Choose the Ford V8 by the job: a 5.0L F-150 is the half-ton option for daily use and moderate towing; a 6.8L or 7.3L gas Super Duty is the step up for heavier work; and a Ford Performance crate engine belongs in a project whose supporting systems and legal compliance have been planned. The 7.3L has the higher published output and gas towing figure, but no engine badge guarantees a particular truck’s capacity. Trailer, payload, hitch, axle, and configuration determine whether a complete truck is suitable.

Ford’s published maxima are available figures for specified vehicle configurations, not universal ratings. Ford says towing and payload vary with configuration, accessories, and passengers; check the exact truck and trailer combination before choosing by a table figure.
Which Ford V8 is best for towing?
The best choice depends on trailer weight and type, the truck’s available payload, and how much towing margin the job needs. For a half-ton truck and a moderate load, the 5.0L F-150 can be a sensible balance; for a heavier trailer or sustained work, compare Super Duty configurations, with the 7.3L gas V8 offering the higher published gas-engine towing figure.

Before comparing engines, establish the loaded trailer weight and the kind of hitch connection: bumper-pull, fifth-wheel, or gooseneck. Then check the specific truck’s door-jamb payload label, hitch rating, axle ratings, and gross combination limits. Include passengers, tools, hitch hardware, bed cargo, and the trailer’s tongue or pin weight in the payload calculation. A truck may have enough headline tow capacity yet run out of payload or another rating first.

Ford’s maximum available figures describe particular configurations. Cab, bed, drivetrain, axle, options, accessories, and occupants can affect the truck’s usable capacity. A published maximum is therefore a comparison point, not permission to tow that amount with every version of the model.
Choose a half-ton when its margin is real
The 5.0L F-150 is the fit when half-ton maneuverability and daily use matter and the exact truck’s payload and towing ratings cover the real load with a suitable margin. Ford’s 2026 F-150 XL page lists the 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 as available and gives that model page a 12,800-lb maximum available tow rating. Ford’s 2025 F-150 page lists 12,900 lb maximum available towing for the 5.0L V8. These are model-year and configuration-specific figures; the 100-lb difference does not establish that every 2025 truck tows more than every 2026 truck.
Move to Super Duty when the job needs more than a half-ton’s practical margin
Consider a Super Duty when payload, hitch class, trailer size, or sustained work use pushes beyond what the particular F-150 can comfortably and legally handle. Within the gas choices, the 6.8L is the lower-output path and the 7.3L is the stronger one. For the heaviest or most sustained towing, Ford’s 2026 guide also lists diesel Super Duty options: the 6.7L Power Stroke V8 at 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft, and a high-output version at 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft. Ford lists available maximum gooseneck towing of up to 38,600 lb and 40,000 lb, respectively. Those figures signal a different capability tier; they should not be attributed to the gas V8s.

Is the 5.0 Coyote enough for towing?
It can be, if the trailer and all truck cargo fit the rating of the exact F-150 configuration. The 5.0L is best treated as a capable half-ton option rather than a substitute for the payload, hitch, axle, or sustained-duty capacity of a heavy-duty truck.
Use the Ford page for the relevant model year as a starting point, then confirm the truck’s actual labels and ratings. The 2026 XL page’s 12,800-lb figure is a maximum available rating for the cited model page, not a rating for every F-150 with a 5.0L. The same applies to Ford’s 2025 figure of 12,900 lb. Accessories and passengers reduce the practical room available, and towing a heavy trailer can be constrained by payload or another limit before reaching the headline tow maximum.

The 5.2L supercharged V8 is a different proposition. Ford’s 2025 F-150 page lists up to 8,700 lb maximum available towing and 1,400 lb maximum available payload for it. That makes it a performance-oriented niche choice, not the default answer for a buyer prioritizing work capacity or towing.
Should I get the 6.8 or 7.3 Godzilla?
Choose the 6.8L if the Super Duty chassis and its work capability are the priority and the 7.3L’s extra output is not needed. Choose the 7.3L when you want the higher-output gas engine and the higher published gas towing figure, particularly for specified gooseneck configurations.

Ford’s figures show the 7.3L has more published horsepower and torque and a higher available maximum for gooseneck towing. They do not mean the 7.3L has a higher maximum payload: Ford’s listed maximum payload is higher for the 6.8L, at 8,000 lb versus 7,635 lb, in specified configurations. Nor should the gas engines’ figures be read as diesel-equivalent torque or maximum towing. The hitch type and exact truck configuration matter, especially when comparing a gooseneck number with a bumper-pull trailer.
Ford’s 2026 technical specifications describe both engines as naturally aspirated 90-degree V8s, with cast-iron blocks, aluminum heads, and pushrod and rocker-arm valvetrains. Both list 87-octane fuel. The specifications describe the engines, while the towing and payload maxima depend on the complete truck configuration.
Which Ford V8 is best for a work truck?
For a half-ton work truck with moderate loads, the 5.0L F-150 may fit if its payload and towing labels cover the full job. For heavier payloads, larger trailers, or sustained work, start with the Super Duty chassis and choose between its 6.8L and 7.3L gas engines according to the required output and configuration ratings.

