Neither a delivery app nor ordering directly is always cheaper or more reliable. For a fair comparison, use the same restaurant, items, customizations, delivery address, and approximate order time, then compare the final checkout totals and the order-specific delivery details. This guide focuses on the U.S.; prices, fees, menus, promotions, and delivery arrangements vary by restaurant and location.
Is ordering directly from a restaurant cheaper than DoorDash or Uber Eats?
Sometimes, but the ordering channel alone does not determine the price. A restaurant may set different menu prices on an app than on its own channel, while delivery fees, service fees, tips, taxes, promotions, and membership benefits can also change the total. A lower headline delivery fee does not guarantee a lower bill.

Compare the same basket in both channels and use the amount shown at checkout. Include required charges and taxes, and compare optional tip separately so you can see what is required versus discretionary. If a promotion or membership discount applies, check its eligibility and any minimum subtotal.
Make an apples-to-apples comparison
- Choose the same restaurant and enter the same delivery address in each channel.
- Add the same items, quantities, and customizations, and compare at roughly the same time.
- Review menu prices and item availability; do not assume the restaurant’s own menu and app menu match.
- At checkout, compare item prices, delivery and service fees, taxes, any small-order or other added charges, eligible promotions, and optional tip.
- Check the delivery estimate, fulfillment method, and cancellation or substitution information for each order.

What fees do delivery apps charge?
For U.S. customers, DoorDash lists delivery and service fees, with possible additional charges such as long-distance, regulatory-response, small-order, or high-demand fees. Its Help Center says fees vary by restaurant, membership, and local rules. In a revised U.S. fee structure it says is rolling out in much of the country beginning in late July 2026, the delivery fee is fixed per order but varies by merchant, while the service fee varies and is shown before checkout. Market exceptions and changing rollouts mean the fee displayed for your order is the useful figure, not a universal rate. DoorDash’s current fee page describes the categories.
Memberships and promotions can change the comparison. DoorDash’s Help Center describes DashPass benefits that may include $0 delivery and reduced service fees on eligible orders at participating restaurants in some regions. The page lists a $9.99 monthly subscription price and a $12 qualifying subtotal for those eligible offers; check the current local price, terms, and order eligibility rather than assuming the benefit applies everywhere. A membership is worthwhile only if the savings on orders you actually place outweigh its cost.

Why can app menu prices differ from restaurant prices?
Restaurants set their delivery menu prices, and DoorDash says merchants are not required to match in-store prices on delivery orders. That means prices can vary by channel, but it does not mean every restaurant marks up every item. Compare the exact items in both menus before checkout. DoorDash’s menu-pricing explanation addresses how merchants set prices.
Customer-facing platform fees should not be confused with what a restaurant pays the platform. DoorDash lists merchant marketplace commission tiers of 15%, 25%, and 30% for its Basic, Plus, and Premier plans for Dasher-delivered orders; it describes Online Ordering as commission-free but subject to payment processing, and lists a 6% pickup rate under stated conditions. Uber’s U.S. merchant terms list marketplace fees of 20%, 25%, or 30% by package and conditions, plus a 15% fee for merchant-managed delivery. The Federal Trade Commission has identified menu-price differences, fee disclosure, variable charges, promotional restrictions, and total price as issues in its proposed rulemaking on online food and grocery delivery. Its April 2026 materials describe a proposal, not a final nationwide rule. Which option offers more choice?
A marketplace app can make it convenient to browse participating restaurants in one place, but it only shows participating merchants, their listed menus, and items currently available through that channel. Ordering directly can expose a restaurant’s own menu and ordering terms. There is no established broad comparison showing that one channel always has more restaurants, a fuller menu, or greater item availability across U.S. locations. Check the restaurant and items available at your address in both channels.

Is it more reliable to order from the restaurant?
There is no sound basis here for a general reliability winner. Reliability depends on the particular restaurant, order, delivery arrangement, and timing. A direct order may be delivered by restaurant staff, a third-party courier, or not delivered at all if the restaurant offers pickup only; the channel name does not tell you who fulfills the order or what support applies.
Platform terms explain operational expectations and limitations, but they are not independent comparisons of delivery punctuality, order accuracy, or customer satisfaction. Uber describes merchant order reliability in terms of a store’s ability to accept and complete orders in a timely manner. DoorDash’s online-ordering terms caution that errors can occur and do not guarantee service reliability or menu-item availability. How to choose for your next order
- Choose by total cost: Compare the checkout total for the same basket, including applicable discounts and membership terms.
- Choose by menu: Check the exact items and customizations available in the restaurant’s channel and the app.
- Choose by delivery arrangement: Confirm whether delivery is handled by restaurant staff or a courier, and what the order page says about timing and support.
- Choose by occasion: A marketplace may be convenient when browsing multiple participating restaurants; direct ordering may better suit a restaurant-specific menu or ordering channel. Verify the actual options for your location.
