qualifying
Q1, Q2 and Q3 are the standard knockout stages used to set the Grand Prix starting grid. Sprint Qualifying, often written SQ1, SQ2 and SQ3, is a separate session that sets the Sprint starting grid and uses shorter stages. The two formats share a knockout structure, but they determine the grids for different races. Formula 1’s guide to the F1 weekend explains where Sprint sessions fit into the weekend; consult the FIA regulations for the operative rules.