Work loads often consume payload in ways a trailer-weight estimate misses. Add the driver and passengers, tools, equipment, cargo, hitch hardware, and any trailer tongue or pin weight. Then compare the total with the door-jamb payload label and check the axle, hitch, and gross combination limits as well. A truck’s maximum tow figure alone cannot show whether it can carry the people and equipment needed for the job.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Choose the 5.0L F-150 when maneuverability and everyday use are valuable and the truck’s actual load remains comfortably inside its ratings.
- Choose the 6.8L Super Duty when the job needs a heavy-duty chassis and the 6.8L’s published output and configuration-specific limits are enough.
- Choose the 7.3L Super Duty when the higher gas output or the higher available gas gooseneck towing figure fits the specified truck and trailer combination.
- Compare diesel Super Duty options when towing is especially heavy or sustained; Ford’s published diesel figures are in a higher capability range than its gas V8 figures.
Do not select a truck from an engine specification in isolation. The chassis, axle configuration, hitch, payload, trailer type, and actual equipment load all contribute to whether it can do the work.
What Ford V8 is best for an engine swap?
There is no single best crate engine for every swap: the right one depends on the vehicle, intended use, available packaging, transmission, control systems, and applicable emissions and inspection rules. Ford’s 7.3L Super Duty crate engine is one documented project path, but buying an engine does not give a modified vehicle a current truck’s factory tow rating or certification.
What the 7.3L crate-engine information establishes
Ford Performance identifies M-6007-73B as a 7.3L Super Duty gasoline crate engine. Its product page says the bellhousing bolt pattern is the same as the 4.6L, 5.4L, and 5.0L Coyote family. That is a useful compatibility detail, not a guarantee that the engine is a bolt-in installation: mounts, available space, transmission choice, controls, cooling, fuel delivery, exhaust, and the rest of the vehicle still need to be addressed.
Ford Performance gives this exact warning: “WARNING: This part is designed and intended for competition use only or off-highway use only.” Anyone considering a street-driven vehicle must determine whether the engine and complete conversion meet the rules that apply where the vehicle will be registered and inspected.

Account for the whole build
Before choosing an engine, write down the vehicle’s intended use and the requirements for the complete powertrain. A project brief should cover:
- Engine-bay dimensions, mounts, and other packaging constraints.
- Transmission compatibility and the controls or calibration needed to operate the engine and transmission together.
- Cooling capacity, fuel-system requirements, electrical integration, and exhaust routing.
- Expected vehicle weight, tire and axle capability, brakes, and the intended trailer or work load.
- Emissions, road-use, inspection, and registration requirements for the project’s location.
- Budget and time for supporting parts, installation, calibration, and compliance—not just the engine.
A swap’s towing ability depends on the completed vehicle and its rated components, not on the crate engine’s identity. Do not use the tow rating of a factory Super Duty as a claim about a custom build.
How should high-output crate announcements be treated?
In a 2025 announcement, Ford Performance said a supercharged 5.0L Coyote crate engine targeted 800+ horsepower and a Megazilla 2.0 targeted more than 1,000 horsepower. The announcement said both were intended to be orderable through Ford dealers or Ford Performance Parts in the fourth quarter of 2025. An announcement and target figures do not confirm current inventory, specifications of a production item, or orderability in November 2026; verify those details with an official current product or dealer listing before planning around either engine.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I make the final choice?
Use this sequence to avoid buying by displacement alone:
- Define the assignment. Decide whether the need is a daily-use half-ton, a heavy-duty work or towing truck, or an engine-swap project. A complete factory truck and a crate-engine build are different decisions.
- Write down the real load. Record trailer type, loaded trailer weight, tongue or pin weight, passengers, tools, hitch hardware, and bed cargo. Include the heaviest load the vehicle is expected to handle.
- Check the exact vehicle’s limits. Use the truck’s door-jamb payload label and verify hitch, axle, and gross combination limits. Confirm the exact model-year and configuration in Ford’s current towing information; do not assume a model-page maximum applies to the truck being considered.
- Choose the chassis class. If the load leaves too little practical margin in a half-ton, compare Super Duty configurations instead. If the requirement is beyond the gas options’ published capability or involves extreme sustained towing, examine the diesel boundary rather than assuming a gas V8 is sufficient.
- Choose the engine within that class. For an F-150, consider the 5.0L when its actual rating covers the job. In a gas Super Duty, decide whether the 6.8L’s lower output meets the brief or whether the 7.3L’s higher output and available gooseneck maximum are relevant.
- For a build, check legality and integration first. Confirm the intended engine’s use restrictions, local compliance requirements, packaging, controls, cooling, fuel, transmission, and supporting hardware before treating a product listing as a complete plan.
When two options appear to fit, compare the actual load margin and vehicle configuration rather than choosing by displacement, horsepower, or the largest advertised maximum. The safest choice is the one whose full set of ratings covers the job as equipped.

How we picked
The choices here follow the assignment distinctions in Ford’s cited model pages, 2026 Super Duty towing and technical information, and Ford Performance product and announcement materials: half-ton daily use and moderate towing, heavy-duty gas work, and crate-engine project builds. The comparison uses published figures only where Ford identifies them, preserves their model-year and configuration qualifications, and treats announced crate-engine targets separately from confirmed product availability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I tow a fifth-wheel trailer with an F-150 5.0L?
The cited Ford 5.0L F-150 figures do not establish that every F-150 configuration is approved for every fifth-wheel setup. Check the exact truck’s ratings and the trailer’s pin-weight demands, then confirm that the truck’s hitch and equipment are suitable for that connection.
Does the 7.3L crate engine make my project vehicle a Super Duty for towing purposes?
No. A crate engine is a component, not factory truck certification. A modified vehicle’s capacity depends on its complete design and rated components, and the 7.3L M-6007-73B page includes an off-highway or competition-use warning.
Can I order Ford Performance’s announced 800-hp Coyote crate engine now?
The 2025 announcement described a fourth-quarter 2025 intended order window, but that announcement alone does not establish current inventory or orderability. Confirm the product’s present status with an official current Ford Performance or dealer listing before making a build plan.
