A temporary forehead e-tattoo being studied by University of Texas at Austin researchers combines brain- and eye-activity sensors to estimate mental workload during a task. In a small laboratory test involving six participants, its model predicted workload better than chance. That is early evidence—not proof that the device can read thoughts, identify emotions, diagnose stress, or reliably monitor employees. The cited reports describe a research prototype, not a product employers are currently using.
What the forehead e-tattoo measures
The prototype pairs two kinds of electrical signals. Electroencephalography (EEG) records electrical activity at the brain’s surface; electrooculography (EOG) records eye movements. The researchers used both inputs to estimate task-related mental workload: the cognitive demand associated with doing a particular task.
The sensors sit on hairless skin in a personalized layout: EEG sensors across the forehead, EOG sensors around the eyes, and a reference electrode behind the ear. The system links disposable skin-contact sensors to reusable electronics and a lightweight battery, and transmits data wirelessly. The University of Texas at Austin describes the design in its May 2025 report; IEEE Spectrum’s coverage likewise frames the work as a prototype under development.
“Mental state” is much broader than the system’s demonstrated target. A workload estimate does not mean the device can tell what someone is thinking, identify a specific emotion, or determine whether they have a mental-health condition. The reported result concerns workload levels associated with task difficulty in a study setting.

What the experiment showed
Six participants completed a visual memory task that became progressively harder. Researchers observed changes in brainwave activity associated with increased cognitive demand, then used a machine-learning model to predict workload from EEG and EOG signals. The model performed better than chance, according to the university and The Guardian’s report.
That result is a preliminary demonstration, not a workplace accuracy rate. A six-person laboratory study cannot establish how reliably the system would work across employees, tasks, or full work shifts. IEEE Spectrum notes that validation in real-world conditions is still needed, including when users move beyond controlled desktop tasks.

Could a boss use it to monitor workers?
The research suggests a possible future use: warning people in high-demand roles when their workload may be too high, so they can adjust or ask for help. Co-author Nanshu Lu described that as an eventual goal, not a capability already demonstrated in a workplace. The available reports do not document employer deployment or a validated method for detecting employees’ general mental states.
That distinction matters for privacy and workplace policy. A workload estimate is an inference from physiological signals, not a direct window into a person’s mind. The cited coverage raises questions about workplace monitoring, but it does not establish that employers are using this prototype or provide evidence of its accuracy during real shifts. Futurism’s coverage discusses the surveillance framing; that concern should not be mistaken for evidence of current use.

What is still limiting the prototype
It has only been tested in a small, controlled study
The six-person visual-memory experiment is too limited to show performance across different people, jobs, or working conditions. The cited reports provide no validated workplace detection rate, nor evidence that the system can deliver useful alerts during actual shifts.
It currently needs hairless skin
The University of Texas at Austin says the present version works on hairless skin. Researchers are working on ink-based sensors that could work with hair, but the cited coverage does not establish that this version is ready.

A user alert is a future aim
The researchers envision a real-time “workload decoder” that could warn someone to self-adjust or ask a colleague or AI system to take on work. That alert system is a proposed direction, not a reported feature validated in the six-participant experiment.

The contrast is between an established category of equipment and an early prototype, not a controlled product comparison. UT Austin’s May 2025 report says traditional EEG equipment can cost more than $15,000; it reports that the e-tattoo’s chips and battery pack cost $200 and disposable sensors about $20 each. These are figures reported by the university, not independently verified current retail prices. The Guardian separately reported Lu’s expectation that the complete device, including chip and battery, could cost less than $200; that is an attributed expectation, not a confirmed sale price.

But conventional EEG equipment is an established category, while this bespoke e-tattoo has only preliminary evidence from a small lab test and a hairless-skin limitation. The cited sources do not establish a commercially available version or justify ranking it against products on the market.
Is the e-tattoo available to buy?
No cited source identifies the studied forehead e-tattoo as a retail product. Consumer EEG headbands, research EEG systems, electrodes, gels, or conductive adhesive supplies are not established as equivalents to this prototype, so buying one would not mean buying the reported device or its workload-estimation system.
