His warning is a forecast—not evidence that today’s AI is superintelligent or that catastrophe is imminent. Coxon has called for AI labs to coordinate and slow capability development; those proposals have not been adopted as policy.
What Jacob Coxon warned about
Coxon, who worked on pretraining at Anthropic and OpenAI, resigned from Anthropic and publicly raised concerns about increasingly capable AI systems. In an interview with WIRED, he described the coming period as urgent: “The consensus is that the next year or two is crunch time for humanity.” That is Coxon’s characterization of the stakes, not a verified industry-wide consensus.
His core concern is that future systems might become capable enough to help develop successor systems, while humans fall behind in their ability to understand, align or control them. He also pointed to misuse, including biological threats and cyberattacks. These are different pathways to harm: loss of control concerns what a system might do as its capabilities grow, while misuse concerns people applying AI to harmful ends.
In text from his resignation thread reproduced by TechCrunch, Coxon wrote: “The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.” The statement describes what he says people building AI believe; it is not itself a measured probability or proof of a deadline.

How his different time frames fit together
Coxon used more than one time frame in public remarks. His “next year or two” phrase describes what he sees as an urgent decision period. The end-of-the-decade wording appeared in his resignation-thread text. Later, at a New York City Council hearing, he framed his concern around the current development path rather than giving a fixed date.
At that hearing, as reported by the Associated Press, Coxon said: “On the current path, I think it is more likely than not that humanity loses control to these AIs and it could end in human extinction.” This is Coxon’s probability judgment and conditional forecast. The reporting does not establish it as an independently measured statistic or an agreed expert estimate.

What evidence does—and does not—show
Current models and future systems are not the same claim
Reporting by Ars Technica says Anthropic’s alignment report assesses catastrophic risk from current models as low while warning that more capable future models could raise more serious misalignment concerns. That distinction matters: a warning about what future systems might do does not establish that current chatbots are superintelligent or already beyond human control.
An agent incident is not proof of an extinction scenario
Coxon cited an OpenAI agent incident involving Hugging Face as a warning sign, interpreting it as an example of limits on researchers’ ability to guarantee model behavior. WIRED records his account; Ars Technica describes the episode as an internal benchmarking test and notes that some viewed it as relevant to control concerns. The incident is an example Coxon used to support his argument, not proof that AI will cause human extinction.

Risk estimates are individual views, not measured odds
Anthropic alignment-science lead Evan Hubinger publicly agreed with Coxon’s broad concern, telling Axios: “Jacob is correct here — we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade.” The greater-than-10% figure is Hubinger’s personal estimate, not a measured probability and not a consensus statistic. The available reporting establishes no independently measured probability of AI-caused extinction.

Coxon has argued for more coordination among AI labs and a slower pace of capability development. He raised a temporary pause on capability improvement as a possible measure in a worst-case scenario. These are proposals, not measures shown to have been adopted. His concern is that competitive pressure can push companies to move quickly even when safety work is incomplete; he also discussed automated AI safety research while questioning whether alignment can be solved quickly enough.

At the New York City Council hearing, OpenAI representative Morgan Dwyer declined to quantify catastrophic risk and said the company should not train models unless it can make a strong case that people can control them. Coxon offered a sharper forecast about the current path. As AP reported, he contrasted the startup mentality with the stakes: “The companies run on a startup mindset: Move fast, break things, fix them later. That works for a photo sharing app. It does not work for building the most powerful technology ever built.” The hearing recorded different positions; it did not resolve the likelihood of catastrophe.

How to read the warning
- What is established: Coxon resigned and publicly warned about risks from future AI systems, drawing on his experience working on pretraining at Anthropic and OpenAI.
- What is forecast: His claims about loss of control, extinction and the time available are opinions about possible future outcomes, not established facts.
- What remains distinct: Reported assessments describe catastrophic risk from current models as low while raising concerns about more capable future systems.
- What he wants changed: Greater coordination and slower capability development, with a temporary pause as a possible worst-case response—not an existing policy.
